RSU embark on a year of new initiativesThis year sees a lot of change around RSU as
we work hard on continuously improving the student experience at the University of Roehampton.
‘On Your Bike’, ‘Fresh Air’ and ‘RU Inspired’ are the main contributors to the new look RSU! After taking on two new interns over the summer break, a Volunteering Intern and a New Media Intern, we have been able to focus greatly on specific areas that have struggled to launch in previous years. So far the new arms of the RSU body have been a great success, the radio station launched on the very first night of the academic year, the ‘On Your Bike’ scheme was set in motion on Monday 3rd October and RU Inspired projects are lined up for the weeks and months fast approaching us. We are determined to improve the student experience for those who attend the University of Roehampton and we feel that the
new services we provide keep us up to date with what students expect form their Student Union. By re-investing the money raised through events we run, this year we have been able to greatly broaden what we can offer as a Student Union.
You can read about each of the new services in this edition of Fresh Newspaper, but alternatively you can drop in and see us in Lawrence Building (opposite the Union bar) or contact your sabbatical team online at www.roehamptonstudent.com or via their email accounts that are listed in the ‘Blogs’ pages.

Bout ye Roehampton?
Another year for some, a start for others & the last for myself & Sam. Where did the time go? Standing in my Luminous yellow t-shirt waiting for Freshers on Sunday 18th I came over all nostalgic. My time here at Roehampton has been filled with epic people, events and banter constantly & if you’re a fresher reading this I have one piece of advice: Try everything. Freshers week was yet another RSU success with Wagner jiggling his stuff on the Saturday for all to see. I on the other hand spent the week in & out of A&E, not drinking whilst on anti-biotics & finally putting myself to bed early so Wagner’s performance is an unseen mystery for me I’m afraid. Epic fail much? Coming up for you this year is a new RSU team full of mad ejits and lovely ladies, we have an all new line up and although they wouldn’t make Britain’s Next Top Model they know their stuff. So get involved and keep your eyes & ears open to all the new and exciting projects and events coming up this year.
All the best for the coming year, make the most of it third years, work harder second years & Freshers - just have an epic time & soak up all that our wonderful Roey has to offer.Beccax
Hello,
I welcome all the Fresher’s to Roehampton, and welcome back everyone else. I am Sam, one half of your Student Media Officer duo and you’ll find me at the bar.
By now you should have settled in and met your ‘new best friends’, and although lectures have now started, I wouldn’t let that put a dampener on things and I fully suggest that you still go out all of the time and do awesome things.
We are looking to set up a society of committed writers who can meet up altogether in the newsroom at uni to get articles done for Fresh but also to help each other out and to learn the software that is important to know. If you are interested just contact me at [email protected],
Have fun,Samx

amount of people queuing up and passing through the RSU tent to check out what’s on offer at Roehampton – one student told me they were in the queue for nearly 2hours! I hope you (especially that student) found it useful and worthwhile, especially when Domino’s had the pizza out! Fresher’s week seems like it came, saw and conquered ages ago, but fear not there’s still loads happening throughout this term. Campaigns are kicking off with Black History fortnight, Trips away are being booked (definitely check out the Ski trip – always a big shout!) and student projects are underway. The radio station has launched and making good headway – I know we’ve got a few future radio stars out there so come get involved.
On the Academic side, we’re looking for students who are interested in becoming Programme Reps and Committee members. This is really good opportunity for you to make changes to the way your course and University is run and managed, and will also sit like diamond on your CV. If you’re interested or want more information give me a shout – [email protected]!
Don’t forget to check out our website & Facebook to keep up-to-date with what’s going on and if you have some free time, come up and see us in the RSU! Work hard play harder!

