Trappe Shot to Race Next at Spa... Mill House=s J “TDN Rising Star” JTrappe Shot(Tapit), an outstanding second to Lookin at Lucky(Smart Strike) in last weekend=s GI Haskell S. will makehis next start at Saratoga Aug. 28 in either the GI Travers S. over a mile and a quarter or the GI King=sBishop S. going seven panels. AI was very happy withhis race against Lookin at Lucky, who was the cham-pion two-year-old colt and probably will be the cham-pion three-year-old colt,@ said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.ANow we have a choice between facing Discreetly Mine(Mineshaft) in the King=s Bishop, or running 1 1/4miles.@ He continued, AIt=s a jump ball--both are Grade 1races and very important races as a stallion. Fortunatelywe are in a position to be able to make that kind ofchoice, and we don=t have to make it right away.@Horses that have raced in the Haskell have done well inboth Grade I events. Coronado=s Quest (1997), PointGiven (2001) and Summer Bird (2009) used the Haskellas a steppingstone to Travers success, while horses likeTale of the Cat (1997), Forestry (1999), More ThanReady (2000) and Hard Spun (2007) successfully cutback in distance to take the King=s Bishop.

Stotsfold Dies... Walter Swinburn's stable was in mourning yesterdayafter its star performer Stotsfold (GB) (Barathea {Ire}--Eliza Acton {GB}, by Shirley Heights {GB}) died follow-ing a colic attack Tuesday night. Third in last year=s GIArlington Million, the gelded seven-year-old won his lasttwo starts in Sandown=s G3 Brigadier Gerard S. in Mayand Listed Gala S. last month, and was being preparedfor another trip to Chicago. In recovery after his initialbout of colic, the P W Harris homebred suffered a re-lapse and died after being taken to the NewmarketEquine Hospital. AIn the midst of a really good year forthe stable, we were dealt a hammer blow this morningwith the news that Stotsfold had died on the operatingtable during the night,@ Swinburn explained on hiswebsite. AAlmost three weeks after his career-besteffort in winning the Gala S. at Sandown, he was foundto be suffering with colic and following several days ofintense treatment and observation, he seemed to beover it. Sadly, the problem recurred late last night andhe was immediately taken to the Newmarket EquineHospital, but they were unable to save him. Thehomebred seven-year-old will be greatly missed aroundthe yard, but the memories will definitely linger long.@ Intotal, Stotsfold won nine of 30 starts and nearly,340,000 in prize money, with Longchamp=s G3 LaCoupe last year, Windsor=s G3 Winter Hill S. in 2008and Goodwood=s G3 Select S. three years ago amonghis other successes.

SOME POSITIVES One of the real positives is: there are still peopleprepared to spend $300,000 or more on a yearling. There were 46 yearlings sold for $300,000 or more atSaratoga by 31 different stallions. It is very good newsfor their breeders and consignors that probably a bigmajority of the 46 actually made somebody money. Asbreeders are selling off record 2008 stud fees into thelowest demand since 1992, nobody=s expecting tomake money this year; to get the horses sold and comeout of the year with some money will be a win, be-cause at least when breeders go to sign up for their2011 stud fees, those will have really crashed too. Moreover, there are new faces, as well as some ofthe great established players. Sheikh Mohammed, ofcourse; he flew into town and bought 14 at the sale, though the >good= news is he accounted for less than20 percent of the gross. Brother Sheikh Hamdanbrought three, including a $350,000 filly from the firstcrop by his superstar Invasor. But most of the buyerswere American. Charlotte Weber=s Live Oak Studbought five; agent Donato Lanni signed for three, evi-dently all for trainer Bob Baffert (whose Lookin at Luckystamped himself America=s best three-year-old colt inlast weekend=s GI Haskell S.); veteran owners Robertand Lawana Low bought a couple, including ahigh-priced Distorted Humor filly; and a number ofnewer players like Bobby Flay, Benjamin Leon=s BesiluFarm (bought the saletopping $1.2-million A.P. Indycolt through trainer Todd Pletcher), and back-in-business Ahmed Zayat were also there to buy. Thesyndicates (IEAH bought five; West Point, Dogwood, and Centennial were also buyers) and pinhookers wereactive, too. So, it=s really not as if there is no interest.Definitely, there is not enough interest; there are defi-nitely some massive problems in North America=s horseracing industry, which ultimately may or may not besorted out. But there is a measurable level of business, and to some extent, it wouldn=t be bad business, either, except for the massive production costs, via the record2008 stud fees, in this year=s yearlings.

