Dear Friends: Happy Valentine’s Day to one and to all! A word on St. Valentine’s Day: It is the name of two saints about whom very little is known. One was reportedly a priest from Rome, whose head was cut off in the year 269 by the Emperor Claudius II for refusing to worship Roman gods. The other Valentine was martyred several years earlier, he was a bishop renowned for his gift of healing. Because of their obscurity, they are absent from the liturgical calendar. The popular feast celebrated on this day by the exchange of signs of love has its origin in the earliest Roman listing of martyrs where these two Valentines were commemorated on February 14th. Whether there was one Valentine or two Valentines remains an open question. Neither has a clear connection with courting couples or those in love. The custom of sending love notes and gifts probably originated in the Middle Ages from the belief that February 14th marked the mating season of birds. According to folklore, birds choose their mates on Valentine’s Day. The second Sunday in February is designated as “World Marriage (Sunday) Day”. This day honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. This day salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice, and joy in daily married life. The Sacrament of Matrimony is an empowerment to husband and wife to be messengers of divine truth and love. A healthy marriage relationship leads to a healthy family. A healthy family leads to a healthy parish. A healthy parish leads to a healthy society. Healthy love relationships between husband and wife is crucially important because everything else depends on it. In sharing their love in the world as a couple, husbands and wives contribute greatly to a world desperately in need of true love. Today we therefore honor and salute all married couples at St. Patrick’s and St. Anne’s.

Lent reminds us that redemption ultimately comes only from the one cross. It is a time of penance and conversion. Conversion is not an emotion, or just a feeling of forgiveness. It is the call to take a second look at our lives with the hope of amendment. During this season, among the many things we are called to be is bringing the life of grace to others by giving expression to the light and love that is within us. We are urged to undertake and live lives characterized by reflection on the message of Jesus. ‘Lent’ is a word derived from an old Anglo-Saxon expression, ‘lencten’, which means ‘spring’. Lent is a time for drifters and wanderers to come home. I take it we all fit into that category, one way or another. “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning” (Joel 2:12) is a cry we heard in the first reading on Ash Wednesday. It is a cry from God’s own heart, inviting us to turn around, to get back on track; it is a cry from the heart of God to our own hearts. Lent is a retreat of 40 days with God, being renewed by private and communal prayer, along with acts of love-saturated secret service. We are to examine our baptismal promises and enter into the mystery of the dying and rising of Jesus in us. Whatever penitential practices we choose to embrace (public or private) should lead us to a life of virtue not just for 40 days, but every day. Let whatever we do point to a deeper reality (internally) - God looks at the heart not mere externals. Almsgiving, prayer and fasting are the foundation for us to grow in the Lord in these next weeks. St. Augustine called almsgiving and prayer the “two wings” enabling prayer to fly into heaven. These practices shouldn’t just be for our good (internal) but they should also be for the good of others (external). Lent is not just a “turning away”, it is also a “turning toward”: turning toward God, hope, and a New Jerusalem. Turning away from the false gods we create for ourselves, from our false selves, and from false assurances that we are self-sufficient. One of the questions we can ask ourselves is: “Does my fasting benefit someone else?” Lent is not a sad time, it is a time for silence to sharpen our consciousness and learn to depend on God and be courageous to honestly confront what keeps us from following Christ more fully and loving him in others. During Lent, the Sacrament of baptism is not ordinarily celebrated. The Second Vatican Council states, “The Lenten Season has a twofold character: 1. It recalls baptism or prepares for it; 2. It stresses a penitential spirit. By these means especially, Lent readies the faithful for celebrating the paschal mystery after a period of closer attention to the Word of God, and more ardent prayer.” This is the rationale for not celebrating baptism during Lent. The starkness of the church décor is an invitation for us to empty ourselves of sin and falsehood as a way to prepare for the Eater mysteries. The statues are draped with purple cloth, a symbol of penance, so to create our own images of the sacred these 40 days. Lenten literature for your reflection is available at the church entrances on the tables. May you have a Graced Filled Lent!

Something to think about It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride’s father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (a honey beer) he could drink. Because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the “honey month” or what we know today as the “honeymoon.” All you prospective fathers-in-law out there, get your mead ready!!!

God bless you, your families and all your loved ones. Fr. Masabakhwa, R.