HelloHello – what a crazy couple of weeks! Welcome again, if you haven’t already got bored of hearing it, and I hope your all settled in to the swing of things round Roehampton. This year’s Fresher’s week was definitely one of the best I’ve seen, you Fresher’s look like you’re made from the right stuff! Fresher’s Fair had an amazing
Hi Folks!
Hopefully now your livers have settled and your brains are back in working order after an intense but successful Fresher’s week! Thank you to everyone who moved a box, handed in a headphone, drank the carling, bought a ticket, pack a table away, got involved or just had fun. We couldn’t have done it without you!Fresher’s fair was one of the best recorded in Roehampton history. With approximately 2200 students pass through the big top, it was a fantastic
way for the fresher’s to really experience what Roehampton has to offer. It was especially a good day for the societies as we had a record number of sign ups as each society continues to improve with even 3-4 new societies on scene! Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
Now we’re in full first term swing! As the lectures take over your lives and deadlines start to linger, don’t forget that the RSU continues to keep your social calendar sweet and pump it full of fun, exciting activities that keep your social taste buds at a large.
As you may or may not know, ‘On Your Bike’ is a new scheme the RSU have in-troduced to Roehampton to give you, the students the opportunity to step out (or ride outside) the Roehampton gates and enjoy a relaxing ride around one of the most prestigious parks in London, Richmond park, or a river ride along the Themes. Rent a bike for free at the RSU reception and it’s your for a day. Get involved whilst the days are still light!
Day trips and theatre trips are looking to kick off within the next month. Now Roehampton is in full swing keep a close watch as to what’s on offer and book up early to avoid disappointment! Check the RSU website or RSU reception for full details.
The University quiz kicked off last Sunday in the Union with a good turnout. It’s good to see two colleges combining brain cells with a Froebel and Digby host! Keep supporting the weekly quiz every Sunday with your chance to win cash prizes and generally have a tremendous amount of fun.
As always, our doors are always open. Come up, have a chat, grab a coffee or just provide us with a friendly smile and hug. Enjoy your first term and I look forward to seeing you around.
Hugs and high fives
Hey,
By now I’m sure you’ve all settled into the pace of student life! Slowly getting accustomed to those Thursday morning
hangovers after Fez whilst attending a 9am lecture, watching all the programmes possible on iplayer/4od, and developing a napping sequence to fit around your lectures.
Whilst it’s great being able to structure you’re days as you wish, it’s important not to forget the simple things that keep you healthy & well. For some of you, registering with the on campus medical centre probably isn’t a top priority, but with a vicious bout of the notorious Freshers Flu going around, it’s probably wise to...even if it’s just to save yourself the hassle of having to do it if you actually become poorly! The Student Medical Centre is located near Old Court on the Froebel Campus. Also, if you can’t remember the last time you had a check up at the dentist, or an eye test, maybe it’s time you looked into the local services available. If you’re worried about costs, you can claim back money spent on health checks by filling out a NHS HE1 Form which is available from local pharmacies on Danebury Avenue.
These past few weeks, it is likely that your focus has been on making friends and settling into uni...Now, why not try and invest some time into looking after yourself? Get a decent asda shop in, go for a brisk walk around Richmond Park, have a look at what classes our RoeActive gym has to offer...Doing all of these little things will only benefit you, and offer some peace of mind.
Also, this month we have Fat Talk Free Week (18th-22nd October) which is all about enhancing your self-esteem & enjoying you body! For more information about getting involved, email me or have a look at our website!
Lastly, if you’ve got any concerns or worries about anything...give me a bell and I’ll be happy to help!
Love & Hugs
Hey Hey,
Well where to start?! What a hectic few weeks we have all had, but, I can honestly say that in the three years I have already had here at Roehampton, it was the most successful start to a new year yet. A great effort put in by the
of the right groups/profiles for RSU information!
As you may or may not have noticed (I hope you did!) we launched ‘Fre-shAir’ on the Sunday that Freshers moved in, since then it has been going from strength to strength. You can read more about it on Page 9 so I won’t ramble too much now, but all I can say is get involved! You can listen online at roehamptonstudent.com all day every day.
Another part of the ‘Fresh’ media brand is of course ‘Fresh’ newspaper, it is in fact the bad boy you are read-ing right now! We held a meeting last week for anyone who is interested in writing for the paper and had a great turn out. It looks like we will have an extremely diverse and well-rounded writership for this year - but it’s not too late to get on board! Just drop me an email at [email protected] and we’ll set the ball rolling!
We’ve also been busy redesigning the SU website which I hope has been the most noticeable improvement (second and third years), it’s now almost fully redesigned, just a few little tweaks still to do but we hope its serving you all well!
We hope that you’re all having a great time this year, our events have been busier than ever before which is always a good sign that we’re getting something right, keep your eyes open at events for our photographers who will be doing their best to get the good, the bad and the ugly on camera for us all to enjoy!
Keep doing what you’re doing Roe-hamptonians and remember we’re always here 9-5 in Lawrence Building to answer any of those questions you’re dying to ask!
Party, Play and Prosper (and of course study)

entire RSU team and of course the 150+ flat reps that made move-in day run so smoothly!
There has been some fantastic feedback from Fresher’s as well so we would like to think everyone is now fully settled and reminiscing over what a great time Fresher’s Week was.
Now i’m sure the Uni buzz is dying a little as lectures have started and the early mornings will be getting the better of most people, but I guess it’s the degree you’re all here for so stay dedicated folks! Once you have finished napping in the day the next thing I’m sure you all do is check out Facebook to see what hideous pictures you have been tagged in from the night before. So whilst you’re on Facey B make sure you check out the Roehampton SU profile and the RSU Official Group - this will be the place to find out all the latest info on what’s happening from day to day. We send out one Event each week that includes entry info for your nights out, themes and anything else we need to tell you. There have been a few promotion groups popping up so make sure you are part

