Dear Parents and Community Members,

It is hard to believe that we have nearly reached the end of Term 1. It is important to remember that our school is always busy as is life in general. O en when we are asked “How are things?” we answer with the reply “busy”. For us at South, our school is always a busy and produc ve place focused on student learning. Like everyone, it is easy to fill the days with jobs, tasks and ac vi es but if we are not focussed on the important things that occur daily in our classrooms, it does not translate into be er learning outcomes and opportuni es for our students. A er all this is what we are here for and why teachers become teachers.

It is now me to share with our school community one of the challenges I set with my hard working Execu ve Team at the start of the year. It was simple; let’s, as a team, focus on claiming back and reducing the interrup ons to learning prior to 1pm. I am pleased to report the improvements in available learning me has been well received by students and teachers and having an impact. We will be focussing on this again in Term 2. To support our teachers and students in achieving greater results with this challenge, I now ask for help from every parents and career to ensure your child/ren arrive to school prior to 9am.

Another success from Term 1 that I am truly pleased to share with parents, is that no class has been split when teachers have been away. In rela on to this, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Walsh for coordina ng and organising all replacement teachers and also extend a massive thank you to my execu ve team, part me teachers and casuals who have taken on numerous addi onal classes. This has ensured con nuity for every student at South with their learning and ensured our school remains focussed on our core business: students’ learning.

On a personal note, I love teaching and suppor ng teachers to teach and students to learn. This week I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to spend

me teaching in 3M & 3G during gardening lessons and 4L during English. I also have had the privilege to complete teacher observa ons as part of regular supervision in our school in KT, 1D, 1H, 3M, 4L, 5L and 6T this week and am pleased to report, our teachers and students are amazing and focused on our kids. Please remember Teacher Apprecia on Week is Week 2 of term 2 (5th to 11th May).

New Permanent Teaching Appointments

Earlier this week, I was advised with some pleasant news by our school’s staffing team that they had filled another two of our permanent teacher vacancies. Please join me in congratula ng Miss Samantha Holdom, our 4H teacher and welcoming Miss Meg Foster.

Finally, as this will be our last newsle er for Term 1, I would like to publicly thank everyone for their ongoing posi ve support of our school. Looking forward to a great last week of Term 1. I hope stu‐dents enjoy the well‐earned rest over the holidays and look forward to you joining us on the 25th of April in Summer School uniform for the ANZAC day March. Please watch our Skoolbag App and Facebook page for reminders.

Kindest Regards,

Pete Baum (Aka Mr B)

Last Friday the school Tennis team took on Narrabri West Public School in Round 3 of the state wide PSSA knockout compe on. A er having several byes and a forfeit,

this was to be our first match as a team.

At the start of the day, it looked like it would be a close tussle. Mason Louis and Josh Casey both won their singles convincingly 6—0. The girls’ singles were a similar score line with Amarni Louis

only dropping one game and Ally Harris winning to love.

The straight doubles were a tougher struggle than the score suggests. Mason and Josh winning

6 games to 0 and Amarni and Ally also 6 to 0.

Josh and Ally stepped up to be our No. 1 mixed pair and did a great job of combining as a team,

winning 6 to 0. Jai read McInnes and Ka e Eveleigh then stepped ,onto the court, finishing off

the match in style, 6 games to 2. Final score, South winning 8 sets to 0.

A special thanks to the parents, grandparents and carers who travelled to Narrabri for their

support of our team.

On Wednesday 4th April, 24 students from Gunnedah South and Mullaley a ended the North West Hockey Trials in Tamworth. All students had a great day, playing 3 x 20minute games against students from Tamworth,

Armidale and Inverell. It was great to see an improvement in everyone’s skill throughout the day and the North West coach was so surprised that barely any of our students had played before. Miss Laurie and Miss Willcocks were

very proud as coaches.

A big congratula ons goes to Hayden Sawyer who was selected in the Possibles and Probables game. Unfortunately, Hayden was unlucky not to be

selected this year, but is looking forward to trialling again next year.
