FRANKFURT SPOTLIGHTFOR STUNNING ALFA 4C CONCEPT

ALFA ROMEO'S striking 4C concept was unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March, but itwill be the centerpiece of the brand’s display in Frankfurt – and it’s sure to get even moreadmiring looks. The concept hints at an affordable rear-drive model that likely will launch at theend of next year priced at about 45,000 euros.

Alfa enthusiasts have dreamed for almost two decades of the return of such a car as the 4Cafter the Duetto Spider was discontinued in 1994. The similarly styled 8C Competizione, whichwas built from 2007-2008, was too expensive for most Alfa buyers and the supercar’s produc-tion run was limited to 1,000 units.

The rear-engine 4C coupe was designed at the company's styling center in Turin under thedirection of Lorenzo Ramaciotti and Marco Tencone. Thanks to an innovative constructionmethod, which combines carbon fiber and aluminum, the 4C will be very lightweight. Alfa istargeting an 850kg curb weight. Alfa says the 4C production version will be a halo car that willbring new customers into showrooms. It will be sold around the world and will help thebrand’s return to the United States.

SUPER-SLIM STUDYTARGETS CROWDED CITIES

AAUUDDII says the trim, two-seat Urban Concept is just the car for crowded modern cities, wherespace is at a premium, and the car may go into production if Frankfurt show visitors demon-strate enough enthusiasm.

The concept is narrow so it’s easy to drive and park on congested streets. Its slim size meansthat the two occupants don't quite sit next to each other. The driver's seat is slightly forward ofthe passenger’s. The concept also doesn't have conventional doors. The single-piece roofslides back to enable occupants to enter. The concept, which Audi calls a technical study, hasfeatures that cut its weight to less than 500kg. It's built from a combination of aluminum andcarbon fiber reinforced polymer, which makes it very light but strong and safe. To save weight,the seats are integrated into the car's monocoque structure and can't be adjusted, but the driv-er can move the steering wheel and pedals around to get comfortable.

The concept is driven by two electric motors powered by a lithium ion battery and has arange of between 50km and 60km. It has a tiny luggage compartment that Audi says is bigenough for short city trips. The car is 3200mm long, 1200mm tall and 1700mm wide.

CONTINENTAL GTCGETS A POWER BOOST

The second-generation BENTLEY Continental GTC has a more self-confident and more mus-cular look than the previous model. It is also more comfortable with added legroom for rear-seatpassengers, a touchscreen infotainment system and a neck-and-shoulder warmer.

The four-seat convertible’s 6.0-liter, W12 engine now delivers 575 hp, compared with 560 hppreviously, and maximum torque is 700 Nm, compared with 650 Nm. A new, quick-shift trans-mission from ZF makes especially fast gear changes possible. The latest GTC is 70kg lighterthan the current car.

“The technology, performance and the high design quality invested in this model mean thatwe are opening a new chapter for the Bentley convertible driver,” Bentley CEO WolfgangDuerheimer said. Deliveries of the new luxury model, which has a multi-layered fabric top, beginin December. Just over 10,000 units of the current Bentley Continental GTC have been soldsince its introduction in 2006. More than 2,000 went to customers in Europe.

The car can accelerate from 0-100kph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 314kph.

1 SERIES GROWS UPBMW’S second-generation 1 series is longer and wider than the current model with more

interior space that gives rear passengers more legroom and boosts luggage space by 30 litersto 360 liters.

With the entry-level 1 series, BMW seeks to attract younger buyers. The five-door version willarrive in showrooms in September because this is the most popular variant, followed by athree-door next year. Coupe and convertible versions will come to market in 2014/2015, butthese may be badged as 2 series. Next spring an ultra-fuel-efficient 1-series variant will go onsale with emissions of 99g/km. It will be the first production BMW to have CO2 emissionsbelow 100g/km.

