KEENELAND JANUARY CONCLUDES Keenelandrealized a gross of $70,446,000 as the seven-day Janu-ary Horses of All Ages Sale concluded yesterday inLexington. AWe are very pleased with the results, giventhe variability of January sales,@ said Keeneland=s Direc-tor of Sales, Geoffrey Russell. AThe sale unfolded asanticipated; buyers were very discriminating in theirpurchases in a continuation of what we saw in Novem-ber.@ The sale=s highest price was achieved at last Mon-day=s opening session, when Southern Equine signed a$2.7-million ticket for Irish Cherry (Irish Open), in foalto Ghostzapper and the dam of Grade I winners Daaherand Spun Sugar. The 14-year-old mare was one of fourofferings to break the seven-figure barrier.

By the Numbers... Last year=s January Sale was held over eight ses-sions, and Russell pointed out major increases in theoverall number of sale days offered by the auctioncompany. Keeneland conducted 27 days of selling in2002, versus 39 in 2007; the September Yearling cata-logue has increased by 1,200 in the last five years, andRussell echoed widespread industry concerns of over-production. AOur sales have expanded dramatically overthe past five years, yet the size of the North Americanfoal crop (37,900 in 2001 versus 37,300 in 2006) hasremained virtually the same,@ he said. AThat showsthere are too many non-commercial horses being of-fered. We get questions about the number of days andnumber of horses we now catalog, but as Keeneland isthe marketing arm of the industry, it is our role to cata-log what we are offered. We raise the issue of overpro-duction out of concern for the long-term profitability ofour commercial breeder clients.@ In 2007, Keeneland=sfour sales (January, April, September and November)realized a record cumulative gross of more than $814million, with buyers representing nearly all 50 statesand 45 countries, up from 42 the previous year. How-ever, Russell cautioned that success was attributable tothe global economy rather than market strength. AMakeno mistake; record sales last year were built on theweakness of the U.S. dollar, which drove foreign spend-ing,@ he explained.
