W h a t G o o d A r e P o s it iv e E m o t io n s ?

This article opens by noting that posit ive emotions do not f i t exis ting models ofemotions. Consequently, a new m odel is advanced to describe the form and function ofa subset of posit ive emotions, including joy, interest , contentment, and love. This newmodel posits that these posit ive emotions serve to broaden an individual 's momentarythought-action repertoire, which in turn has the effect of building that individual 'sphysical, intellectual, and social resources. E mp irical evidence to support this broaden-and-build model of posit ive emotions is reviewed, and implications for emotionregulation and health prom otion are discussed.

It appears thatthe specific action tendencies nam ed for p ositiveemotions are not nea rly as specific as tho se named fornegative emo tions.
