From the Principal Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,

Green Spaces—The Story Con nues

Earlier this week I informed parents and staff that the College had submi ed a revised Develop-ment Applica on to the Town of Victoria Park seeking approval to convert 28/30 Teague Street into green space for passive recrea on and other educa onal purposes.

Plans/details of the proposed development can be viewed via the Town’s online consulta on hub, Your Thoughts at h ps://yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au. To access the ‘Your Thoughts’ hub, select the yellow ‘Your Thoughts’ tab on the homepage, select the ‘Development applica ons’ tab then select the relevant applica on.

The Council has been directed by the State Administra ve Tribunal to reconsider its decision at the Ordinary Council Mee ng to be held on 21 May 2019.

It is vitally important that our individual and collec ve views in rela on to the applica on are clearly communicated to the Council. As such, I strongly encourage all members of our commu-nity to u lise the avenues that are available for this purpose.

Please do not underes mate the importance of expressing your support for this important opportunity for our current and future genera ons of students. An investment of 15‐30 minutes of your me will be an invaluable contribu on towards the poten al success of this ini a ve.

cont...from Page 1 Movie Night

On behalf of the College community I extend our apprecia on to the Friends of Frayne for hos ng the Movie Night last Friday evening. Thank you to the many families who were able to a end this very well supported func on. I thank Jasmine Collier, Kelly Chambers, Melody Miles, Tricia Green, Bronwyn Bergl, Rosemary Hadarin, Jill Kosovich and their extensive and excep onal band of parent and student helpers for the organisa on and conduct of this wonderful community building event. A special acknowledgment is also extended to Ian Johnston and Lee Barker from our Grounds and Maintenance team, for their personal support and prac cal assistance.

I invite and strongly encourage all members of our College community to support the many func ons and opportuni es sponsored by the Friends of Frayne. This year their focus con nues to be on community building and posi ve involvement by all members of our College. It has been very pleasing to hear many posi ve comments from those who have par cipated in either some or all of the scheduled ac vi es conducted so far this year.

In the busyness of life, it is important that we do not lose sight of the fact that Catholic educa on is a partnership – a partnership between the College, students and parents. Strong partnerships are built on solid rela onships; rela onships that are strengthened through an ac ve involvement in the many formal and informal events, func ons and opportuni es that the College and the Friends of Frayne provide in support of students. Regular and ac ve par cipa on in the life of the College community can only enhance the educa onal opportuni es and outcomes for all students.

On a personal note – thank you Friends of Frayne for the Choc Tops!

Code of Conduct ‐ Respec ul Rela onships

The College’s Code of Conduct outlines the expecta ons and associated responsibili es that all members of our learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ are expected to uphold. It recognises the significance of appropriate, meaningful and respec ul rela onships and is inclusive of staff, students a ending the College, their parents/guardians and immediate and extended families. The Code of Conduct is also applicable to volunteers and visitors to our campuses including contractors and alumni. The Code of Conduct clearly addresses the shared responsibili es of all members of the College community in building a safe and respec ul College community. As such, everyone has the right to differing opinions and views and to raise concerns, as long as they do so respec ully and as a community working together.

The Code of Conduct is not meant to be exhaus ve. It does not a empt to provide a detailed list of expected behaviours. Rather, it is intended as a guide to assist students, staff and parents/guardians by se ng out the standards of behaviour expected of them in the school environment, or when a ending a func on or ac vity of, or related to, the College in any loca on at which the College is represented. As such, I request that all members of our College community familiarise themselves with the specifics of the Code of Conduct accessible at: h ps://www.ufcc.wa.edu.au/images/pdf/code_of_conduct_131216.pdf.

Chaplain’s Reflection The Journey of Life

In our journey of life we can have moments of grace in which we can see the glory of Christ; moments, it seems we can touch the heavens and we are transformed by happiness. These moments are to help us later, to sustain us with hope and give us strength to trust in God, when the moments of sufferings and the cross come our way. We are called to par cipate in the death and resurrec on of Christ and also to be trans-formed by his glory.

Abraham laughed and rejoiced the day he held his son Isaac in his arms for the first me. He felt so happy and grateful to God for fulfilling his promises. Surely this moment was one of the most joyful and upli ing days of his life. Several years later, Abraham is put to the test by the Lord with a very painful request: the life of Isaac. The man who had le his country and given to God his past and his present; was being asked to give his future, his projects and his dreams. This was a very low and difficult moment in the life of Abraham. God does not want the death of anyone but wants to know if Abraham is ready to trust in Him completely. Not half or one third of Abraham´s heart, but everything, the whole heart. Surely, Abraham recalled the glorious moment when Isaac was born. His experience of God helped him to believe and trust wholly in Him.

Each one of us can have the same experience of the ups and downs of life. High moments full of happiness in which we see God close, bless-ing us with so much good and low mes when we are in darkness, doubts, difficul es and pain. We should not judge our life for the hurt of one moment or the last painful event. We must recall, like Abraham, the joys and blessings of God which will help us to trust in God; a God who loves us so much who did not spare his own Son for us; a God who will not refuse anything and is always there to help us. Our weakness-es, sufferings and pains will be transformed into the glory of Christ’s resurrec on which will be ours in heaven. Un l then we must journey the ups and downs of life, awai ng the fulfilment of the promises of God in our lives.

120 Year Celebration Story cont... In Western Australia Mother Clare Buggy also suffered much from the difficul es of the founda on, especially phys-ically in the early days. But she was strong enough to spend a long life of service to God, her community and many genera ons of children "with serenity, gentleness. and that indefinable ‘something’ that was a compound of rare holiness, good breeding and joyful endurance”. She was con nually to be seen on the playground with rosary beads in hand, keeping a watchful eye on the children. Nothing of their an cs escaped her and although kind and gentle, she was nicknamed "clever s cks". In her later years she was a small, plump lady, a gentle, wi y and whole-some person. "She was a small rounded lovely human being ... a woman of prayer but very prac cal in it. No piousity ... she really lived out what she believed in." In her advanced years she s ll showed interest in all the human facets of life - from the government's free milk scheme for school children to the eye colour of a young music teacher's boy pupil. She became an ardent fan of the radio programme "Dad and Dave" and a one-eyed barracker for the Claremont Football Team whose defeats in her telling sounded like victories!

She suffered again physically in her last few years, this me from a cancer. While she gave li le indica on of the severity of her pain, she did pass a remark that gave some glimpse into her soul and some indica on of the source of her strength. Every morning at Mass I place on the paten all my sufferings of mind and body, past, present and future to be offered with Jesus to the Eternal Father.

She died, “a li le old Victorian lady and a loving Sister of Mercy" on 21 August 1951, at the age of 91. As one sister, who knew her only in her old age, put it, Mother Clare kept a li le hold on your heart forever.

Harmony Day

This year is the Interna onal Year of Indigenous Languages and to celebrate, the Year 6s went to the Victoria Park Library to par cipate in a special Harmony Day event. The workshop was run by mul -award winning music duo, Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse. They performed the Noongar language in song with a Wanjoo (Welcome song). Students were immersed with the culture by joining in the ac ons and singing the Wanjoo Song. The interac ve workshop was a fun and engaging way to combine songs in Noongar language with storytelling and transla ons.