Elsewhere in this issue we publish the TDN Insta-tistics sire tables for the first two yearling sales,Fasig-Tipton July and Saratoga. It=s quite limited data;most of these sires will have a lot more on offer nextmonth, but it is nonetheless informative to look atwhere the stallions rate after the first two sales. Thetop four stallions on average actually had just 60 per-cent of their yearlings sold among them (14 of 23) ofthose offered in the first two sales, reinforcing the viewthat it doesn=t matter how high up the scale you go,there=s no forgiveness any more: it had better be agood one of whatever it=s by, or there=s nobody there tobuy it, certainly for not what the breeder might have init. The top five spots by sire average for these first twosales were filled by sires with WinStar, Lane=s End, andDarley connections: WinStar=s Distorted Humor (two, averaged $762,500) edged out Lane=s End=s A.P. Indy(three, averaged $705,000) for the top spot so far, ahead of Darley=s Street Cry (five, averaged $570,000).Lane=s End=s two-time leading sire Smart Strike had fouraverage $462,500; and WinStar=s Tiznow ranked fifth, with four averaging $352,500. I thought it was alsointeresting that two sons of A.P. Indy, Bernardini(three, averaged $275,000) and Pulpit (six, averaged$260,000) ranked among the top 10. With MalibuMoon (nine averaged $169,444), Pulpit=s son Tapit(four, averaged $105,250, off a $12,500 stud fee),and--hey, have you heard the news?--Mineshaft (two, averaged $152,500), A.P. Indy continues to rank asNorth America=s single most powerful sire line (exclud-ing Mr. Prospector, which got going 20 years earlier). After their $200-million 2007 stallion prospect spend-ing spree, this year=s first-crop yearling sire statisticsare certain to be dominated by Darley=s really impres-sive collection of new recruits, on both sides of theAtlantic. Four Kentucky stallions had eight or more sellin the first two sales and averaged over $100,000:Darley stallions Street Sense (eight, averaged$220,625), Hard Spun (nine, averaged $178,888), andDiscreet Cat (eight, averaged $125,625); andGainesway=s Corinthian (13, averaged $128,461). In anenvironment where >clearance rate= is a very importantstatistic to breeders, Street Sense and Discreet Cathave each had 80 percent sold of those offered (eightof 10), Corinthian was 65 percent (13 of 20), and HardSpun, harder work, just 53 percent (nine of 17).

“The Saratoga sale makes more sense if you take out the2009 spike in number catalogued and sold, and the bigjump in gross in the Dubai company’s first year ofownership. The other three years in the table and graph –2007, 2008, and 2010 – actually show numbers whichcompare (favorably) to the rest of the yearling market.Compared to the peak year of 2007, the number cataloguedwas down just six percent; the number sold, though, by 18percent; the gross by 21 percent; and the average by justfour percent. It’s worth noting that 46 of the 117 soldbrought $300,000-plus.” - Bill Oppenheim