BMW says the 1 series has many driver assistance and mobility services unique in a compactcar, such as lane departure warning with collision warning, and road sign recognition that forthe first time also registers signs that prohibit passing. Big improvements have been made inperceived interior quality of the car. Launched in 2004, the 1 series has become BMW’s thirdbest-selling model after the 3 series and 5 series, with 196,000 units sold globally last year.

ELECTRIC i3 TARGETSTHE iPHONE GENERATION

The i3 electric car is being shown as a concept but not much is expected to change whenthe production version of the subcompact goes on sale in 2013. The i3 is the first model fromBMW’S so-called “i” subbrand, which also includes the i8 sports car due in 2014.

BMW said its i cars are “born electric,” designed as alternative fuel vehicles from the groundup. The rear-drive i3 has a 170-hp electric motor over the rear axle that allows the car to accel-erate up to 150kph.

The four-seat car has front-hinged front doors and rear-hinged “coach doors.” The upperbody is made of carbon fiber while aluminum is used for the drivetrain module that holds thebattery, electronics and motor.

BMW used lightweight materials to offset the heavy lithium ion battery pack and give the i3 anexpected range of 130km to 160km. The car weighs 1,250kg. An i3 version with a rangeextender is in the planning stages. BMW has not released pricing for the i3, but sources saidthe car will cost above 40,000 euros.

DS5 AIMS TO BELOUNGE ON WHEELS

The DS5 has a European debut after a concept was unveiled at the Shanghai auto show inApril. The five-seat car is the third, and largest, model in the brand’s upscale DS range.

CITROEN says the design of the DS5 has nothing in common with the mid-range C5. The newcar rests on a different platform, internally known as Platform 2, while the C5 is based on Plat-form 3 and has a conventional steel spring suspension. The DS5 has a hydraulic suspension.

The DS5 is comparatively compact, but is very spacious inside with what Citroen calls aninterior “lounge atmosphere” and above-average width. The DS5 will be offered with a diesel-electric drivetrain. Power comes from a 163-hp, front-wheel-drive 2.0-liter diesel engine and,when needed, a 37-hp, rear-wheel-drive electric motor. That makes all-wheel drive part of thehybrid package. The hybrid has CO2 emissions of 99g/km and its powertrain is basically thesame as that of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4. The complete e-drive module, including powerelectronics, is installed in the vehicle’s rear end, which means the front end stays the same ongasoline, diesel or hybrid models.

FRANKFURT SHOW ENJOYSPOST-CRISIS SURGE

German automakers are enjoy-ing a great year as car production,headcount and market share areon the rise at home and abroad.The forward momentum comesjust as the German auto industryassociation (VDA) is preparing tohost the world’s biggest automo-

tive show of the year. VDA President MatthiasWissmann talked with Automotive News EuropeEditor-in-Chief Harald Hamprecht about the show’sgrowing popularity.

What can we expect from the IAA thisyear?

The IAA is certainly the high point of 2011 froman automotive standpoint. Even before the crisistwo years ago, it had expanded its position as the

most important mobility fair worldwide. With the64th IAA for passenger cars, we are again on acourse for growth. We expect more than 900,000visitors and about 900 exhibitors from western andeastern Europe, Asia and North and SouthAmerica. In 2009, it was just 781 exhibitors from30 countries. The exhibition area will grow by15,000 sq m to 210,000 sq m. And we have a fewreturnees among the international automakers.

Which automakers are coming back?Japanese automakers that weren’t there in 2009,

such as Honda and Mitsubishi, will be exhibitingagain. Cadillac and Chevrolet, which canceled theirparticipation in 2009, and Korea’s SsangYong, willonce again be represented. China’s Changan and

How many suppliers will participate?There will be more than 300, pushing us above

the level seen in 2009. Schaeffler, Faurecia andWoco are new exhibitors. Behr, Brembo, Conti-nental, Delphi, Denso and Tenneco are back.Chinese suppliers Foryou General, Zhejiang San-hua Automobile and Ningbo Joyson Automotiveare also coming. They will underscore the slogan ofthis year’s IAA: ‘Future comes as standard.’

