Seminarian Gordon Mott earns state Religious of the Year award

Seminarian Gordon Mott, whom our Council sponsors, was awarded Religious of the Year at the recent K of C State Convention. While assigned to Our Lady Miraculous Medal Parish in Southeast Columbus last summer, Gordon worked with a parishioner and

fellow Brother Knight from the local Miraculous Medal Council 11188 to help fix a non-functioning air conditioning system at the church. His work included hours of self-study of chilled-water air conditioning and pneumatic control systems on YouTube, as well as dealing with a problem existing vendor and transitioning to a new vendor. He also worked with needy families in the surrounding community.

Stewardship of the Body  Our physical bodies can challenge us. We might have aches and pains, be dealing with disease, or just not able to move our joints very well due to past injuries.

We are made in the image and likeness of God, and as temples of the Holy Spirit, it is good stewardship to maintain a healthy and balanced approach to caring for our physical bodies. Praying, exercising, eating healthy (most of the time), getting enough sleep, managing stress, socializing and balancing work and play can help us to be the best version of ourselves in order to serve God and our neighbor well. Do we see the honor and dignity in maintaining our health and vitality? Are we physically able to be God’s hands and feet in the world? Do we encourage our loved ones to address medical issues, but ignore our own? St. John Paul II calls the body the ‘masterpiece of God’s creation.’ Caring for the body can truly be a holy action that allows us to run the race for Christ. Blessings, Lori

A Communion Prayer Back in the fourth grade, "Miss Milligan" broke the hearts of every little boy in our class when she announced that she would "be away for a few weeks" and that when she returned, her name would be "Mrs. Ryan." You

see, we thought that one day when we grew up, WE would marry the pretty teacher! But the thing I will always remember about Miss Milligan was the simple prayer she taught us to say before and after receiving Holy Communion. To this day, some 65 years later, I still recite it, not only before and after Communion, but also when going to bed or waking up... we never know how lasting are the things we teach our children and grandchildren, do we? I invite you to print it, clip it out, and teach it to your young ones... Oh, my God, I believe in Thee; do Thou strengthen my faith;

All my hopes are in Thee; do Thou secure them;

I love Thee with all my heart and soul;

teach me to love Thee daily more and more;

I am sorry for having offended Thee; do Thou increase my sorrow.

Love and Blessings to you and yours, Deacon Tony

Reflections on my trip to the Dominican Republic By Megan Will

On May 20th, 2017, I embarked on a one week journey to the DR (Dominican Republic). I knew that this trip would have a significant impact on me, but I didn’t realize just how big of one it would be. When someone says “the Dominican Republic,” pictures of Punta Cana, white sandy beaches, and tourist attractions come to mind. So when I stepped off of the plane and encountered shacks made out of cinder block, tin, and scrap metal/wood, I experienced extreme culture shock to say the least. I had no idea just what kind of conditions the people of the Dominican were living in. The biggest difference between the DR (Dominican Republic) and the United States is that the water is not safe. Anywhere. Never in my life have I ever had to worry about having clean water to

carry with me through my day and worrying about budgeting it until I got back to a clean source. Even the Dominicans do not drink the water due to an amoeba and other parasites that dwell in it. Everyone must buy purified drinking water, but not everyone has the money to do so, especially in the more rural parts of the country. Many people just take a chance drinking the water because they cannot afford to buy clean water. The day that I went to the rural clinic site in the mountains was absolutely incredible. We were very lucky to set up our mobile clinic in a school that had more than one room and concrete floors (as opposed to dirt and

one small room). Our clinics comprised of three stations. The first station is where the patients file in and have their blood pressure and heart rate taken and recorded on their slip of paper. Nursing students team up with translators to ask the patient their chief complaints and record this as well for the doctor. The patients then take their papers to the next room where the two Dominican doctors each have their own teacher’s desk and the patients wait in the same room in student See Dominican Republic, Page 6