Fasig=s first two yearling sales combined saw 360yearlings sold for $50,829,500 (see Weekly SalesTicker, bottom table), an average of $141,493. Whenyou think of the 50-percent drop in value for manyAmerican horses, especially of the breeding stock vari-ety, you=d say to some extent Fasig=s two select saleshave held up not too badly: the number of horses cata-logued in the two sales dropped by 23 percent (796 to609) between 2007 and 2010. The number of horsessold dropped 27 percent, from 496 to 360, while the>clearance rate= from the catalogue dipped from 62 to59 percent--meaning 59 percent of those cataloguedwere listed as sold in 2010, versus 62 percent in 2007.The two sales= combined gross dropped by a little overa third--34 percent--from $77.5 million in 2007 to$50.8 million this year. The average has only droppedby 10 percent, but when a quarter fewer horses sell fora third less money, the fact that the average is only offby 10 percent provides only limited consolation--partic-ularly when production costs, in terms of stud fees, probably rose by a third between 2005, when 2007yearlings were created, and 2008, which stud feesresulted in this year=s yearlings. So it will be a testing yearling season, no doubt ev-erywhere, as there is limited discretionary capital andnot much if any credit available (at least from banks) tobuy horses. But there is the promise, for those whoweather the storm, that this year will be the worst, atleast because stud fees have now fallen to the levelwhere the current market can more or less justify them.In other words, if you breed horses on what are goingto be 2011 stud fees, if the yearling market just re-mains where it is, breeders will have a reasonablechance to make money, albeit at significantly lowerlevels than was the case three years ago. If you cansurvive this year, at least your stud fee expenses nextyear shouldn=t be exorbitant in comparison to what theyearling you would breed might bring.

She came up a half-length short of SimplySplendid (Maria=s Mon) in the GII Nassau S. at Wood-bine June 5, and was returning to the U.S. as the pub-lic=s second choice. Well back early, she angled towardthe center of the track under Javier Castellano andclosed like a shot to get up and secure her first black-type win. Favored Keertana had run coming into thelane, but was stymied behind traffic before finally get-ting clear to be second. AThat was an impressive turn offoot,@ said Three Chimneys Racing=s Robert Clay. AShehas been close, but this is perhaps her best race. Wewere trying to find a mile race. Obviously, Roger[Attfield] has been having good luck here.@ Attfield, who won last week=s GII Lake George S. with invaderPerfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), fitted Miss Keller withprotective eye cups. AIn her last race, she got a littlekick back in her eye,@ explained Joe Miller, assistantracing manager for Three Chimneys Racing. AShe got aclump of grass in her eye. It's possibly the reason shedidn't win that Grade II race in Canada. She had a littlebit of a cut on her eye. Roger usually comes out withsome interesting head gear. He always has somethingnew. He's innovative. That was Roger being an incredi-bly good trainer. Roger thinks outside the box. That'swhy he has the horses. Case of Potomac Horse Fever Did Not Originate atKeeneland (from edited press release) Kentucky Department of Agriculture officials haveconcluded a recent case of Potomac Horse Fever--diag-nosed in a horse at Keeneland=s training center on RiceRoad--was not contracted or introduced to the horsewhile he was stabled on the grounds. State veterinary officials were alerted on Friday whena horse that had been stabled at the facility testedpositive for the disease, said Rusty Ford, equine pro-grams manager in the Office of State Veterinarian Rob-ert Stout. AOur investigation found the horse developed a feverin the days following his arrival at the training facilityfrom an area farm,@ Ford said. AWith the fever not easilyresolved the colt was moved to an equine hospital forveterinary care and diagnostics. In consultation with thehorse=s attending veterinarian and the internist caringfor the horse at the hospital, we are confident thatthere is no evidence that leads us to believe that thehorse contracted the disease causing agent in the lessthan five days he was at the training center.@ Cont. p6

Potomac Horse Fever is caused by a type of bacte-ria--Neoriketssia risticie--and is associated with hotweather and aquatic insects. It is a condition found inKentucky during the hot summer months. Agricultureand veterinary officials have recently noted an increasein the number of PHF cases diagnosed in several east-ern states, Ford said. Against that backdrop, equine health officials havebeen monitoring potential cases in Kentucky, althoughat this juncture there does not appear to be an in-creased occurrence rate of the disease, Ford said. Horses contract the disease after inadvertently con-suming infected insects while grazing or eating feed-stuffs. The disease is not transmitted from horse tohorse, Ford said. Symptoms associated with the dis-ease include fever, diarrhea and laminitis. Regretfully, Ford said, in this case the horse=s condi-tion failed to improve and resulted in the decision toeliminate suffering through euthanasia.
