Earth Day Poster Contest

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. This April, to promote more active involvement in our district for this important day, Science Squad and Art Club collaborated to hold an Earth Day Poster Contest that was school wide! The contest was open to all students, grades 7 – 12 and they were encouraged to explore specific topics outlined on a flyer.

Given as awards were Amazon Gift Cards funded by the Science Squad as well as Earth Day T-Shirts created by Art Club Members. All participants work was put on display and a school wide student/faculty vote took place to choose three finalists. After a lot of hard work, the Science Squad members tallied all the votes, and our winners were chosen!

Coming in 3rd place was Steven McChesney who focused on Recycling as a theme for his poster. In 2nd place, with a piece that addressed Deforestation, was Taegan Smith. Coming in 1st place was Kristen Anderson with a beautifully drawn and painted poster promoting awareness of endangered animals. Both the Science Squad and Art Club look forward to making this an annual Contest for our student body to continue to participate in. They are appreciative for all the efforts of the students who participated as well as the students and faculty that voted.

Congressional Art Competition

This spring a Congressional Art Competition was held. Congressman Tom Reed sent out a letter to local schools notifying young artists that he would be looking for one piece of art work to represent each district to be judged by a panel. Five pieces from all the work submitted would be chosen as Finalists. I am proud to announce that from the group of finalists the student chosen to represent out school was a finalist!

Taegan Smith will have her work displayed in Congressman Tom Reed’s office in Washington D. C. for one year. Her piece, titled, “Weapon of Choice” is a realistic drawing of herself, holding out both of her hands, palms facing out, which have two symbols on them, “peace” and “love”. Her hard work, outstanding artistic abilities and powerful message was clearly recognized with this piece. It is a huge honor to have been chosen as a finalist for this competition and she has proven to be an outstanding student and individual to represent FCS.

Mock Trial Team--some information provided by The Post Journal

The Frewsburg Central School district is home to a championship-caliber mock trial team. On Monday, May 20th and Tuesday, May 21st, the mock trial team competed as one of six regional champions at the High School Mock Trial State Finals in Albany. The team placed fifth in the state competition, in which approximately 300 schools throughout the state participate annually. In order to make it to the state level, the Frewsburg team had to beat opposition at both county and regional competitions, a feat it was able to successfully achieve. The regional competition, held in Batavia, also included teams from Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Traditionally, the regional champions have been almost exclusively Buffalo- or Rochester-based school districts. According to Tom Nelson, the team’s faculty adviser, Frewsburg’s victory at the regional competition was a landmark achievement. “This was the first time in 32 years that a team from outside of Erie or Monroe counties advanced to the championships,” he said. The team consisted of eight Frewsburg students-six seniors, as well as Jacob Ernewein, a junior, and Anthony Mole, a freshman. The seniors included: Tera Anderson, Sarah Moller, Samantha Mann, Alanna Blanchard, Morgan Knight and Jacob Caldwell. In addition to Nelson, the team was also advised by Sherry Bjork, a Frewsburg-based attorney. “I’ve had some very good teams, but this team (has) accomplished more than any other team I’ve had,” said Nelson, who has served as the team’s faculty adviser since 1989. “For us to finish fifth is pretty good. I was pleased and I think the kids were awesome. They just did a tremendous job all year, and I think we definitely represented our end of the state well. It was an awesome experience, and it was great to be in Albany.” Nelson said he wanted to thank the volunteer efforts of Bjork, who dedicates much energy and time into assisting the team with their cases, as well as the assistance of several other county lawyers. “Any time we have a trial at the county level, there are (local) lawyers that hear the cases and serve as judges. After each case, they help us along and give us advice, so I’d like to thank all of those attorneys. Surrogate Court Judge Stephen Cass has been a big help to the team, and we appreciate his assistance over the years,” he said. The goal of the mock trial program is to further the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for students to become civically engaged in a democratic society. Student involvement in the program increases their awareness of the importance of law in a democratic society, and strengthens their understanding of the fundamental rights awarded by the U.S. Constitution.

Cutting Edge NAO Robot Visits E2CCB Classrooms

A representative from Teq, a leading technology integration and professional development company in education, recently paid a very special visit to the Information Technology/Computer Systems Program at the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Hewes Educational Center in Ashville and the Computer Industry Professional Certifications Program at the Lake Shore/Carrier Career & Technical Academy in Angola.

Mark George, a Teq representative, brought with him a NAO robot (pronounced “now”), a fully programmable humanoid robot approximately two feet tall and just over 10 pounds. It is easy to use, easy to understand, and fun to watch. In education, it is used to motivate students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and to help students understand essential concepts related to those curricula.

According to Teq, robots allow students to connect theory with practice and explore a wide range of robotics-related fields. Students also gain hands-on experience in a variety of areas important in robotics such as locomotion, grasping, audio and video signal processing, voice recognition, and more.

E2CCB students were especially interested in the programming languages used by the NAO robot, including C++, Python, .NET, Java, and Matlab, as well as the Embedded GNU/Linux operating systems. Under the direction of Instructor Michael Dietzen at the Hewes Center and Gregory Cole at the Lake Shore/Carrier Career & Technical Academy, E2CCB students in both programs are currently utilizing Java with the MIT App Inventor to create Android apps.

During Mr. George’s visit, students learned about the technology and programming behind the NAO robot. They also had the opportunity to watch him dance to Thriller and Gangnam Style, as well as tell the story of Star Wars, complete with sweeping gestures and sound effects. Students were very intrigued with his abilities and excited to learn about the technology behind the device.

The NAO robot features cameras that enable face recognition and detection and image processing as well as microphones that enable speech recognition and sound localization capabilities. The NAO robot can walk with pressure sensors built into its feet and it can be choreographed, as well as grasp and manipulate objects. It can also get up if it falls.