Dominican Republic, From Page 5 desks, waiting to be seen. The doctors speak with them in front of everyone. With such limited space, we can’t afford to include all the privacies that HIPAA ensures in the United States. The doctor then speaks with them about their vitals and complaints and prescribes them a one month supply of a prescription from our pharmacy. The patient then takes the slip with those prescriptions to our pharmacy area and waits for it to be filled by students and checked by RNs and then given to them by Dominican translators along with “goodie bags” of supplies for their families like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, etc. The most common complaints of our patients in this mountain village were body aches from farming, parasites in the belly from the water, and just the lack of proper nutrition/the need for vitamins. As a naive, bright eyed, newcomer, I had all of these heroic ideas of seeing

extreme medical conditions and swooping in and saving the day. I didn’t expect all of these “little” problems of just giving tylenol and vitamins. When I expressed the fact that it seemed like all we were doing was giving out tylenol to these patients, my instructor said something to me that changed my whole perspective, “Imagine having a migraine and being unable to go to a medicine cabinet to grab something for it, or having body aches from work or old age and having to just live with it. These people don’t have medicine cabinets or money to afford these products.” That’s when it started to hit home just how spoiled we Americans were. I personally took for granted that I had access to over the counter pain relievers or even medicine in general. I took for granted the fact that when I turn on the faucet at home that for one, there is even water, and two, that it is clean. I can remember my mom harping on me as a

kid to turn the water off when I was brushing my teeth and not everyone had clean water like me. didn’t really care or could even possibly relate to such a drastic difference until experiencing it first hand. And I most definitely took for granted the plethora of doctors and hospitals to choose from in my vicinity. Many people here have to walk for days to get to a hospital, and when they get there, they must take a number and wait. Sometimes for days. Sadly, many die waiting to be seen. In fact, our mobile clinic is the only medical attention some of these people receive during the course of the year, and our permanent clinic in San Juan, is the most skilled facility within a three hour radius of the capital, Santo Domingo. I couldn’t help but to feel guilty about being grumpy about my 45 minute wait at the doctor’s office the week before. My favorite thing about the entire trip was just interacting with the

people. The people are amazing. They are so thankful, kind, and giving. When our hosts at the Solid Rock guest house were talking about our service, they said they asked the people to define poverty, and you know what they said, “No one cares about us.” Not the lack of money or things. The lack of caring. This rocked me to my core, and I found this to be true. Everywhere I went, eyes were on me. All my patients wanted was to be acknowledged on a human level, and when you just made eye contact and smiled at a random patient, their whole face lit up and they were just happy that I was there and cared. All of the patients I met just had the kindest hearts. Many Dominican doctors and nurses approached us and thanked us for “taking care of my people.”

My second favorite thing was the simplicity of everything. I always thought I was a simple person and that I didn’t need much to be happy, but I realized within 10 sec of stepping off of the plane that I was wrong. As Americans we are raised to be thing-people even if we realize it or not. In the DR, it’s all about having what you need and being happy with it. They don’t measure happiness based on large houses or nice cars, but by family, friends, and God. It was a lovely, refreshing take on life. I basically had reverse culture shock coming back to the States! See Dominican Republic, Page 7

Page 6

Page 7: Fr. Edward Fitzgerald Council No. 12772; 670 West Main ... · Checks: $500 to State and $200 to Ohio Fraternal. Financial Secretary`s Report Bills reported: $225 to GK Carl Haaser

Dominican Republic, From Page 6 In short, I cannot wait to return to the DR! The work that Solid Rock does there is amazing. I love that Solid Rock teams up with the locals to educate the people and work with them to improve their lives instead of just giving handouts. I participated in a Spanish Catholic mass on Sunday, educating a class of nursing students on Monday, observing/assisting with surgery in our permanent clinic on Tuesday (an OBGYN team from NC came down and teamed with us), the mobile clinic Wednesday, and construction of a new clinic Thursday. To the Knights of K of C Council 12772, thank you all so much for your support and donation. Thanks to your help, I was better able to do God’s work in a 3rd world country! I encourage all of you to approach me with any questions or if any of you would like to talk about my experiences due to the fact that I don’t have enough room to include all of them. Thanks again so much and God bless you all!