Freshers week is sadly now a distant memory but I hope you all had an awesome week – I know I did – and although the Freshers Week madness may be over its spirit still lives on throughout the year so I look forward to seeing you all out and about! My beloved Froebel College, we have had a mighty couple of weeks behind us but that is not what I am here to tell you about. Instead I want to talk about how much I love each and every one of your adorable little faces (many of which I hope to meet, party, late night study and celebrate with over the com-ing months) and also about the events we
WHITELANDERS!! Loving the great start to the year, with a successful moving in day/night and an awesome Fresher’s Week, hope you all enjoyed it!! Unfortunate-ly it’s that awful time when lectures have started and we realise we are actually here to learn. But this won’t get in the way of you still enjoying yourself. Hopefully most of you have got your loans by now but before you let the money go to your head and blow it all on Westfields and Nandos, remember to save some for: recommended course books, student essentials or possibly even a Sport Roehampton Membership if
Hello! Hope you all had an amazing Freshers Week and are now settled in to University life. It has been great to see so many faces on the quad enjoying the sun during these last two weeks as people are getting to know each other. Freshers Week got off to a great start this year on Southlands with it all kicking off with our new residents arriving at a steady pace throughout the day meaning it all ran smoothly. After a brief talk we held our welcoming party at Southlands social space, where we had free food from the Southlands Piri Piri cafe and wine for anyone who wanted. As well as this we had the bar open accompanied with music which was a huge success and a brilliant start for the
Hi just as an introduction, I’m Rachael the mount clare site rep and am so excited to be working as part of the RSU this year!
I’m going to make mount clare the social hub it deserves to be and really put it on the map as somewhere people will want to live in future years!
Already got loads of ideas for the upcoming months to really get mount clare involved more within the Uni, so expect to see more of us all soon!! If you have any questions about the m.c. Empire come and find me!! Xx

