Student News Epsom Rotary Young Chef Cookery Competition

On 27 November 2017 Rosebery students took part in the Epsom Rotary Young Chef first round heats where the brief was to prepare, in two hours, a three course healthy meal, comprising of a starter, main course and dessert for two people, costing less than £15.

The student chefs had to plan their menus, show costings and complete a detailed time plan. It was a very successful cook-off and the students, Amelia Broomer 9PX, Amalie Osborne 9EY, Lucy Sedgwick 9PX, Jo-Anne Winmill 9CX and Lauren Williams 9MX, are all to be congratulated on their hard work, creative dishes and excellent presentation. Each produced their menu in an intense two hour cook-off while Sean Mooney, from the Canopy Restaurant in Epsom High Street, and representatives from the Epsom Rotary Club, watched on and judged! Lucy and Amalie are through to the next round and Lucy Sedgwick was presented with the Cup, which once engraved, will be on display in the Reception Foyer cabinet. All five students who took part, received Rotary Certificates and Lakeland aprons (event sponsors). They now move forward to the District Heat on 27 January at Merton Campus South Thames College and, if successful, to the Regional final, then potentially on to the National Final in April 2018! It was a great evening to be part of and the lovely aromas produced were mouth-watering! All the chefs worked very hard during the event, this enabled our students to gain confidence in preparation for their GCSE 3 hour practical in Year 11. Lucy’s Menu

Starter: Creamy Mushroom Soup Main: Spiced Pork Chop with garlic mash and roasted root vegetables

Dessert: Gooey Chocolate Pear Pudding

Amalie’s Menu

Starter: Scallops with pea and mint purée Main: Homemade open pasta ravioli with pancetta, butternut squash and feta

Dessert: Banana pancakes with berries and yogurt

Student Co-Planners: Using students to help inform our teaching and make our lessons even better!

On Tuesday 21 November a group of students from Years 7-11 worked with Mrs Rundle and Mrs Ford to become

co-planners. Excellent teaching and learning is something we are incredibly proud of at Rosebery, and we are so lucky

to have such dedicated staff who devoted such care to their planning. We do also see the value of listening to our

students and talking with them to really examine what works in our classrooms. The co-planning training involved

several aspects, so that these students can be used throughout the year to work with teachers to further develop their

lessons and the students’ experiences.

The first part of the session was spent considering what makes a great lesson, both from a student and a teacher’s

point of view, and this linked closely with the principles of our Teaching and Learning Charter. The second part of the

training involved looking at students giving feedback to teachers about their lessons and how to do this in a way that

was both positive and constructive. Students worked on re-framing some negative scenarios and writing coaching

questions that could be used with staff to tweak their lessons and make them even better for our learners. Finally,

students worked with two groups of teachers: the first involved discussing what teachers would want to get out of

co-planning lessons with students, the second involved the students actually practising co-planning with a group of

our new teachers. Each teacher brought along a lesson plan, or resource, which they then discussed with the newly

trained co-planners, in pairs, and considered ways to make these lessons even better for the students.

Both staff and students got an awful lot out of working together, with students commenting that it made them

appreciate how much time and thought goes in to planning lessons and the key elements that need to be considered.

Staff also very much enjoyed the opportunity and valued hearing from the students to discuss the ways that they like

to learn best, and how these strategies can be embedded in their lessons.

Finally, a huge thank you goes to all of those staff and students involved:

Start is an interactive online resource offering information, advice and guidance which inspires young people to look at the world of work.

Start is connected to the live labour market and it allows users to create and build up their own personal profile. Students can explore jobs and think about their own skills, qualities and interests and work preferences. There is a study section which looks at learning and the different training routes available, along with an interactive map showing where you can study, including live apprenticeship opportunities. They have just recently introduced a new section for employability. Start has been carefully developed to ensure that new measures are met from the Department for Education’s Statutory Guidance for schools, Ofsted inspection criteria and Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Careers Guidance. All of Year 11 have now had an opportunity to explore the Start programme in PSHE. If you would like the opportunity to support your child with future options you can register here at: www.startprofile.com. (They may ask for a code which is 64675).

Can you offer a Rosebery student a work placement within your company? With many employers now looking for experience, as well as academic achievements, work placements have an increasing importance for students progressing into their chosen career. Work experience gives students the opportunity to learn about the world of work, gain employability skills, increase confidence and make them stand out on their personal statement and CV.

Our Year 12 students are available for work experience from 11 to 15 June 2018. If you feel that you can offer work experience to our students and put their curriculum learning into practice, I would love to hear from you. Please email me on [email protected]

PSA Second Hand Clothing & Toy Recycling:

TUESDAY 5 DECEMBER 2017

Thank you so much to everyone who brought in a bag of recycling for us in October, an easy way

for the PSA to raise funds for the school. For every 1kg of donations, we are given 40p. As

a guideline, a typical outfit for a girl is shoes, trousers/skirt, jumper and/or T-shirt all packed into

a bag and this would raise about £1. If all 1440 students were able to bring in an outfit that doesn't fit them anymore,

we could raise an amazing amount of money! There are always clothing recycling bins positioned by the back gates

to the school, or students can hand in donations at any time to Reception labelled for the attention of the PSA. Our

official monthly collection is every first TUESDAY of the month when the recycling bins will be positioned by the front

and back gates to receive donations on this day. Please do encourage your household to provide at least one bag of

recyclable items. There is a poster attached to this newsletter outlining exactly which items are acceptable.

Thank you so much in advance for your support. All funds raised go towards providing additional resources for our

students.
