After adjusting for one fewer selling day, the June sales rate rose 13 percent. e seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) reached nearly 16 million for the first time since November 2007. e SAAR has been more than 15 million for seven of the last eight months. ONCE AGAIN, INDUSTRY GROWTH PRIMARILY WAS DRIVEN BY STRONG SALES OF FULL-SIZE TRUCKS AND COMPACT CROSSOVERS, WHICH WERE UP 23.6 PERCENT AND 19.7 PERCENT, RESPECTIVELY. • New-carsalesgrew9percentyear-over-yearinJune2013,despiteonefewersellingdayforthemonth.Afteradjustingforonefewersellingday,theJunesalesraterose13percent.

• Theseasonallyadjustedannualrate(SAAR)reachednearly16millionforthefirsttimesinceNovember2007.TheSAARhasbeenmorethan15millionforsevenofthelasteightmonths.

Once again, industry grOwth primarily was driven by strOng sales Of full-size trucks and cOmpact crOssOvers, which were up 23.6 percent and 19.7 percent, respectively. cOmpact cars, the secOnd largest segment Of the industry, alsO saw sOlid gains Of mOre than 15 percent.

• Monthlysalesofnewfull-sizepickuptrucksinJune2013rose23.6percenthigherthaninJune2012,andreachedtheirhighestlevelsince2007.Month-over-month,volumefellby3.2percentinJune2013,comparedtoa2.8percentmonth-over-monthdropinJune2012.

“Higherfull-sizepickuptrucksalesaredueinparttosimilaryear-over-yearincreasesinnationalconstructionspending.ThetotalvalueofconstructionputinplaceinMay2013was0.5percenthigherthanApril2013,and5.4percenthigherthanMay2012,”saidGutierrez.

• TheChevroletSilveradoandGMCSierrahadthelargestyear-over-yearsalesvolumeincreasesinJune2013,thankstothelaunchoftheredesigned2014modelsandcorrespondingsell-downoftheoutgoinggeneration’sinventory.

• TheChevroletAvalanche,discontinuedafterthe2013modelyear,andtheNissanTitan,whichremainslargelyunchangedsinceitslaunchin2004,weretheonlyfull-sizetruckmodelswithyear-over-yearsalesdeclines.

• InJune,thefull-sizecarsegmentsawthegreatestmonth-over-monthimprovementinsalesoutofanysegment,jumping20.4percent.ThisisdueinlargeparttostrongsalesoftheChevroletImpala,whichwasflatyear-over-year,yetrosenearly60percentmonth-over-monthfromMay.

“Thankstotheredesigned2014model,GMreportsthatretailsalesoftheImpalarose62percent,”saidGutierrez.“AverageretailtransactionpricesfortheImpalaalsoweresignificantlyhigherinJune2013at$31,490,versus$27,189inJune2012.”

• DespiteimprovedsalesinJune,throughthefirsthalfoftheyear,full-sizecarsalesremainslightlybelow2012levels.

• New-carsalesforthecompactcarsegmentreachedanimpressive209,929unitssoldinthemonthofJune,pushingsalesfigures15.1percenthigherfromayear-over-yearperspective.

• Additionally,compactcarsalesareup7.1percentwhencomparingsalesfiguresfromthefirsthalfof2013withthefirsthalfof2012.Thisslightlytrailstheoverallindustryaverageof7.5percent.

“Ifthesecondhalfof2013remainsasstrongasthefirsthalfoftheyear,thenwecanexpectnewcompactcarsalestoexceedthepre-recessionhighslastseenin2007,”saidGutierrez.

• TheFordFiestahadaterrificmonthinJunewithnew-carsalesclimbingto9,363totalunitssold,leadingthesubcompactcarsegmentforthefirsttimesinceJune2011.Onayear-over-yearbasis,theFiestawasupanastounding104percent.

• June’simpressivesalesfiguresfortheFiestaaremorethandoublethoseseenatthestartoftheyear.June’simpressivesalesfigurescanbelinkedtoattractiveincentiveoffersonthe2013Fiesta,aswellasthenewlyredesigned2014model,whichincludestheallnewhigh-performanceFiestaSTmodel.

“TheFiesta,whichhasbeenredesignedforthe2014modelyear,isthirdinmarketshareofthesubcompactsegmentsofarthisyear,trailingtheNissanVersaandChevroletSonic,”saidGutierrez.“WhiletheVersahasacommandingsalesleadatthispoint,strongsalesoftheFiestaredesigncouldallowittochallengeChevrolet’sSonicfortheNo.2spot.”
