Tips for Improving Comprehension When Reading DigitallyIn a presentation from St. Cloud State University the Academic Support Team put together suggestions for helping students with reading online and strategies to support digital reading. When it comes to reading from a computer screen:

● Prevent eye strain - zoom in or use the full screen mode

● 20/20 - Adjust your computer to 20 inches from the eyes and take a break every 20 minutes

● Reduce distractions by working with “clean” text

○ Use tools like Readability or printfriendly to turn web pages into “clean” view

● Calculate Readability for your level http://goo.gl/9sPG

● Encourage students to use reading strategies:

○ use tools like Google Docs, Evernote, Word, or OneNote

○ add headings○ highlight○ add notes○ make mind maps○ outline

These Graphic Novels went missing from the library at the end of last year...If you see them or know who might have them, the library would like to have them back for check out to other students. Also, In your mailbox are overdue notices for books out from the library as of the end of May. Some of the notices are from the student’s home school. Please return them to the library as soon as possible.

Edmodo - Free Digital Citizenship Poster Even if you don’t necessarily use Edmodo, this free poster has some practical

10 Tech Skills Every Student Should Have From the Educational Technology Guy’s Blog (David Andrade) you can read the post where he curates the skills needed based on several articles on internet search, office suite skills, self learning, typing skills, social media, netiquette, safety, basic troubleshooting, backing up data, and finding software/apps. Each topic includes resources to get more information. While this is not a new blog post it is a nice frame of reference when thinking about what it is we want students to know and be able to do with technology.

St Louis County Library Card Campaign!

The St. Louis County Library is

currently running a library card

campaign. This year SLCL has

implemented an online

registration module to streamline

the process. They encourage

schools to direct students and

staff that do not already have a

SLC Library card to http:

card application. The staff will

create library cards for those

students and staff and deliver the

library cards to your school to be

distributed.

Google Classroom At the end of last week, Google released a new tool for districts using Google Apps for Education called Google Classroom. Google Classroom is basically a document management tool that allows you to create classes for your students to join and gives you the opportunity to assign documents to students all at once without having to use elaborate scripts and add-ons. A folder structure will be created in both you and your student's Drive accounts for quick access to documents. Additionally, students will be able to submit documents to you to be graded and returned to them all digitally and through Drive. Finally, Google Classroom will allow you to email all of your students with their Parkway Google accounts directly from Classroom eliminating the need to make elaborate lists. This tool is available to you immediately and can be accessed at http://classroom.google.com where you will sign in with your Parkway Google account. Be sure to signify that your role is that of a teacher to get you started in the right way. Once you are in you will go into queue to be given the permissions of a teacher (that should take about 24 hours). You'll be able to get in, you just won't be able to create a class until permissions are granted. You should receive an email confirmation that you've been added to the Classroom Teachers group. When students go in, they will be prompted to login to their Parkway Google account and then they will have to choose student. This is where the teacher verification comes in and why it takes a day to verify you. There will be more specific how-to information coming soon.