Will the many world premieres give new-car sales a push?

The IAA is the mobility fair with the greatestmedia response globally. The brand-new modelsthat will be on display for the first time will naturallyhave a positive effect. Our surveys continue toshow that a large proportion of visitors come to

Frankfurt because they intend to buy a new car in the six months after the IAA.

STUNNING 458SPIDER TO DEBUT

The 458 Spider is the convertible version of the stunning 458 Italia two-seat coupe and itsFrankfurt unveiling is eagerly awaited by fans of the supercar brand. The 458 Spider replacesthe 430 Spider. It will have a folding hardtop instead of the canvas top offered on the 430.

The 458 Spider's powertrain is the same as that on the 458 Italia coupe – a normally aspirat-ed 4.5-liter V-8 delivering 570 hp coupled with a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Sales in Europe begin in September; U.S. shipments follow in the first quarter.The Spider will cost more than the coupe, which in Italy starts at 197,000 euros. FERRARI

customers normally pay another 15 to 20 percent on top of the car list price by purchasing per-sonalization items from the company’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti program. These items range from5,760 euros for racing carbon fiber seats to 2,640 euros for a rearview camera.

The 458 Spider continues Ferrari's frantic product renewal as it seeks to boost sales andremain the world’s most profitable automaker by operating margin (a hefty 15.8 percent of rev-enues last year).

PANDA GETS BIGGER,ROOMIER AND GREENER

The Panda, Europe’s best-selling minicar, is bigger, roomier and more fuel efficient in its latestgeneration.

The new car has minimal styling changes but is 110mm longer than the current model at3640mm. Most of the growth in length is on the rear overhang to increase the car’s trunk space,as well as offer more legroom to rear passengers, who also benefit from rear sliding seats for thefirst time. The Panda is 50mm wider at 1640mm, which means it can seat three passengerscomfortably in the rear. Most minicars have room for only two passengers in the back.

Designed under the direction of FIAT Styling Director Roberto Giolito, the father of the suc-cessful Fiat 500 minicar, the Panda sits on the latest development of Fiat’s Mini vehicle architec-ture, also used by the new Lancia Ypsilon. Like the current Panda, the new version will beoffered only as a five-door because Fiat’s other minicar, the 500, is a three-door.

At launch, the new Panda, which goes on sales early next year, will come only with front-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive variant will arrive next summer.

CIVIC GETS A CLEANERDIESEL, BETTER RIDE

HHoonnddaa engineers have enhanced the ride quality of the new Civic, while retaining the sportyhandling of the current model. The company hopes the improvement will boost flagging sales ofthe company’s second best-selling model in Europe after the Jazz.

European sales of the Civic fell 27 percent to 26,387 in the first half, according to JATODynamics. The ninth-generation Civic will reach European showrooms in early 2012. The carkeeps much of the styling of the outgoing model.

Honda’s Japanese development team worked with European colleagues and external expertsto enhance the five-door hatchback’s handling to cope with Europe’s varied road conditionsthat include fast highways, along with poorly surfaced country lanes.

Initial testing for the model was carried out at Honda’s r&d facilities in Japan before the devel-opment team transferred to Europe to finalize the car. Said Kazuo Sunaoshi, chassis develop-ment leader: “Every time we visited Europe during the development of the car, we achieved sig-nificant improvements in the ride and handling, tuning the car for the local demands.”

BOLD I30 IS KEYCHALLENGER IN COMPACT SEGMENT

HYUNDAI hopes a bolder design will help its new-generation i30 hatchback compete better against rivals in Europe’s compact segment such as the Volkswagen Golf and FordFocus.

The new i30 has Hyundai’s signature front face, a hexagonal shaped front grille, along withjewel-like front headlamps, designed to give the car “a sense of refinement and luxury,” saidThomas Buerkle, Hyundai Europe’s chief designer.