university, I know coming to university can be an overwhelming experience but fingers crossed you’ve all settled in well and are getting into the ‘blue-and-yellow’ swing of the mighty Digby.
It’s been a very busy start of term for me and I am very excited about the college’s prospects this year. The Common Room saga has been going on for sixteen months too long, and I am pleased to say that the ball is finally rolling – and I am making sure it’s rolling fast! After a promising meeting with some university top dogs Digby has been promised funding and concrete plans to rejuvenate Digby Common Room into a modern, enjoyable and entertaining social space that all students at the University can enjoy. I would like to take this early opportunity to encourage students to utilise the space when it is completed, as it will be a great place to socialise, chill and have fun with your flatmates and friends, or even somewhere to go just to get away from it all, the common room will soon be the place to go. We have other exciting plans with Digby Square, as well as many college-based events, so please come along!
College pride is something we value greatly in Digby, and it is something which the students of Digby have maybe lost sight of in recent times. To all you Freshers please do get involved in the college patriotism and banter – it is what makes Roehampton University unique to any other university in the country. And to my beloved second and third years, thank you so much for your commitment and patience this last year, times have been tough but I promise they are on the up, so now is the time to wipe away those Belfry tears for one last time and get ready to unite and excite!!
Lots of Blue & Yellow love, Your Digby College President, Beeken x
have a head of us here at Froebel College and Roehampton University in general.
If I can start with a sad point first…we have lost one of the friendliest faces on cam-pus recently and that is because Brenda’s café has been closed. Massive sad face for this. I am more than happy to hear your plans about protest, rebellion or outright anarchy about this, I suggest that we all try and find a way to fight to keep what many of us consider our university mum with her delicious food for the soul that has kept many of us alive over the past few years.
But enough sad face and on to more positive things, we have lots of RSU events to look forward to, Fez every Wednesday with free buses leaving from the Digby cam-pus, Acoustic night on Thursday being hosted by hopefully your favourite farmer! The BOP returns to its rightful time every Friday night and is always a fantastic night out. The Quiz is back in force every Sunday at the bar from 8pm with myself and a brand new host for 2011. The Froebel fresher’s welcome dinner is just around the corner and you will receive personal invitations to that shortly. We are planning to get 2 of Froebel’s more musical students to play at the bar soon as well as a poten-tial Halloween tour of London with a few friendly drinks after.
Honestly, there is too much madness for one article! The first edition of the Froebel Noble (our own college newspaper) will be out soon and will have a more detailed list of what is happening as well as words from our nutcase of a Social Sec, the sexy miss Adrienne ‘AD’ Wadsworth and Froebel Zeebras manager Nouri Ezzine.
Love you Froebel – please let me know if there is anything I can do to show you how much!
upcoming year as it gave many people the chance to mingle early doors. A massive thanks goes to everyone who was involved with the opening day; from our Head of College and the Executive Assistant to all the flat reps, it couldn’t have been done without them.
On the Monday night we at Southlands had a back to school themed Bop which seems to have become tradition over the past few years. Throughout the week it was fantastic to see so many people from Southlands out at the various events that was held whether that was the Grand, Club Foot or Freshers Ball.
We are looking forward to more events, especially Buddy Bop this Friday, where as per usual, Southlands will be attending as smurfs, which is always good fun and I hope you all get stuck in. As well as all this, we are trying to improve our social space with things such as a projector and screen, amongst others, so that more people will use it throughout the year and have pride in it. It also means we can hold various events such as film nights and games nights etc.
At this early stage, the year has gone really well, and has set a good basis for a strong and friendly community spirit. Hope it continues and that we keep seeing your beautiful faces!
you join a team. We’ve got a good line up of things to come for you people including an Ann Summers night, Whitelands College nights that will run every 2 weeks from Thursday the 28th Septem-ber and the first Shitelands Fundraiser of the year which will be a “MAN O MAN” competition...look out for the posters. These will just be extras a long side the usual Fez Wednesdays, Acoustic/Bands night Thursdays and Bop Fridays. So get those strange looking fancy dress outfits out at the ready. Buddy bop shall be seeing the return of the Whitelands Wal-lys (where’s Wally) and Halloween speaks for itself.
Remember to use the social space we have on Whitelands for your own enjoyment. This could be your own event, gath-ering for a society, a place to chill out between lectures or even a decent venue for a big Whitelands pre drinks before the night ahead. You don’t always have to be stuck in your flat. We’re hoping to keep the improvement up on this campus so if you have any great ideas or suggestions...or maybe even a slight complaint, please feel free to contact my email and let me know what you got to say; [email protected]. Hope you all have had a great start to the year! Wade Tomlinson, Whitelands CP.

