Father Gary writes
The International Catholic Weekly, ‘The Tablet,’ has focused a great
deal on the impact of the coronavirus not only on our world but also
on the mission of the Church. “This has to be a time of metanoia, of
moral and spiritual renewal,” a recent editorial proclaimed. “There
can be no return to the world as it was before the appearance of the
virulent coronavirus that caused the disease COVID19, leaving
virtually no corner of the inhabited world untouched. There may
eventually be a vaccine; there may even be a cure. But whether
there is or not, civilization has been tested and found wanting, and
the pieces cannot be reassembled exactly as they were. Over three
quarters of a million people have lost their lives directly from COVID
19; countless more will suffer and die from the economic depression
that is bound to follow. There are profound lessons to be learnt,
some of them still only half understood.

The Catholic Church retains greater moral power than any single
government. Its promise, in the stirring words of the Second Vatican
Council’s final decree Gaudium et Spes (Joy and Hope) that ‘The
joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the people of this
age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, are the
joys and hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the followers of
Christ.’ Christians gaze upon the broken and tortured figure of a man
hung from the cross, and see divinity in him; every other broken and
tortured body is thereby sanctified. In Christ’s words, those whom the
pagan world despises the poor, the hungry, the naked, the unborn,
the elderly, the sick, the migrant, the asylum seeker are not human
detritus, mere garbage fit for the garbage can, but belong to him and
deserve the same reverence.

In the postpandemic era the Church, acknowledging its sins and its
failures, must refocus on its core message, the reason it exists: to
show the world the face of Christ. What is the point of being
Catholic? Why go to Mass? Why be part of this whole thing, which
bears such obvious marks of sin and disgrace on its own body? And
the question also presents itself in reverse: would anybody have
heard of Christ and his Gospel had the church not existed to
proclaim the message? What kind of civilization, if any, would have
existed without the insistence on the preciousness of human life, on
the equal rights and dignity of all? This is a time for conversion, for
reawakening. If the Church is to evangelize, it must first evangelize
itself. Many Catholics have never before had to question their habit
of Sunday Mass attendance. The Christ who calls them back home
is not some remote mystic, even less an unforgiving moral
policeman, but that Christ who declares the poor to be his brothers
and sisters, and who threatens with vengeance from Heaven those
who exploit them. He is the Son of God who ennobled humanity by
becoming part of it, even sharing to the full its most gruesome
injustices. The Catholic ideas of solidarity, offer a chartered course
towards the renewal of faith in the common good.”

Important Reminder for Parents with School Age Children
Diocesan policy requires that children who do not attend Catholic
school must be enrolled in the parish religious education program
in order to prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First
Holy Communion and Confirmation. Students must complete the
full year in religious education immediately proceeding the school
year when they will prepare for a sacrament. For instance, if your
child is in the 8th grade, they must be in religious education all
year in order to be eligible to celebrate Confirmation when they
are in 9th grade.

ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Thank you to all parishioners for your outpouring of
love and prayers for our parish during these difficult
times. Thank you to those who have responded so
generously to the call to continue the mission of the
parish by giving electronically and/or sending in your
envelopes. We appreciate you and are praying for you!

Stop and Think
Some of us come to Mass and try not to get involved. We
hang back for many reasons: fear we will be pressured
into longterm commitments, or we will be asked to do
what we have no aptitude for. Reluctant volunteers may
be generous in other ways, through the weekly collection
or donations to good causes. Are you hesitant to
volunteer? What are your Godgiven abilities? Are you a
leader, a team player, or a behindthescenes worker?
Are you sick, homebound, or a frequent traveler? You
can pray more. There is something only you can do for
your parish! Are you a ministry leader? Do you
communicate to parishioners the value of what you do?
Are you welcoming and appreciative to new people? If
you are a volunteer, do you share your enthusiasm with
other parishioners and invite them to join you? Our parish
survives if only a few are committed, but it thrives if
everyone is included.

Living Stewardship Now
Have you committed your abilities, your time, and your
financial resources to your parish for God and the
Church? Is your involvement a true reflection of your
gratitude to God? Do you need to give more, or give
differently?

Bible Study for Women
Thursdays, 78:30pm in the Conmy Center
Ladies, Do you want to dive into God's word, but are hesitant
because you don't know where to start? Start here with us. God
meets each one of us where we are and takes us to a better place
spiritually, regardless of where we begin. No previous experience
is necessary. We are so excited about this Bible Study, Touching
the Divine. We are hosting both facetoface small groups in the
Conmy Center and a virtual group meeting online. This20week
study focuses on the many qualities of Jesus revealed through the
Gospel of John. We begin this week with a “Meet & Greet” session
and a video. If you can join us or are thinking of joining us, it is
important for you to RSVP to one of the contacts listed below as
soon as possible to ensure that we can accommodate everyone
comfortably. Come on this journey with us to unpack the riches of
the Gospel of John, and come to know Jesus more fully as we
reflect on His life and personality. Knowing Christ more intimately,
as John did, will touch your heart and fill you with hope!

you be one of them! Through presentations by
leading Catholic speakers we will witness our
most precious treasure, meet our spiritual

We Are Changing Lives
Through Christ
Students from Our Lady of the Assumption
Catholic School in Charlotte, NC were able to
watch and celebrate Thursday’s Mass with our
school children via live stream. Their parish is
not open for Masses at this time and they do
not have the capability to live stream. We
were told they enjoyed the Mass immensely
and sang along to all the songs!