Giving the i30 a refined look is in keeping with Hyundai’s aim to go upscale into what itcalls a “modern premium” position. The i30 will be important in helping Hyundai to reach itsgoal of boosting its European sales to 500,000 by 2013, up 10 percent from 2010. “Weexpect this next-generation i30 to play a significant role in developing our brand image inEurope and strengthen the vehicle’s position as our best seller in Europe,” said AllanRushforth, Hyundai Europe’s chief operating officer.

The new i30 likely will go on sale in February.

KIA Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer continues the brand’s design revolution with a sportysedan concept that debuts in Frankfurt.

The sleek, muscular car signals a distinctive new styling direction for Kia, Schreyer said. “Nomatter from which perspective you look at it, this concept car is roaring with energy and readyfor takeoff,” he said. “I believe the car is a strong statement from Kia: We are ready to fast for-ward to an all-new chapter.”

Kia is not saying whether the four-door, rear-wheel-drive concept will reach production, butsome of its styling could end up on a halo model planned by Kia.

Schreyer was Audi chief designer from 1994-2002, then VW’s chief designer from 2002-2005. Since joining Kia in 2006, he has won praise for transforming the look of Kia’s main-stream cars.

DEFENDER GETS AMODERN MAKEOVER

The DC100 (Defender Concept 100) study highlights LAND ROVER’S ideas for updating theiconic Defender while keeping the character of the SUV that launched in 1948.

The British brand plans to introduce a fresh version of the rugged, boxy off-roader in 2015.The next Defender will need to balance the model’s key characteristics while finding ways towin new customers, managing director John Edwards said.

Among the ideas showcased in the DC100 are:■ A terrain scanner with technology similar to that found on fighter jets to warn of potentialobstacles when the SUV is being driven off road and offer alternative routes. AGILE GS TAKESON BMW 5 SERIES

The LEXUS GS hybrid has a world debut in Frankfurt. The gasoline version was unveiled at thePebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California in August. In the mid-term, Lexus aims toboost the GS’s share to 3 percent from 2 percent in Europe’s medium-premium segment,where it competes against the BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E class. The gain wouldincrease GS sales to between 4,000 and 6,000 units.

Lexus’ goal is for 60 percent of the new GS sales to be hybrids, the same percentage as withother Lexus models. Last year, Lexus sold 30,411 units in Europe, of which just 1,487 were GSmodels. Of the GS cars sold only 686 were hybrids. Lexus officials say the GS’ sales target isrealistic because the new car drives better than the current model, has a bolder design, morespacious interior and segment-leading technology. Its revised platform is more rigid comparedwith the current model, helping to make the car more agile.

The GS has a 250-hp V-6 gasoline engine, with performance boosted to 450 hp in the hybridversion.

NEW SUV AIMS TO EMULATEPORSCHE CAYENNE’S SUCCESS

MASERATI will debut a concept that hints at its Jeep Grand Cherokee-based SUV expected togo on sale in 2013. The Maserati variant features specific body panels and a new interior.

Adding an SUV to the luxury sports car brand is part of Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne’s plansto boost Maserati’s annual sales almost tenfold to 50,000 units from 5,675 last year.

The SUV likely will be powered by Maserati’s 4.7-liter V-8 unit capable of about 450 hp, cou-pled with ZF’s eight-speed automatic transmission.

Possibly only for Europe, the SUV could also get a diesel variant using VM Motori’s 3.0-liter V-6, with power increased to over 300 hp from the 241 hp the engine currently delivers on theGrand Cherokee exported to Europe. Maserati declined to give a price target for the SUV, but inEurope it would cost considerably more than the Grand Cherokee 5.7-liter V-8 Overland that inItaly starts at 63,800 euros.

The SUV will be built alongside the Grand Cherokee in Chrysler Group’s Jefferson North plantin Detroit.

B CLASS GETS SPORTIERLOOK, NEW TECHNOLOGY

MERCEDES-BENZ says its new B class will have more new technology than it has ever offeredbefore when launching a new-generation car. The technology includes an all-new 1.6-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine designed for both transverse and longitu-dinal installation and a four-cylinder downsized 1.8-liter diesel, the first compression-ignitionengine mounted transversely in a Mercedes car.