Ever felt that Richmond Park is just too large to walk all the way around on foot? Ever decided against a trip to
Richmond because the bus is always too busy and stuffy to ride? That could now all change!
RSU have introduced a brand new bike pool for students to do exactly what they should be doing. Having the opportunity to freely ride around the local area and wit-ness some of the most prestigious sights you wouldn’t normally see on foot.
With the environment in its ever changing ways, this new bike pool is a fantastic way to help reduce Roehampton’s carbon foot-print and show other Universities across the country that Roehampton is playing its part in trying to go green and help the environment.
‘On Your Bike’ is the new scheme put for-ward by the RSU where students can rent out a bike and step out (or ride outside) the Roehampton gates and enjoy a peace-ful ride around one of the most prestigious parks in London, Richmond park, or a relax-ing river ride along the Themes.
The procedure is simple:
1. Fill in a disclaimer form at RSU reception.
2. Make sure you have completed everything on the checklist provided.
3. Hand in your £10 deposit along with your student card to reception
4. Get the keys, high visibility jacket and lights from reception and ride away!
5. Hand in your keys back to RSU reception before 5pm weekdays.
No gimmicks, no catches - ‘On Your Bike’ is a brand new free bike scheme which benefits you! Hope to see you riding around in the near future whilst the days are still light!
Congratulations to Environmental Champion Tessa Willy for winning the Green Champion Award at this year’s Wandsworth Green Champion Awards – the 2nd time in 3 years that the award has gone to someone from Roehampton University
Jonathon Horner from the University’s Property and Facilities Management team said, “I hope that Tessa’s award
will inspire us all to help make Roehampton a greener University and perhaps some of you might like to sign up for Project Dirt” details for the two Project Dirt activities are available at www.projectdirt.com/groups, then located by searching for ‘Roehampton’.
Student Radio Station is a Breath of Fresh Air
For those of you who haven’t heard it yet, RSU now has it very own radio station. Newly launched on Fresher’s Sunday, Fresh Air (get it?) runs 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, and offers a great mix of music, as well as a range of student-created shows.
The station can be heard in various social spaces around campus, as well as streamed live on your laptops. Just visit our website (www.roehamptonstudent.com) and click on the radio player icon.
It’s all very much in its infancy at the moment, and as you may expect, there have been both teething and technical problems, not to mention a ‘Challenge Anneka’ style rush to get it up-and-running for the beginning of term. But running it most definitely is, and things will only get bigger, better, and more ambitious as we settle in!
At Fresh Air, we aim to play the best mix of music, from across the genres and decades, to suit the occasion – be it revising at 3am, getting ready to go out to Fez, or trying to shake the bleary-eyed morning blues. So whack it on and give it a listen.
I’ve been incredible impressed by the students who have been in to record shows already. At the moment the student-presented shows run early evening, but hopefully once we get into a regular rhythm, we can expand this.
On Monday evenings we have ‘Grey Matters’ - intelligent political debate with Alistair and Ben, followed by ‘Ooh La La’ – girly gossip and lively features with Jess and Adella. Tuesday evenings, Mike T brings you the hottest new music in the indie/electro show, followed by the irreverent banter that is ‘Two Guys, 1 Plut’.
On Wednesdays we have ‘The Music Sounds Better with Alex & Becca’ the latest, greatest-music and going-ons around campus, and also ‘Reality Check’ – thought-provoking urban music with Shane Sheppard.
‘Freedom Spark’ brings you alternative music, both new and old, as well as gig-guides and musical discussion on Thursday evenings. While Fridays sees Dan and Jay bring you ‘Kick-Off’ - a round-up of that week’s university and national sporting events, as well as a look forward to the weekend’s action. Before Jack Barton’s ‘Transmission’ gets you in the mood for The Bop.
Thanks also to those who signed-up at Freshers Fare
to get involved with the station, the response has been overwhelming, so you may have to patient, but I will try and get as many people on board as possible.
For full show listings please visit our website. Also, if you have any ideas or suggestions then please e-mail [email protected]

VOLUN-TOURISM
What was something to distract myself from writing essays at the end of last year
turned into my adventure of a life time. So it just proves that procrastination really can pay off!
Mid April last year I decided I just couldn’t go home to Northern Ireland this summer, I love my mother but the prospect of almost four months living at home again in her company was more than a little daunting. Realizing I wanted to travel I started looking up all sorts of volun-tourism companies; there are hundreds out there all willing to send you away and take copious amounts of your money - Beware! I finally found a company called WAVA; Work and Volunteer Abroad, they offered an eight week package for a reasonable price so I got in contact. By this point I’d spoken to at least ten other companies all willing to take deposits, WAVA spent two hours on the phone with me really grilling me over whether I would be able to cope with such a trip and whether I was suited to the project I wanted to do. Eventually I went in for an interview and they decided I would be a scout for them, not just a volunteer. Two months later I jetted off, on my own, to Uganda. Arriving in roasting Kampala; the countries capital, I was met by my project co-ordinator and we began our five hour journey back to the project in the south of the country. The first forty eight hours were the hardest, everything was so unbelievably alien and strange. I was the only Muzungu (Lugandan for traveller) for four weeks running! I picked up the language somewhat and just got stuck in. I did everything from carrying twenty litres of water a day on my head, carrying babies around on my back, teaching the alphabet, teaching AIDS/HIV awareness and giving safe sex talks. So basically carrying & teaching!
Yes I did get proposed to many times in fact
apparently I am worth two cows, but not two cows and a goat. I tried it, but it wasn’t happening a goat was too much. Not surprising really! The food was rice and beans, or matooke and beans, or pumpkin and beans everyday. For a change we would go into Masaka and eat street food, as dangerous as it sounds it was delicious and cheap. Internet access was dodgy to say the least, the government would switch it off at any hour of the day because they hadn’t paid the electricity companies. The water would turn off and we would have to go to the well instead of the main tap, it would rain for hours on end and everything in the village would come to a stand still. But then the sun would come out and the children would come home and the fields would be filled with them all playing football and hanging from the goal posts. We would teach the children duck-duck-goose and play endless games of football with more than twenty players on each team. Being beaten by a small African child takes some getting used to.
More than anything the beauty of the countryside and the people who occupy it really struck me, the people live simpler lives but they rarely complain or appear dissatisfied. Instead they work hard and send their children to school with many older children having to take years out of education to afford to go back and finish. One boy Mahad was twenty one and finishing his A Levels, education is priceless and working hard is just an accepted part of life. Living in a country where the concept of time is meaningless was challenging. No importance is attached to time, man moves time in Africa it doesn’t move around him. It reached a point during my stay where I would have to ask if we were talking about Muzungu time or African time; such was the difference. When a class was agreed to start at nine but really started at ten thirty you learnt to slow down. Mpola Mpola (slow slow) everyday, it was refreshing to let the western notions of deadline and efficiency go. It is however easier to understand why perhaps progress is slower in rural areas;
there is no importance placed on finishing or starting to any degree.
Instead what is considered vital is family, land to cultivate and livestock. If you have those you are a wealthy man in Africa. Whilst there a family took me under their wing, the mamma would send the youngest daughter with potatoes for me (they found out I was Irish) and I would send mangoes back. It was wonderful to feel accepted or at least valued in the community, so much so I was given a tribal name by the village; Namayanja Becca. It means from the heart, Mamma Kizza gave it to me after many potatoe-mango weeks.
After eight weeks I left the village and went white water rafting on the Nile and spent three days on safari in Murchison Falls. I needed a break from the village lifestyle and I wanted to see more of Uganda and its beautiful landscape. I had an amazing time and met many people at the hostels both African and travelers like myself. I found many people shared similar views on traveling and that I too have now caught what is known as the “bug”; sounds expensive...
Trying to sum it all up in one article feels impossible, what I would say is do it! Go! If you want to do it then work fourteen hour shifts and don’t go to Fez every week like I did, because it was the most worthwhile thing I’ve ever done. Don’t rule anything out, it’s always possible and you won’t regret it.
“Yes I did get proposed to many times in

