Hey all’,

As the leaves are turning bright yellow and vibrant red and as the days are getting colder and shorter the au-tumn seems like the perfect time to reflect and look to the future, and this is exactly what the newly elected Europe-an board did when gathering in Brussels for a three day meeting at the end of October.

On the agenda was to create a new strategy for the years to come, decide on a main focus of this board in 2011/2012 and divide the responsibility with a personal action plan for all. As you might guess from these am-bitious goals the meeting was intense, but overall the achieving alumni spirit prevailed and all results where attained.

Therefore I’m happy to share with you all the three tier JA-YE Alumni Europe strategy:

§ EMPOWERMENT – supporting national alumni net-works, while involving more alumni in European projects and focusing on securing more sustainable financing.

§ OPPORTUNITIES – developing current projects and launching new initiatives as well as encouraging more entrepreneurial connections between alumni.

§ ENLARGEMENT – growing the European network both in numbers and in countries, while also supporting the development of JA-YE Alumni on a global scale.

We are looking forward to working closely with all national alumni networks to make these new strategic goals a reality.

>Third time’s a charmDear reader,

According to the old fairytales three is a magic number and for me our third issue of the new Flying High is magic too. This issue is better than the last and the next one will hopefully be better than this one. But that’s not entirely why it’s magic.

Because, you see, the magic happens in the stories. The people who have taken time to contribute deserves that you kick back on one of these dull autumn Sundays and dwelve by the stories that make up this organisation.

Especially, come with Bastian to Brussels where he was a sci-preneur for 3 days or listen in on Sebastien telling us about his story being an entrepreneur.

As usual, get all the latest alumni news from around Europe. Get in the know of what has happened since last time and what is up and coming till next time.

I hope you feel the magic too. Thanks for flying with us!

>Megatrends in MunichThe Conference in Munich in September was completed with great success. Here is what some of the participants got out of beng there...

Which important relations did you make at the conference?

The most important relationship I made in München was with myself. By getting to know so many kind and different people I realized that I’m unique and that my perspective on a problem is valuable in a group.

List 3 things you learned at the conference

The engineering point of view is one of the essential tools to actually solve the momentary crisis situation that we are living in. Due to the interac-tivity between different nations with different learning habits we can achieve much more and above all find efficient solutions to our main problems. I also learned that these type of activities like the confer-ences are essential for people to, in a relaxed and eventful gathering, exchange the essential development of their organizations in their countries and to establish strong and motivating connections for future projects and make them realize that they are not the only ones with creative ideas and constructive achievments.

Carlos Henriques, Portugal

Patrik ČermákBack from a very inspiring 8th Junior Achievement - Young Enterprise Alumni Conference in Munich. I would like to say Thank you! Thank you for the lectures (think global, act local), for the discussions, especially for Mikko Jaatinen’s very important “microchanges”, for Kamil Ze-man’s idea of endless growth of economics with Rostis-lav Stoklásek’s opposition, for Elena Tosheva’s parable about helm, for the thought of entrepreneur child, ... Have a good time!

Lari RaitavuoIt’s soon time to leave back home from Germany, but the conference in Germany have been full of information which I can use in the future, thanks a lot for the Ger-man alumni club for making it possible! Cheers!

Do you feel you are better equipped to make a difference in your alumni organisation and how?

Keeping the JA-YE fire burning is important, not only on the European, but on a national level as well. The main board of a national Alumni group always has to have this on it’s mind. Hence, participating in as many European events as possible needs to be considered one of the main activities of each and every Alumni group.

Jovan Djukic, Serbia

Viktorie PetrikovaMy dear Alumni! There is so much I want to say but at the same time I can’t find the right words.. This week was more than just a conference.. It was a week full of inspiration, pas-sion, friendship, motivation and much more.. I enjoyed every single minute of my stay even though sometimes it was hard to stay focused.. So thank you Germany and I hope we will meet again next year in Portugal!!! JA-YE Alumni Europe ROCKS!!! :)

Rostislav Stoklásek‎3 hours of sleep is just not enough, but the last night of the 8th Junior Achievement - Young Enterprise Alumni Conference was awesome, thank you guys for this week, it flew by soooo fast!!! Can’t wait to see you again!!!

Roxana Mihaela StefanescuHas spent some great days at the 8th Junior Achievement - Young Enterprise Alumni Conference! A huge congratula-tion to the JENZ e.V. for such an event! Sara Belreis Tengvall FarsiHey all! Say what? My head is going on and on in English and I guess it will never stop after this awesome week in München - I’m truly blessed to have you guys in my life - Thanks to all ja-ye alumni!

Susanna Alice TarkowskiSpending the last few hours in Munich after a brilliant time at the 8th Junior Achievement - Young Enterprise Alumni Conference! Hope to see everybody again soon!

How will the conference influence any future decisions of yours?

I was inspired by many of the speeches at the conference. Especially the speakers who are/were entrepreneurs themselves convinced me again that with entrepreneurial spirit one can just achieve that much more. In the future also, I will always decide for the path that allows me to be entrepreneurial, to think differently, to have an impact on other peo-ple’s lives. And as a co-organizer of the conference I experienced once again that reaching challenging goals is simply incredibly rewarding.

