Overview The Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) client allows you to connect your computer to the UCT

internal whilst being off campus. Once connected the VPN session allows you to remotely access

resources that are normally only available on campus. If you experience any problems installing the

VPN client please log a call by emailing [email protected] .

Installing the VPN Client

1) Visit https://www.commerce.uct.ac.za/RemoteLabaccess and log into the website.

2) Once logged in, download the Cisco Apple MAC OS VPN Client from the link on the site. Save

the file do your download’s folder.

3) Once the download’s has completed, double click on the .dmg file.

4) Should now see a new drive appearing on your desktop named Cisco AnyConnect. Double

click the drive and the double click the Cisco AnyConnect vpn.pkg file. You will be presented

with the installation wizard. Follow the wizard through (as indicated below.) When

prompted for your password, enter the password that you use to log onto you MacBook or

Macintosh machine.

5) Once the installation has completed, from finder or the applications screen, type in the

keyword Cisco and click on the Cisco AnyConnect program.

6) Once the AnyConnect program has been started you will be presented with a VPN address

box. Enter the following address vpn.uct.ac.za and click connect. You will then be asked log

in with a username and password. Enter your staff /student number and your UCT network

password. If you have forgotten your UCT network password, please visit

https://password.uct.ac.za to perform a password reset.

7) Once you have authenticated, click accept on the connection dialog box.

7.) A small Cisco icon with a lock will appear in the MAC system tray and application dock, indicating

that you are connected to the UCT VPN. To disconnect from the UCT VPN, simply right click the Cisco

icon and click disconnect.