There›s no fussy family to hinder your experiments and no one you need to impress, so you can really have a ball and make the best of this opportunity to learn. Think about it, you›re the only one who has to know if you make a hash of things (other than potatoes)! Anyway, down to business...

Top 3 Tips1) Check out the fresher’s guide that I wrote last year on my blog: http://fraichefood.blogspot.com/2010/09/fraichers-guide-part-1.html2) Always cook for two - that way you can fridge up leftovers and enjoy the same meal the following day for no extra effort, or you can get in the good books of your new flatmates. 3) Please, please, please, be experi-mental, creative and have fun in the kitchen - don’t stick to what you know. You’ve got nothing to lose!
Crab and Chilli LinguineTime: 25 mins (You can do it in 20 or less though)Cost: £1.25 per person (approx)Serves: 2
Ingredients: - 210g linguine - 1 x 43g dressed crab meat - 1 red chilli - 2 garlic cloves - 1 lemon - 100ml single cream - A sploosh white wine (your choice, I used Echo Valley California Chardonnay) - Extra virgin olive oil- Salt and pepper- Chopped parsley
Method:
1) First of all get a pan of about a litre of salted water on the boil. Be generous with the salt. Put a deep frying pan/wok on a medium heat.
2) Peel and slice the garlic
gloves. If, like me, you don’t like it too hot, cut the chilli lengthways and remove the top, then get rid of the seeds. Leave them if you do have a preference for extra heat. Chop the chilli small.
3) Once the water is boiling, add the linguine to the saucepan. Add a lug (about 1-2 tbsp) of olive oil to the wok, and chuck in the garlic and chilli.
4) Once the garlic is turning golden, squeeze the juice of half a lemon into the wok, then add the crab meat and mix it in. Add a good sploosh (65ml-ish?) of white wine and then stir in the cream.
5) Once the linguine is cooked, or preferably very nearly cooked, remove from the heat, drain most of the cooking water (reserving a cou-ple of splashes or more) and then add to the wok, with the reserved cooking water.
6) Season to taste with salt and pepper and mix everything together thoroughly.
7) Serve with a salad, or on its own. Garnish with some chopped fresh or dried parsley and a further drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice. Indulge.
Top 3 Tips1. Substituting cheap cuts of meat with tinned or dried pulses and beans few times a week will benefit your waistline and wallet, as well as the environment. Long live fexitarianism!2. Grocery shopping in the evening will help you land amazing end-of the-day deals. Even works at farmers' markets.3. Eat locally produced fruit and vege that is in season to maximize nutritional gain, minimize cost and help the envi-ronment.
Warm Roast Vege-table and Puy Lentil Salad with ChevreThis elegant but nutritious and fulfilling meal is high in iron and fiber.
Ingredients:1kg of seasonal vegetables (sweet pota-toes, peppers, carrots, red/yellow on-ions, courgettes, asparagus, mushrooms etc.)one 400g tin of puy lentils in brine (pep-pery lentil form the Le Puy region in France)a generous piece of good quality goat's
cheese such as french Chevre2-3 cloves of garlicgenerous glug of olive oil (not extra virgin as it turns into trans-fats when heated up)2 tbs rosemary and/or thyme (fresh or dried)pinch of salt and pepper
method:Chop the vegetables accord-ing to size (e.g. sweet potato cooks fast so cut chunky whereas carrots slowly so cut small) and coat in herbs, olive oil, pressed garlic, salt and pepper. Roast on an oven tray until tender (30-40 minutes) at 180'C. Add drained puy lentils to veg-etables and mix so that the salad is evenly dressed and warm. Serve with generous slices of Chevre that have been gently warmed up on a dry non-stick pan. Enjoy with friends or store rest for later consumption to reheat or eat cold.Best served with a crisp glass of Pinot Noir.