Travelling togetherThe idea of the Alumni-Weekend is to interconnect the Junior-Achievement-Switzerland Alumni from different ages and working or studying environments in a more casual frame. Every year the Alumni board seeks an appropriate city to spend a weekend on and experience it together with a common (sightseeing-)programme and like this to get to know other interesting people and to exchange own experiences concerning a JA-YE project or further career steps. Our last Alumni-Weekend e.g. took place in Milano, Itlay. Previous years proofed once more that the spirit in such an easy environment is very inspiring and people get to know also more personally and a wonderful feeling of togetherness develops. Beyond that it is a very fertile ground for enterpreneurial thinking and innovative ideas.

Senior alumni meet-up What happens when you have been involved in alumni for some time, and you are getting a bit older? In Denmark you join the senior group: YEADsenior. An informal socially based network group. We have a Linkedin group where we share opportunities – and most importantly; we set up senior-dinners. Such a meet-up took place 19th November in Copenhagen. 15 seniors partici-pated and had a great evening. Furthermore, we now and then give advice to the committee and help the national JA-YE office with special tasks.

The interview starts and Sebastien pops up on the screen with a big smile. His energy is infec-tious. “You know, I was really honored when Fly-ing High thought of me for this portrait and I’m really happy if I can in any way inspire other young alumni.”

Without us having to ask any questions he starts to tell us about himself. At the age of 27 Sebast-ien is already a successful entrepreneur work-ing with a team of 12 people based in Luxemburg. “I started Real Impact with my best friend, Loïc, when we were just working as free lance consultants with an African Telecom company. After a year, we consistently found that they were doing nothing with their data and

we thought: “Wow, we could create a company focused on Business Intelligence: lots to do, no competition, great prices, this could be huge”. That was November 2010; We founded our company and started recruiting colleagues & friends to create our current dream team.”

Fast-talking Sebastien continues to tell us about Real Impact, “We specialize in analyt-ics and how to transform data into action.” The confused exclaims from us prompts a patient explana-tion from Sebastien; “Let me give you an example. Take it that you have data on your customers’ past buying behavior

1. Think who“You will never become a good entrepreneur without team work. You need to grow with other people. I started my

company with my best friend and even though we have a similar background we rebalance each other because we challenge each others’ way of thinking. For us it’s aboutt that dual core, the dual foundation. It will be so much harder for you to start alone.”

2. Think how“Find your business by seeking opportunities and be sure to test your ideas as fast as possible. By testing, you can learn more about your client needs and you can adjust to elements you hadn’t foreseen.”

patterns. We can structure these data into something useful and discover new areas of business or ways to improve your marketing efforts. By applying a tailored approach, we can deliver processes or models that you can take action on.” 20 countries in 2 yearsNo doubt Sebastien is passionate about his work and it comes to show even more when he talks about his travels.

“We work a lot with emerging markets. So I have been lucky enough to travel throughout Middle East and Africa. I think, I have actually travelled in more than 20 countries in less than 2 years!” he tells us in a slight French accent and continues: “It’s been amazing to learn new cultures and it’s so valu-able. You know, you don’t talk to an Arab the same way you talk to someone in Africa. I don’t want them to think I’m

3. Think when“You need to choose when you become an entrepreneur. We were very young as entrepreneurs in the JA-YE pro-grammes or right out of university. I know that the older you get the more unlikely you are to become an entrepre-neur, but you need to balance the value of being young versus the value of a few investments like university or a short career such as consultancy”

4. Just do it!“I know way too many people who spend too much time thinking about what they want to do instead of just doing

it. For us it moved fast and we grasped the opportunity when we were free lancers. Find a field where you’re happy and just do it.” 5. Always dream“I don’t want to sound cheasy, but it’s important that you go after what you want. I wrote one of the top thought leaders, Tom Davenport, who is the author of one of the top 20 Harvard articles “Competing on Analytics”, in our business, thinking he would never reply - but he did and now he is the president of our Advisory Board. There’s no shame in failing. The only mistake is not to try.”

just some European dude, but more like a brother.” Being the son of a Belgian dad and an American mother his cul-tural awareness must have started at a very young age. Bath feelingSebastien’s entrepreneurial career also started when he was young, through the JA-YE Company Programme. His company was selling bubble bath soap with differ-ent scents and colors. The company, ‘Bath Feeling’, broke a 10 year old record in having the biggest income.

“I’m really passionate about the JA-YE programmes and this is what inspired me to become an entrepreneur,” Se-bastien tells us and looks out in the room. Behind him is a book case full of colorful books. We wonder if he ever has time to read them, being a busy entrepreneur and all.

His commitment to entrepreneurship continued through university where he took a Master in Business Engi-neering. Here Sebastien launched the French speak-ing alumni organization, Be-Next which is the Belgian French-speaking Alumni organization of Les Jeunes En-treprises (LJE). He also created Starters, the entrepre-

neurial club of the University of Brussels jointly with LJE focusing on creating conferences to encourage people to become entrepreneurs and activities to fund the network.

