Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land,

which the Lord your God gives you. (Ex 20:12; Deut. 5:16)

+

Jesus was obedient to them. (Lk 2:51)

During the last six weeks of the fall semester, I did a

sermon series on the 10 Commandments with the

schoolchildren. As part of this, I reviewed the Catechism

on the Forth Commandment (CCC #2196-2257). Not only

are there behavior and emotional expectations upon

children toward parents, but also parents toward children.

There is a section entitled “The duties of children”, which

is followed by a section “The duties of parents.” I think

this is an important reminder. For a good and holy family

to exist requires work and intention by all parties of the

family, children and parents.

We focus on the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and

Joseph. Not only were they individually holy people, but

they worked at being a Holy Family by their lives, love,

and interacts as a family unit. None of us is the Son of

God or the Immaculately Conceived Virgin Mary, or even

the Righteous Man Joseph, but all of us are Christians

with the life and grace of God within us. May this grace

be evident, especially in the Christian home, a holy

family!

Are you doing your duty as a Christian child (CCC #2214

-2220)?

Do you respect your parents?

Are you grateful for the gift of life given you and your

parents care in raising you?

Are you docile and obedient to the just requests of your parents over you?

Do you listen to the wisdom, advice, and instruction of your parents?

If still living in your parents’ home, do you contribute to the work of the household?

If your parents are elderly, do you provide “material and moral” support to them?

Do you work to establish and maintain harmony among your siblings and extended family?

Are you doing your duty as a Christian parent (CCC #2221-2231)?

Do I actively ensure a sound education to my child(ren) including moral and spiritual?

Do I respect my child(ren) as human persons and gifts from God?

Do I create a home of tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity and service of others?

Do I instill virtues off self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery by good example?

Do I foster a concern for solidarity and communal needs?

Do I evangelize my children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ & Catechesis of the Church?

Have I provided for the physical and material needs of my child(ren)?

Have I assisted & supported my child(ren) in the discernment of their God given vocation?

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Pray for us. ~ Fr. Jeremy M. Gries