What is it?!Female Fit Fridays is a new project to help encourage more females to become more active and at the same time enjoy it.
The project aims to
• Increase the number of female students taking part in sport and physical activity
• Raise awareness of sessions and link to already ex-isting opportunities
• Build confidence
• Break down barriers to participation
• And the perfect excuse to have some fun!Sessions will be held every Friday between 6-7pm. Monte Hall – Next to the Student Union Bar (Froebel Campus). Just turn up!
October’s sessions will be Street Dance and Self Defence.
These sessions will be based on beginner levels, and are free!
We don’t just give you the opportu-nity to play amazing sports - we
also give you the opportunity to use sport to develop new skills, gain qualifi-cations and get experienced.
This might not appeal if you are in your first year, but just think how it can be of use to you in the future……….???
• Something on your CV which makes you stand out• Actual experience that you can refer to in job interviews• Real life examples of the skills that you have
Sport Roehampton has just launched a new scheme - ‘Coach-Ed’ - which aims to give you MORE opportunities!
How it works:
- The ‘Coach-Ed’ scheme seeks out sports courses running locally and advertises them to all Sport Roehampton members.
- The scheme offers £5 off the course value for every hour you can commit to volunteering back to a Uni-versity Club and/or the community.
- You will be supported in find-ing the place in which to give back your hours.
- Once qualified, you will be notified of opportunities as they come online, in order for you to gain more experience. There may also be opportu-nities for paid work.
If you are interested in volunteering in sports but don’t wish to go down the
qualification route, Sport Roehampton can also assist you in finding an appro-priate outlet for you to volunteer.
You could also sign up to be a London 2012 Sport Maker where volunteering just 10 hours can earn you free official adidas kit and will enter you into a prize draw to win sports tickets.
For further details about all coach educa-tion and sports volunteering please go to http://www.roehampton.ac.uk/sport-roehampton or email James Christmas on [email protected]

4. If you do decide to splurge, ask yourself these questions: Will you still like this item in a couple of month’s time? Will you get a lot of use out of it? Will it transcend the seasons? If the answer to all the above is yes, then go for it. If not, then don’t. Easy.
Finally, it has recently come to my attention that another good place to look, if you have exhausted all of the above, is to check out what your Mum/Nana/Auntie/Family friend has in the back of their ward-robes. I know for a fact my Mum is a hoarder and she has clothes that are so old that they are actually coming back into fashion second time around. My colleague recently got herself a whole new wardrobe by raiding her Nan’s closet and as it happens, her Nan is a very fashionable lady!
So, as tempting as it is to rush to the shops with that loan burning a hole in your pocket, it’s always better to see what bargains are to be had first....although one day that Mulberry bag will be mine!!

I’m sure many of you took one look at your bulging bank account at the start of term and thought one thing.....shopping!! But before you go out and blow most of it on that amazing new season Mulberry handbag with the iconic postman’s lock and double chain detail (can you tell what’s on my Christ-mas wish list!), think! Once it’s gone, it’s not coming back until January so spend it wisely. Invest in some key pieces for Autumn/Winter that can take your summer wardrobe into the colder months without spending a fortune. Here is my step by step guide to looking good and still being able to go out to the Bop every week!

1. Log on to www.nus.org.uk and get yourself and NUS Extra card. They only cost £11 for the year and you can get some great savings, plus look out for certain shops doing student nights where you can pick up goody bags along with those bargains!
2. Primark is your friend. Embrace it. Love it.
3. Similarly with charity shops and markets. There are some great one-off pieces if you’re prepared to look, plus you won’t end up in that awful scenario of rocking up to the Bop in the same dress/t-shirt as at least 3 other people.