The engines have a fuel-saving stop-start system and can be paired with a new dual-clutchtransmission or a six-speed manual transmission. The B class will also offer a radar-based colli-sion warning system with braking assistance that Mercedes says is a first in its segment andlowers the risk of rear-end accidents.

The new B class is designed so that it can be adapted for alternative drivetrains because ithas space for a battery pack or a hydrogen tank under the rear seats. The car is slightly longerthan the current model and slightly lower, giving it a more dynamic appearance, but Mercedessays its high front-seating position is kept because customers like it.

BEHRIncreasing demand for smaller, turbocharged

gasoline engines with direct injection create newdemands for thermal management, a specialty forBehr. Behr will show variations of systems that per-form charge air cooling for such engines.

BOSCHRobert Bosch will offer a “powertrain configura-

tor” that will allow show visitors to put togetherindividual powertrain configurations and calculatetheir fuel-saving potential. A real-life example of onesuch configuration is the company’s axle-splithybrid, which will soon be available in the Peugeot3008 Hybrid4. An axle-split hybrid features aninternal-combustion engine on the front axle andan electric drive for the rear axle. Other innovationson the Bosch stand will cover a wide range of timeframes: from near-term innovations aimed at pro-longing the dominance of the internal-combustion

engine; to mid-term systems to be integrated into electric vehicles; to futuristic technologies such as solar and wind power to gen-erate electricity for vehicles.

BROSEBrose will launch its e-mobility product portfolio,

the result of a new joint venture with SEW-Eurodrive, a leader in electric motors, gear unitsand control systems. The partners are pooling theirexpertise in manufacturing electric motors and cor-responding electronics and charging systems forelectric drive systems. Technology in developmentuses inductive charging technology, which chargesthe battery without physical contact. Brose is aspecialist in engineering lightweight componentsthat save fuel and therefore reduce emissions.Examples include lightweight seats, window regula-tors, thermal management systems (fans andblowers) and door systems.

CONTINENTALAmong innovations that Continental will highlight

is a driver-assistance device that includes a“stereo” camera with two electronic eyes, whichcan measure the size and distance of potentialobstacles. This can be paired with a new genera-tion of emergency brake assist, to reduce theseverity of accidents or, if possible, to avoid acci-dents entirely.

Also on Continental’s stand will be a new fuel-quality sensor, which is used to optimize operationof the fuel injection system. The company also hasa new turbocharger, to be used to facilitate down-sizing gasoline engines. In the information technol-ogy sector, the supplier will show how a mobilephone can be used as a virtual key that can openthe vehicle door and start the engine once the driv-er is in the car.

The phone can also be used to customize radio

pre-sets, seat settings and ambient lighting.Continental is working on what it calls a “MagicUI,” for user interface, for integrating information,entertainment and portable devices.

In the EV area the supplier has developed anelectric motor that does not require any rare earthmaterials.

DENSODenso showcases technologies coming into

widespread use in hybrids and electric vehicles: anew starter for start-stop systems, and an inverterfor hybrid vehicles, which converts direct currentfrom the battery to alternating current. As one ofthe largest mass-manufacturers of common-raildiesel systems, Denso will show a new injectioncontrol system, which it calls i-ART, for intelligent-Accuracy Refinement Technology.

adjustment system that can be activated by asmart phone. The company will also show seatsthat focus on weight and packaging reduction. Forinstance, a new foam pad is comfortable eventhough it’s thinner. The lower-profile foam padallows for better headroom in more fuel-efficient,aerodynamic vehicles with a lower roofline. Amongthe environmentally friendly and lightweight interiorinnovations developed by Faurecia is the use of flaxfibers with polypropylene for the Smart ForTwoinstrument panel.

