Susan Sarandon Endorses Table Tennis (So The December

2011/January 2012 edition of AARP TheMagazine, carried an article about the grow-ing popularity of table tennis (“ping pong”to non-affectionados!). Written by JeffreyRessner, “Susan Sarandon Paddle Pusher,”touts the many advantages of involvementin this fun game that can be played by peopleof varying physical capabilities. Thefollowing is reprinted from the magazine.

Despite her much-loved performance in thefilm Bull Durham, Susan Sarandon isn’t justa baseball fan. Sarandon, now 65, recentlypartnered in a growing international chainof hip table tennis clubs called SPiN, includ-ing one she helped launch in New YorkCity. And while developing a documentary-style show about the resurgence of Ping-Pong, and playing in a televised match - inChina - she’s working to get the sport intoU.S. schools.

Q. What’s the appeal of ping-pong? It tran-scends age, gender, and physical ability. Wehave very serious players who are 16, thehedge fund guys come in at 5 o’clock, andthroughout the day women in their 60s and70s stop by to play and get a little some-thing to eat.

Q. Are there health benefits? You have tobe a pretty aggressive player to break a sweat. But, the game develops hand-eye coordina-tion and is also now recommended forpeople who want to keep functioningdespite the onset of Alzheimer’s.

Q. What’s the biggest misunderstandingabout Ping-Pong? It has a reputation forbeing geeky and uncool. And few realizethat it’s an Olympic sport.

The author is launching the Camellia Net-work to support youth making the transition from foster care to independence.