Welcome to the new academic year 2011-2012. The last academic year was a good
one for the Library, we received a 97% satisfac-tion for customer service in our annual student survey. However, we don’t like to stand still and over the summer we have made some further developments that we hope will enhance the sup-port you receive from the Library, including its resources, services and facilities. You can catch up on some of the new things for this year below.
Student Senate Students were given a sum of money from the University’s budget via Student Senate this year. Students were asked to identify spending priorities and the Library received money to develop its opening hours, facilities and resources. The Library projects that have benefitted from the funding are as follows:
• 24 hour opening of the Library – the Library will be open 24/7 for 2 weeks at Easter and a further 6 weeks in March/April. The building will be staffed by 2 Library staff and 1 security person and we will work to non-core services levels. Watch out for more about this in the November edition of FRESH and in the Library.
• Windows in WIRED – WIRED cybercafé can get very busy and con-sequently very hot, especially with windows surrounding it. Thanks to some funding from the Student Senate allocation we have been able to put an anti-glare/solar reduction film on all of the windows which should hopefully block out some of the heat and glare onto the computer screens.
• Patron Driven Acquisitions – Each year the Library adds signifi-cantly to its collection of books, ebooks, journals and other materials to support you in your studies. For the first time this year you can have a part in selecting the resources we purchase through a process called patron driven acquisitions. Thousands of additional ebooks will be added to our library catalogue for you to explore, select for pur-chase by the Library and use straight away.
What’s new in the Library?
New signage – The Library can be a confusing building to find your way around as many of the floors look the same and because it holds so many different facilities and services. This year we have finally imple-mented a new signage scheme, designed to help students find their way around and locate the resources they need with ease.
Increased computing facilities – Students have often requested more computers in the Library. During the summer we moved all of the main stock books up, so they now start on the 1st floor, which has allowed us to put in an additional 40 computer spaces on the lower ground floor. Though no longer silent, the space is designed to be used for Individual study.
Service and Support Developments:
Online Payments – along with lots of other services the Library has de-veloped its presence on the Universities online store. You will now pay for a range of Library services online, so it’s quick and easy and can be used any time of day. See the online store at https://estore.roehamp-ton.ac.uk/ and go to Library.
Library fines will also be paid entirely self service, either through the fines machines in the Library and at Whitelands or online through the link in Student MyZone. If you need any help with paying Library charg-es then just ask Library staff for more information or call the Enquiry Desk on 020 8392 3770.
Online Study and Support
In addition to skills workshops led by our li-brary staff we have developed a range of on-line materials and guides.
Moodle support sites - you can access these sites from your Moodle homepage, including Academic Skills Development, Library Research Skills and the Student Moodle Support site. Available through moodle at http://moodle.roehampton.ac.uk/
Study Guides - You can find lots of useful information on the Library web pages, the web address below will take you to study guides such as How to study…, University of Roehampton Referencing guide and guides specific to your subject to help you find the most relevant re-sources on offer. Links to the study guides can be found on the Library webpage: http://studentzone.roehampton.ac.uk/library/library-skills/index.html
Virtual Librarian Online Enquiry Service – can offer you a wide variety of information on Library and moodle services through the Frequently Asked Questions online. You can also submit an enquiry di-rectly to Library staff using the service to get a response to your query. Virtual Librarian Online Enquiry Service can be accessed via Student MyZone.
Resources Developments:
RefWorks - RefWorks is a web-based resource designed to help you to organize references and create a bibliography/reference list for your essays. Come to one of our Library workshops to find out more about how RefWorks can help you. More info about referencing and RefWorks is on this Library website. http://studentzone.roehampton.ac.uk/library/referencing/generalreferencing.html
Sage - SAGE Research Methods Online (SRMO) is a new addition to our collec-tion of resources this year. It contains over 600 books, dictionaries, encyclopae-dias on all aspects of research methodology. This resource will be of particular interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking individual research. SRMO can be accessed from any computer on campus, and offsite via Athens login, at http://srmo.sagepub.com

‘RU Inspired’ aims to inspire students to get involved with the many exciting volunteering opportunities available at the University of Roehampton. As part of the initiative, we are rolling out several Make A Difference (M.A.D.) 1-day volunteering projects.
All our projects not only aim to make volunteering more accesible to those trying to juggle their studies, part-time work or family commitments but they also aim to make volunteering more fun and rewarding.