pared with other commonly used coatings, creatingfuel-economy improvement benefits. Other compo-nents to be displayed, like new spark plug designs,are intended to work in conjunction with the latestturbocharged, gasoline direct-injection engines,which in turn are part of an industrywide trendtoward engine downsizing. The company also haspolymer-coated engine bearings, designed to with-stand heavy use associated with fuel-saving, stop-start systems. For electric vehicles and hybrids,Federal-Mogul developed its CrushShield material,which surrounds and insulates high-voltage cables,to protect vehicle occupants and to keep the vehi-cle’s electrical system isolated in a crash. For interi-ors, Federal-Mogul will show ambient and accentlighting modules. One new technology uses ener-gy-efficient LEDs that are also more compact topackage and less distracting for drivers to operate.

TRW’smodular technologies include electronic stability control, “scalable” camera systems, modular airbag kits and electrically powered steering systems.

WEBASTOWebasto will show a lightweight roof concept that

weighs 20kg, half the weight of a conventional roof,because of the use of materials such as polycar-bonate and a composite plastic material with whatthe company describes as a “paper honeycomb”core. Webasto has also found a way to integratesolar cells into the lightweight roof module that candeliver up to 200 watts of power. That’s enough

power to operate ventilation while parked; cool theseats; or operate an on-board cooler. Eventually,solar power could also be used to help charge thebatteries in an electric vehicle, the company said.

ZF FRIEDRICHSHAFENZF Friedrichshafen will highlight its new nine-

speed automatic transmission. The supplier saysthe unit offers fuel savings of up to 16 percent com-pared with a six-speed automatic. The transmissionis smooth because it has extremely small gearsteps and it ensures that the engine always runs atan optimal fuel consumption range. It can also befitted in hybrid vehicles, ZF says.

The transmission can also be used with ZF’s newdecouplable all-wheel drive system that will beshown in Frankfurt. The system deactivates all-wheel drive when it isn’t needed, offering further fuelsavings.

SMALL CAR THINKS BIGThe MINI Coupe is the first two-seat car to be offered by the iconic UK brand. With its eye-

catching “helmet-design” roof, the car is styled to appeal primarily to sporty, extroverted cus-tomers.

The car is being offered as a Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper Works and Cooper SD, with an out-put ranging from 122 hp to 211 hp. The new model’s strongest point is supposed to be its driv-ing dynamics. This is partly achieved with reduced air resistance and a lower center of gravity.

While the overall length and width are almost identical to the Mini hatchback, the Coupe’soverall height is 29mm lower. Its 280-liter trunk space is 20 liters larger than the four-seat MiniClubman station wagon.

The Coupe is due to reach European dealers in October, and its base price has already beenset: 21,200 euros in Germany, almost 2,000 euros more than the Mini hatchback.

The Mini Coupe and its sister model, the Mini Roadster, which launches next year, are beingbuilt at Mini’s factory in Oxford, England, alongside the brand’s hatchback, convertible andClubman models. Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, builds the Mini Countryman SUV.

SLEEK ASTRA GTCCHALLENGES VW SCIROCCO

With the sporty GTC three-door hatchback, OPEL/VAUXHALL is challenging the VolkswagenScirocco and Renault Megane Coupe. The GTC is the third body style in the Astra compactrange after the five-door hatchback and station wagon.

Opel says the GTC was developed as a stand-alone model, and its wheelbase is slightlylonger than that of its siblings. Engineers from Opel’s technical center in Ruesselsheim,Germany, and Vauxhall’s engineering center in Millbrook, England, developed a custom-madeplatform for the GTC. Key components, such as the suspension used on the front axle, werederived from the Insignia OPC high-performance car.

The GTC seats four adults and its trunk space of between 370 liters and 1,235 liters is 200liters more than some of its competitors. The UK is likely to be the biggest market for the GTC,where it is expected to account for 20 percent of Astra sales.

Opel started taking GTC orders in June. The car arrives in European showrooms toward theend of the year.

