GI Breeders= Cup Mile upsetter Furthest Land (SmartStrike) drew two inside of Richard=s Kid, in post eight.Jim Cornes, representing owners Ken and SarahRamsey, said, AThe horse has settled down well sincehe arrived from America, and it will be great to thinkthat it could give Ken and Sarah a second World Cupafter Roses in May in 2005.@ Team Valor International=s Gitano Hernando (GB)(Hernando) himself sprang a big upset when takingdown last fall=s GI Goodwood Breeders' Cup S. at SantaAnita at 18-1 odds. Connections opted to skip theBreeders= Cup, and he returned with a facile win in theWinter Derby Trial S. at Lingfield in February. TeamValor=s Barry Irwin said of the four-year-old=s post posi-tion two, A[Jockey] Keiren Fallon will be relieved thatwe have stall two, and this horse is getting better as hegets older.@ Trainer Marco Botti was also happy withthe assignment, adding, AFrom there Keiren should beable to have him mid-field or slightly better, and there ispace in the race which will suit him.@ European hopeful Crowded House (GB) (RainbowQuest), runner-up in his two local preps in the G3 AlRashidiya Feb. 4 and G3 Maktoum Challenge Round 2Feb. 18, goes from post nine. AIt is an ok draw, be-cause they will go a fast pace and I=m happy with that,@said trainer Brian Meehan. AHe needed his two prepraces, which have blown the cobwebs away.@ To the chagrin of racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe,Juddmonte didn=t get the luck of the draw with any ofits starters. Spanish Moon (El Prado (Ire) has post 13 inthe G1 Sheema Classic, Confront (GB) (Nayef) post 12in the G1 Duty Free, and in the World Cup, GI Breeders=Cup third Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) drew 11. AIt=sdisappointing, as they all need to be handy,@ saidGrimthorpe, who added of Twice Over, AHe ran ablinder at the Breeders= Cup. The idea of taking him toCalifornia was to find out if he acted on a syntheticsurface, as this race has always been in the back of ourminds.@

Japan’s Shaheen Hopeful Blows Out... Japanese sprinter Laurel Guerreiro (Jpn) (King Halo{Jpn}) worked 1200 meters over the Tapeta, clocking:23.78 for the final quarter mile beneath trainer MitsuguKon. AHe lost a bit of weight after the travel from Ja-pan, but it is his second time abroad, and he has recov-ered quickly since he arrived,@ Kon commented. AWewill put blinkers on him for the first time in the race, soI wanted to see him with blinkers on this morning, andit really helped his concentration. He also schooled inthe starting gate, but he was settled and not at alltense. As for the track, it will be his first start on anall-weather surface, but he has already experienced adirt track last time out [seventh in the one-mile G1February S. Feb. 21], so I=m not concerned about this.@As far as his post position for the Shaheen, Kon added,AI am very happy with the draw [post four], whichmakes me hopeful that he can set the pace, which ishis winning style.@ Laurel Guerreiro=s marquee win camein the 2009 G1 Sprinters= S. at Nakayama.

Mendip Aims to Give Godolphin Seven in Derby... Godolphin has owned the G2 UAE Derby since itsinception, winning the main-track event--run this yearfor the first time over 1900 meters, or roughly 1 3/16th

miles--a record six times.Sheikh Mohammed=sflagship has four chancesto add a seventh renewalSaturday, with theKentucky-bred Mendip(Harlan=s Holiday) themain hope. AMendip isstill immature mentallyand relatively inexperi-enced, though he is po-tentially very nice,@ saidSimon Crisford,Godolphin=s racing man-ager. AThe door is still

open for the GI Kentucky Derby should he comethrough this test. But he is still learning, and we will getSaturday out of the way before even contemplatingChurchill Downs.@ Jockey Frankie Dettori, who had hischoice of the Godolphin runners before choosingMendip, added, AHe has done nothing wrong and couldbe anything, but he is a bit hot with a wild eye, andwe=ll have to see how he takes this jump in class.@ A$375,000 FTFFEB juvenile purchase by John Ferguson,Mendip is a perfect three-for-three. He won at firstasking going a mile at Kempton last fall, returned totake a Meydan allowance Feb. 11 and, in his mostrecent, aired by 6 1/4 lengths in the Al Bastakiya S.Mar. 4.

All Not Smooth for All Silent... Australian raider All Silent (Aus) (Belong to Me) gal-loped on Meydan=s all-weather yesterday, rather thanan intended spin over the lawn, after a misunderstand-ing. The veteran is preparing for the 1200-meter AlQuoz Sprint on the grass. Trainer Grahame Begg, whohad set up shop near the finish line, could hardly be-lieve his eyes when the horse appeared around thehome turn on the Tapeta, rather than on the grasscourse. AThat was the whole point of the exercise, tolet him get the feel of the course proper under gallopingconditions,@ Begg said. As it turned out, an official haddirected experienced track rider Sean Murphy onto themain track rather than the turf, having misinterpretedan instruction from another official. AThere is nothingwe can do about it now,@ said Begg. AI might try and lethim have a canter on the course proper on Friday@ De-spite the mix-up, Ryan said he was happy with the wayAll Silent, a notoriously poor track galloper, hadworked.

BILL TO REOPEN AQUEDUCT VLT BIDDINGINTRODUCED New York State Senator MartyGolden, a Republican representing Brooklyn, yesterdayintroduced a bill that would reopen the bidding for aVLT operator for Aqueduct, and also significantly

change the selection process. Thelegislation outlines a schedule thatwould take approximately 65 days tocomplete. In response to the contro-versy that surrounded the decision toappoint Aqueduct EntertainmentGroup as the VLT operator, a dealthat ultimately fell through, Sen.Golden=s bill would be designed tomake the procedure more transpar-ent. AThe selection of AEG to run theVLTs at Aqueduct was made behindclosed doors after a secretive, politi-

cally influenced process with no public input or reviewof the submitted proposals,@ said Sen. Golden in a pressrelease. AThis is the latest in a series of missteps thathave delayed the installation of VLTs at Aqueduct andcost New York State hundreds of millions of dollars inlost revenue. My legislation will put an efficient, trans-parent process in place so we can ensure the bestvendor is chosen as soon as possible.@ Under the newlegislation, the State Comptroller would recommend amajor accounting firm to review the bids. In addition, there would be a third-party reviewer, chosen by theGovernor, the Speaker of the Assembly and the Tempo-rary President of the Senate, to oversee the accountingfirm and submit a final recommendation. This would befollowed by a public hearing on the matter, and theannouncement of the selection would be made within15 days of the public hearing. ANew York is in a fiscalcrisis, and each day we delay the implementation ofVLTs at Aqueduct, we are losing millions of dollars inpotential revenue,@ Sen. Golden continued. AThis pro-cess has taken far too long--it=s clear we need an expe-dited, fair and open process to get the best vendor inplace as soon as possible. Resolving this issue will bringin revenues to help us close the massive budget deficit, and create hundreds of much-needed jobs for New YorkCity residents.@