Teq, with headquarters in Huntington Station, NY, serves school districts throughout New York State. Its mission is to empower students by offering professional development opportunities for teachers and helping schools utilize the latest technological advancements in their classrooms.

The IT/CS and Computer Industry Professional Certifications Programs are two-year Career & Technical Education Programs that prepare students for a wide variety of careers in the information technology sector. CTE programs are two-year programs for high school juniors and seniors. CTE students spend approximately half their school day at an E2CCB campus studying a specialized field of their choosing, gaining real-life experience, valuable certifications and licenses, and work experience all while earning their Regents Diploma.

Frewsburg Central School was represented by Christian Abbey and Chelsey Bentley during this visit.

Good As GooldTeacher, Coach, AD Retiring After ‘Special’ Career At Frewsburg

At a recent event celebrating Frewsburg’s first-ever New York State Public High School Athletic Association softball title, Tom Mott had some kind words for retiring athletic director Bob Goold.

Mott, who is currently an assistant coach on the Bears softball squad, has known Goold for quite some time, and, during Goold’s first year as AD with Frewsburg, was part of the football team, along with future NFL All-Pro Shane Conlan and others, to play for the first time in school history at Ralph Wilson (then Rich) Stadium.

“(Tom) handed me the plaque and he said, ‘You came in as a champion, and now you leave as a champion,’” Goold said. “Of course, I had to remind him that (his football team) was beaten by Albion 49-14 on that day (at Ralph Wilson Stadium).”

Minor historical discrepancies aside, Mott’s overriding sentiment is certainly right on the mark. Goold is a champion - not only

in the hearts of the countless high school athletes with whom he’s come in contact over his 35-year coaching and teaching career, but also with the thousands of special athletes he’s coached, mentored and been a friend during his work as area coordinator of the Chautauqua Lakers Special Olympics program.

Goold, to put simply, is a sports fanatic. From playing rugby in college - he graduated from SUNY Brockport in 1978 - to coaching tennis, football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and anything in between, Goold has coached pretty much every sport imaginable.

And it was that love of sport, and the desire to share it with others, that led him on the path to working, and eventually leading, the Chautauqua Lakers, which has become one of his most lasting and important contributions to the area.

“I’d been fortunate enough to play a lot of sports in high school,” Goold said, “but I saw all those kids who didn’t have that chance, and I thought it would be neat to help them.

“So (when the Lakers, formed in the late 1960s) held the Special Olympics at College Stadium when I was a senior in high school, I went down and helped out.”

A passion was born.“It’s something near and dear to my heart,” he said.In addition to countless state and national competitions, he’s been to four World Special Olympic Games, including the

inaugural event that was held, fortuitously enough, while he was attending Brockport, as a national coach and was for many years the area coordinator of the Chautauqua Lakers.

At the program’s height in the late 1990s, there were some 1,200 participants training year round in 13 different sports. Thanks to the program, he’s traveled around the world, had lunch with Muhammad Ali - in Ireland while coaching a

young woman in powerlifting- and was even named the national coach of the year in 1990.What he’ll remember most of all, though, is the way in which the program has brought together high school and Special

Olympic athletes. “That’s been most special to me, bringing them all together,” he said. “We have hundreds of high school kids that do

volunteer work, and it’s wonderful to see them interact with these special athletes.“That’s been my favorite part.” That, and seeing the Special Olympians get their well-deserved chance at athletic competition.“Just to see them, it’s great,” he said of a recent event held at Strider Field that saw some 800 competitors take part. “It’s

their time to shine, because not all can play little league or youth soccer. The stands are full, they get a chance to compete and feel the joy of finishing an event and receiving a ribbon.

“Their smiles stay with you.”With a shiny new state championship plaque in the trophy case and a pair of Frewsburg track and field athletes coming

off a state meet appearances, Goold will now hand the reins of the athletic program over to football coach Terry Gray. Now, he’s left with nothing but fond memories.“Frewsburg is a great school,” he said, “academically and athletically. I’ve always said, if they gave the Sears Cup

(awarded to colleges with the best athletic programs) for high schools, Frewsburg would get it.“It’s been great.” --Story represented by The Post Journal

State Champions!Behind the masterful pitching of Sam Mott, timely - very timely, actually - hitting up and down

the order and a defense that protected the lead like a grizzly watching over its cub, the Bears captured a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C softball title in dramatic fashion on Saturday when it edged Section 3’s Sandy Creek, 2-1, at the Adirondack Sports Complex.

The softball title was the first in school history, and the first in the nearly two-decade tenure of head coach Jon Blanchard.Oh, and by the way, it was also the 299th career victory for the longtime Frewsburg coach, but here’s guessing that that

milestone will pale in comparison to this one.“Wow, can you believe it?” he marveled. “We ran out (onto the field after the win) and I thought, ‘I can’t believe we

just won it.’“I’m as happy as I can be.”So, too, was the rest of his squad.“I’ve wanted this forever,” a smiling Shawna Raymond said. “It’s so exciting, and words can’t explain how proud I am

of our team. We’ve been here before, and (after each loss) we said, ‘Next year we’re not going to lose!’“And this year we finally owned up to that. I’m just so excited that in our last year we ended it this way.”Broadly speaking, it certainly was a perfect way to cap the high school careers of the eight seniors (Reyanne Strong,

Raymond, Bethany Steele, McKenzie Cass, Alanna Blanchard, Mott, Annie Berg and Bobbi Jo Whippo) on the Frewsburg roster; more narrowly, however, the game itself had a pretty phenomenal finish, too.