ZAFIRA MINIVANGOES UPMARKET WITH TOURER MODEL

OOPPEELL//VVAAUUXXHHAALLLL is taking the Zafira minivan upmarket, while continuing to sell the currentmodel for cost-conscious buyers. The latest generation, which Opel calls the Zafira Tourer, hasan upgraded chassis and is 190mm longer to offer occupants more cabin space and comfort.

Opel is marketing the minivan as a “lounge on wheels” following the interior improvements.The company says the Zafira’s Flex7 seating system has been improved significantly to make itmore flexible. The second seating row is no longer a bench, but has three separate seats thatmove forward or backward to give third-row passengers extra room.

The Zafira Tourer will be offered with safety technologies such as a radar-based adaptivecruise control that can apply emergency braking to prevent a collision. Also debuting in theminivan is the second-generation Opel Eye front-camera system, which features improved traf-fic-sign-reading capability. The minivan will go sale by the end of the year and will be offeredwith 1.4- and 1.8-liter gasoline engines and a 2.0-liter diesel also found in the Insignia andAstra.

508 RXH WILL BEGREEN-TECH STANDARD BETTER

With the 508 RXH, PEUGEOT adds a crossover-styled version of its 508 flagship to the alreadylaunched sedan and station wagon.

The 508 RXH will be the flagship of the 508 model line and is intended to be a green-technol-ogy standard bearer that will help raise the brand’s profile.

The 508 RXH is has a higher stance than its siblings and has the diesel-electric powertrainthat debuted in the 3008 HYbrid4. The drivetrain combines a 163-hp 2.0-liter diesel with a 47-hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle.

The 508 RXH offers fuel economy of 4.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of are 109g/km. Saleswill start next spring.

In the first half, Peugeot sold 38,800 units of the 508 sedan and wagon.

911 GETS BIGGER,MORE POWERFUL

At first glance, the new PORSCHE 911 looks very much like all the previous generations of thecar first launched in 1963. But the latest version of the iconic sports car is slightly larger with alower stance that gives it a more dynamic look.

The 911 has grown by 56mm to 4490mm and is 65mm wider at 1870mm but 11mm lowerat 1290mm. Porsche sources say the 911 was made larger so there’s enough room for ahybrid powertrain. It also gives the car a roomier interior with more leg room.

The 911’s six-cylinder boxer engine’s capacity has shrunk to 3.4 liters from 3.6 liters, but itsperformance has been increased to 350 hp from 345 hp. Fuel use has been reduced to anaverage of 8.2 liters per 100km by a variety of measures including a 50kg weight reduction,stop-start system and brake energy regeneration. A seven-speed transmission replaces the six-speed in the current car. The 911 Carrera goes on sale Dec. 3, along with the Carrera S, whichhas a 3.8-liter engine with 400 hp, up from 385 hp. The 911 Carrera will cost 88,037 euros inGermany, 2,500 more than the current model.

FRENDZY IS A VANFOR FAMILY, BUSINESS

RENAULT design chief Laurens van den Acker says the Frendzy concept takes an “originaland innovative” stance in the world of light commercial vehicles, which form an important partof the automaker’s sales.

The car-based van is intended as a solution for people who need a light commercial and fam-ily vehicle in one, Renault said.

The Frendzy features the brand’s new frontal identity, which includes a large Renault logo asits centerpiece. It is the fourth in a range of six concepts intended to highlight Renault’s newdesign philosophy. It follows the DeZir sports car, Captur crossover and R-Space minivan.

The Frendzy has a load capacity of 2,250 liters. Power comes from the same drivetrain usedin the battery-powered Kangoo Z.E, which gives the Frendzy a range of about 160km and atop speed of 130kph.

To allow easy loading, the concept has no central pillars and a sliding side door on the pas-senger’s side, which incorporates a 37-inch screen for posting messages or advertising.

TWINGO GETSA NEW FACE

RENAULT says the refreshed Twingo will be the first production vehicle to show the brand’snew design identity. The updated Twingo gets a new front end with a larger Renault logo and itwill go on sale shortly after being shown in Frankfurt.

