ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

First of all, I would like to thank my Additional Mathematics teacher, Ms. Lim Giok Pey endlessly for providing helpful notes and guidance when I was doing this project. She had helped me to go through and check every parts of this project.

Next, I would like to thank the important persons in my life- my parents, Mr P. Rajamanickam and Mrs. S. Vellaiyammal for providing physical and mental support and assistance until I finished doing the project. They also had provided strong financial support for this project.

Next, I would like to thank my best friends for helping me throughout the days of doing this project. They had helped in finding the data for the survey and provided unquestionable support when I was doing this project.

I would also like to thank to all the parties that involved in the works of doing this project either directly or indirectly.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of doing this Additional Mathematics project is :

=to develop the skills in the field of statistics.

=to make statistical figures out of obtained data.

=to read data from statistical figures

=to develop positive attitudes.

=to determine students performance in their examination.

eINTRODUCTION

Statistics deals with collection, classification, tabulation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data. Further statistic has wide application in Biology, Psychology, Education, and mainly in Economics. In this survey, the performance of 5 SN 1 students in March Additional Mathematics test scores is being observed and presented. The school adminitration wants to compare the result with previous examination. Hence, one of the ways to present the result is by measuring the central tendency of the scores. Measures of central tendency are statistical constants which enable us to comprehend in a single effort the significance of the whole.

PART 1:

1.List the importance of data analysis in daily life.-to determine the amount of insurance cost based on the average life span of a human.-to control and plan the family monthly expenses.-to monitor the crime rate in a country.-for advertisement program( feed back on the product )-to help in planning a political campaign-help in planning in educational blueprint.

2.Specify the types of Measure of Central Tendency and of Measure of DispersionMeasure of Central Tendencyi.Mean-Ungrouped data

whereis sum of all data, N is number of data.

-Grouped data

Where x is the class mark or midpoint of the class and f is the class frequency.

ii.Median-Ungrouped data=The data that is at the middle of the data when the data arearranged in ascending order.

-Grouped data Median=L + ( )Cwhere :L=Lower boundary of median classN=Total frequencyC=Width of median classF=Cumulative frequency before median classfm=Frequency of median class

iii.Mode-Ungrouped data= The observation that has the most number of frequency.

-Grouped data=Determine by histogram

Measure of Dispersioni.Range-Ungrouped data=Largest value-Smallest value

-Grouped data=Largest class mark(midpoint)-Smallest class mark(midpoint)

ii.Interquartile range-Ungrouped data=Upper quartile-Lower quartile

-Grouped data= Upper quartile()-Lower quartile()=(L+( )C) - (L+( )C)iii.Variance-Ungrouped data= -Grouped data=

iv.Standard deviation-

a) From Table 1, find(i) the mean,= = =(ii) the modePlease refer to Graph 1(iii) the median using two methods1.Please refer to Graph 22.FormulaMedian = L + ( )C = =

b)Based on your findings from (a) above, state the appropriate measure of central tendency to reflect the performance of your class in Additional Mathematics. Explain why.An appropriate measure of central tendency would be the median as the histogram shows the distribution of the marks is skewed, rather largely skewed to the right. The median is more appropriate measure than mean or mode. The distribution being largely skewed to the right is to be expected as 5Sn 1 is the best class among the science classes. The choice of the median as the preferred measure of central tendency is for this class only. When compared to samples from other classes, the resulting data would show a symmetrical distribution and mean is the measure adopted by the statistician analyzing the data.

PART 3 :

Measure of Dispersion is a measurement to determine how far the values of data in a set of data is spread out from its average value.Based on the data from Table 1.a)using two methods, find (i) the interquartile range1.Please refer to Graph 2.2.Formula=(L+( )C) - (L+()C)= =17.7272 (ii) the standard deviation

1.Formula(ungrouped data)==13.27902.Formula(grouped data)==12.4325

b)Explain the advantages of using standard deviation compared to interquartile range to describe the data.

The usage of standard deviation is more useful as a measure of dispersion compared to interquartile range because it can give an accurate picture on the distribution of the data and at the same time, lessen the influence of the extreme value.For the interquartile range, the existence of extreme value does not effect anything because it is not taken in consideration.

PART 4 :a. If your teacher wants to make adjustments by adding 3 marks for each student in your class for their commitment and discipline shown, find the new value of mean, mode, median, class interval, interquartile range and standard deviation. Check your answers with other methods.New mean=55.090909 + 3 =58.090909New mode=New median=New class interval= Original value =New interquartile range= Original value =New standard deviation= Original value =

CheckingNew Mean = = = 58.0909New mode = New median = L + ()C = 57.5 + = 59New class interval = 31 19 + 1 = 13New interquartile range = =17.7272New standard deviation = =12.4325

b.In April 2015, a new student has enrolled in your class. The student has scored 45% in the Additional Mathematics March Test in his/her former school. If the student scores were taken into account in the analysis of your school March Test, state the effect of the presence of this student to the mean, mode, median, interquartrile range and standard deviation.Mean = Increases

Mode = Constant

Median = Decreases

Interquartile range =

REFLECTION

After finishing this project, I have learned to use the skills based on Additional Mathematics in my daily life. It not only helps me to understand the solve-able problems but also helps me to take step and precautionary measures when it is needed based on the information. When I was doing this project, I have learned a lot of applicable skills in my statistics. And I have also learned to make a precise conclusion out of the data that I obtain. It includes judging and getting the needed data from the statistical figures. Furthermore, I aiso learned the importance of co-operation and friendship in our daily life. Moreover, I realize the truth in the sentence, knowledge is a tool to make our life far more easier and differentiate us with other creatures and thus forming our civilization.

CONCLUSION

In a nutshell, this project is an initiative from the government in forming a skillful and knowledgeable society in line with our Vision 2020. A student is required to know and able to apply the knowledge in solving their daily lifes work and problem. In this project, the school administration has able to compare the Additional Mathematics March Test score of 5 SN1 s student and present this result in a better way of record. It was found that the result was not that satisfying even though some had excel. Overall, the result needs to be improved and it must start with the students themselves. They need to put effort in order to score their examination and hence get their A+ in their Additional Mathematics test. Time is gold so we need to use them well and decorate our future with bright hope. Thank you!!!!
