    Member ProfileWho is? Mandi Zonneveldt

Last year I decided to take my fitness to a new level. I went back tocompetitive netball in January after a break of almost 10 years, joined the SIL Run for the Kids training group and completed my

first fun run in March, walked the Kokoda Track in June and ran the10km Run Melbourne course in just on an hour in July.

I had the Melbourne Marathon half marathon in my sites when I felta strange click in my knee at netball training. An MRI revealed alarge tear in my cartilage and the verdict after surgery wasdevastating no running, no netball. With very little cartilage left inmy knee, the advice was to learn to love a low impact sport likecycling instead.

Not long after the surgery, over a few drinks, a very good friend ofmine, Liz Minchin, agreed to train for a very long bike ride to helpme recover. We chose Cycle Queensland, a 570km ride overnine days, starting in Goondiwindi and finishing in Brisbane(similar to the Great Victorian Bike Ride).

Our training regime consisted of weekend rides when the weatherwas nice, lots of RPM classes and a two-hour basic bikemaintenance lesson at the local bike shop.

The first two days of the ride were relatively flat with only a littlewind, giving us a chance to ease ourselves into things. The samecouldnt be said for the camping. It froze on the first night and wewere forced to make a detour on our way into the next town to try tofind some extra blankets!Day three posed the biggest challenge 100km in the hills to reachStanthorpe, a town perched on an elevated plateau in the GreatDividing Range. Im pleased to say I did the whole day in thesaddle!Liz and I were initially concerned that our girly hybrid bikes would

be out of place on the ride but we were pleasantly surprised to finda bevy of bikes including folding bikes, tandems, a foot bike andsome very strong (silly?) parents towing trailers and tag-alongs.It was an amazing experience and Ive come back even moreenthusiastic about cycling than when I left in fact Ive justrewarded myself with a hot new red road bike! Now for the nextchallenge

    Health and FitnessSupermarket Shopping Tips

Prepare yourself the right way for supermarket shopping and youll come home with a healthy hamper. Here are some tips to ensure a successful shop.

Plan your meals so you know what ingredients to add to the list

Check your pantry to check what supplies you need

Develop a routine, whether its small regular shops or larger less frequent shops. Consistency helps

    maintain your healthy eating pattern

Make a shopping list and stick to it to avoid impulse buying

Learn your supermarket layout so you know where to find things

Organise your shopping list to coordinate with the store layout

Dont shop when you are hungry, stressed, bored or rushed

Eat something before you shop or eat a healthy snack in-store

To reduce stress avoid shopping when stores are crowded

Leave the kids at home to avoid their pester power

Carry a basket for small shops, then there is a limit on how much you can buy

Choose a good trolley for big shops. Wrestling with a dodgy trolley can leave you frustrated and in need of

    a quick food fix

Shop for fresh produce first and grab a couple of salads

Simply avoid the confectionary aisle if you know youll come out of it with high-calorie items in your trolley

Ask for help to find items rather than wander into temptation

Choose a confectionary-free checkout or when at the checkout keep your eyes away from the goodies

Our new franchisees in training at theRadisson on the Gold Coast.

Eleanor from SiL West Lakes SA has reached her 3000training club award!!!

She is the loud one at all the events and the one whostops passer-bys in the street and pleads for them tocome and join her in her training!A true loyal client who has been with us for over 7 years! She is the one still talking as the pic is beingtaken!!

City to Bay SIL SANorma Dye is from Step into Life Modbury. She is 73 yrsold and has been with Steve since day 1 of his business. On Thursday she was involved in a car crash and wasadmitted to hospital. Upon visiting her, Norma said thatshe could move her arms so she was doing fine. She wasreleased from hospital on Friday and sure enough, got tothe start line of the race.

Speaking to her after the race, in her mind she was nevergoing to miss the 12km race and she mentioned that itwas the reason she recovered so quickly. Usually theremight be a bit of shock and a few weeks rest for a 73 yearold that was involved in a car accident. Not Norma! Sheis a fine example to everyone that knows her and a greatexample of a raving fan within our business but today wehad over 300 of them all together, proudly representingtheir venue.