The Twingo upgrade is a “quick and dirty” mid-life face-lift rather than an all-new vehicle, saidRenault’s new design chief Laurens van den Acker. “We’ve tried to give the car more personali-ty, so that you feel you’re connected with it,” he said.

Changes are limited to improvements of the front and rear end, “because the investments areotherwise too high,” van den Acker said.

The Twingo will be replaced in 2013 by a new model based on a new rear-wheel-drive plat-form shared with Smart’s future four-seat model.

Sales of the 4-year-old Twingo fell nearly 20 percent to just below 70,000 in the first half,according to market researchers JATO Dynamics.

PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRIDWILL BE A FRUGAL FLAGSHIP

TOYOTA’S plug-in hybrid version of the Prius compact car will be the most fuel-efficient Priusbuilt to date. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has fuel consumption of 2.2 l/100km (107 mpg US; 128 mpg UK) compared with 3.9l/100km in the standard Prius. ItsCO2 emissions are 49g/km, almost half those of the regular Prius.

The PHEV will be the first Toyota car to use a new compact lithium ion battery pack insteadof nickel-metal hydride batteries. It has a driving range of 20km in electric mode, a big improve-ment over the 2km range offered by the current model. The plug-in Prius has the same 1.8-litergasoline engine and electric motor setup as the standard Prius. Toyota says the battery can becharged in 90 minutes using a domestic electricity connection.

The PHEV will go on sale in Europe next summer as the flagship of the Prius range, joining anexpanded Toyota hybrid lineup that includes the Auris hybrid, along with a forthcoming seven-seat Prius Plus and a planned Yaris hybrid. Toyota will also debut a lightly face-lifted version ofthe regular Prius, which last year sold 43,626 units in Europe.

THE NEW YARISIS BIGGER AND SPORTIER

With its new Yaris hatchback, TOYOTA has a twofold sales strategy: 1. Target young buyerslooking for a car with innovative technology; 2. Win over cost-conscious customers.

To attract Web-savvy younger buyers, the Yaris will offer Toyota’s Touch & Go infotainmentsystem, which the company says marks a breakthrough for affordable multimedia connectivityin the subcompact segment. The system has a 6.1-inch display with touchscreen technologyand offers navigation, connected services and mobile apps.

To lure buyers on a tight budget, the price of the cheapest new-generation Yaris, which has a69-hp, 1.0-liter gasoline engine, will be the same as the current version. In Germany, the basemodel will cost 11,675 euros.

The Yaris also will offer a 99-hp, 1.3-liter gasoline engine and a 90-hp, 1.4-liter diesel unit. Agasoline-electric hybrid variant, due in late 2012, will cost more than 18,000 euros.

The Yaris is Toyota’s most popular model in Europe with sales of 164,284 last year. Toyotaexpects sales of the new Yaris to be significantly higher than the current version.

HIGH-TECH UP AIMSAT MINICAR RIVALS

In the crowded minicar segment, Volkswagen hopes the Up will stand out because of itsmodern, pragmatic design and state-of-the-art comfort and safety extras. These include agadget called a “Portable Infotainment Device” that looks like a smart phone. The device fits onthe dashboard and serves as a central display screen and control unit for the navigation,onboard computer, telephone and audio equipment.

The Up also has an emergency braking system that monitors the area in front of the car witha laser sensor and applies the brakes if a collision is imminent.

The Up is the first car in VW’s new entry-level lineup. In the coming years a whole range ofcars, grouped under the label New Small Family, will be introduced, from a coupe to a minivan.There’s also a decontented variant planned for emerging markets and VW’s sister brandsSkoda and Seat will get their own versions. Despite its small dimensions (3540mm long,1640mm wide, 1480mm tall with a 2420mm wheelbase), the Up has a good amount of interiorspace. The cargo area is 251 liters, rising to 951 liters with the rear seats folded down.
