Dane County faces many challenges ... access to affordable child care, racial and educational achievement gaps, hunger, lack of affordable housing, increasing incidence of chronic disease and senior isolation. At the Y, through partnership and our own programs, we’re making an impact on these important community issues. We believe that transformative change is possible when we work together.

Thank you to our donors, volunteers, community partners and staff who helped Build a Better Us in 2017. Forging ahead, we will strive for ways to grow; to embrace the potential of youth; to share our commitment to health and healthy living; and to expand our reach to the lesser-served corners of our community.

COMMUNITY CHALLENGE YMCA ACTION

Every day, the YMCA of Dane County addresses serious challenges faced by our community with real, difference-making actions.

In a community virtually surrounded by water, our Y taught 6,345 SWIM LESSONS, and 818 qualified for financial assistance.

DROWNING is the leading cause of death for CHILDREN 1–4 years old and the second-leading cause for 5–14 year olds.

We set educational building blocks! 101 students enrolled in PRESCHOOL and 145 in 4-YEAR OLD KINDERGARTEN.

At-risk children who do not have HIGH-QUALITY EARLY CHILDHOOD experiences are 60% LESS LIKELY to attend college.

SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE keeps kids safe and engaged while parents work. We had 1,059 kids in before and after school care with 41 receiving financial assistance.

70% OF CHILDREN under the age of six have all PARENTS IN THE WORKFORCE.

594 kids had fun- and healthy activity-filled summers and made a lifetime of memories in Y CAMP.

American children spend about THREE HOURS per day WATCHING TV. Too much screen time can raise the risk for attention problems, anxiety and depression.

In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, we connected 92 families to FOOD SECURITY resources.

HUNGER is a regular struggle for ONE IN SIX CHILDREN.

We received $369,423 in donations from individuals, families, corporate partners, public entities and foundations, leaving a gap of $79,200 between donations and need.We also donated $9,715 in memberships, programs and services to other local nonprofit organizations working to inspire change and improve lives in our community.