“I have a lot of great memories from JA-YE Alumni, but my favorite is attending the first alumni confer-ence in Vilnius. I remember us all doing the Bea-ver Song!” he laughs out loud and his brown cur-ly hair bounces as he moves around in the chair. Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur“Some grow up being terrific at creating things. We need to make choices and for me it was always entrepreneur-ship that made me happy,” why it was hard for Sebastien to resist the opportunity to become his own boss and launch his company even though he was living a fast paced life as a consultant at McKinsey & Company upon finishing his studies. “Being a consultant was great for learning and the people I met. I was working every day until mid-night - but for a partner. At a startup you get 100 % return of your own effort. I think I will always be an entrepreneur,” he says with certainty in his voice.

As an entrepreneur it seems that Sebastien has found out what is important in life and we ask him to share some of his

values. “Well, in my company I have no time requirements for example. It’s about the output not the input, do whatever you like as long as you deliver. Also, taking initiative is cool!”

Grow, grow, growSo what’s the next step for this hard working entrepre-neur? “For Real Impact the goal is to grow, grow, grow. grow, grow, grow. We’ve finished to stabilize our com-pany financially. Now, we need more clients and more talented teams. We’ll meet with venture capitalists in Silicon Valley & see whether we should raise funds. We want all that,” he adds with a smile, even bigger this time.

Even though Real Impact is his baby, Sebastien also has per-sonal goals; “The company is important. But you also need an emotional life. I have been with an extraordinary woman for 2 years, but there is still some time left for Allegra and I to think about marriage and kids,” Sebastien tells us show-ing a somewhat softer side that’s not all ‘strictly business’.

“I just want to add something more,” he chips in as we’re getting closer to finishing the interview, “I love JA-YE. It’s where I caught my first entrepreneurial vibes. The alumni network is also a great opportunity. But it’s up to the individ-ual alum to make the difference and get something out of it. It’s about your work and your effort and what you can do for the organization that makes the difference,” he finishes off.

Reluctantly we hang up the call with several pages of scribbled notes in front of us - Can’t we please talk some more about entrpreneurship and how great it is?

I was on my end-of-school trip in Rome when I received the pleasent news that my application for the Sci-Preneurship Contest was one among the chosen. After reading the list of participants I felt very honoured to be part of such a special circle and I couldn’t wait to meet all these interesting people.

Monday the 17th OctoberAfter everybody had arrived safely in the hotel we were divided into mixed groups consisting of two JA-YE Alumni and two Intel ISEF winners. I already knew a few partici-pants from JA-YE Europe, but by far not everyone, es-pecially not from Intel ISEF. However, with the help of some funny icebreakers and since everybody were very open-minded and excited to be there, it was really easy to get closer -also with the people I didn’t know yet.

We felt relieved when we finally got the description of the case, which we were puzzling over the whole morning.

The task was to come up with an innovative commer-cially viable solution to an existing problem that will make a positive impact in society combining our STEM and entrepreneurial skills. No doubt a major challenge, especially considering that we only had 24 hours.

So we immediately started to collect ide-as, which came to mind and as soon as we were floundering we went out on the streets to get new inspiration while speaking with people and look-ing at our surroundings. And so our mind-map rapidly got new branches. Additionally, we could fortunately bank upon the help of six business volunteers

from all over the world. After focusing on one or two ideas they could give a helping hand regard-ing business develop-

It was a great oppor-tunity to get initial

feedback, but it also raised our awareness of all the flaws, which our concept still contained. Hence we could

concentrate all our efforts on eradicating these problems. Since we were totally con-vinced of our idea we passion-ately worked on our solution till our tiredness forced us to get some sleep. It was two o’clock in the morning.

Tuesday the 18th October 2011 We finished the business plan and prepared for our performance on the stage. After a longer coffee break, which turned out as a very fertile networking platform where there was a spry knowledge and experience ex-change between all participants, it was time for the presentations.

What’s Sci-preneurship?

The contest aims to put ‘innovation and creativity’ with the specific focus on Science, Technology, Engeneering and Maths (STEM) in the spotlight through a partnership between Intel and JA-YE Europe.

This is a 24 hour competition where students come together in multinational teams and learn how to generate and shape ideas within a short deadline. They will be using their knowledge and understanding of the issues that they see around them every day, applying science, ‘entrepreneurial’ and team-working skills to find innovative answers.

jury were amazing. I was deeply impressed of the va-riety and the high degree of innovation of the ten busi-ness ideas. You could definitely imagine that each of these concepts could become real companies and would have a very positive impact on our daily life.

The culmination of the whole event was certainly the visit to the European Parliament, where the jury had selected three teams to introduce their business concept in front of several European Parliament and European Com-mission members. Thereafter we had a delicious din-ner at a very cosy restaurant at the Plaza Luxemburg.

Concluding I can say that the Sci-Preneurship Event

in Brussels was a

fantastic experience that surpassed all my expectations. I got to know lots of very interesting people, gained a great amount of useful hints from more versed entrepreneurs and I also got a deeper insight into the world of science.

I enjoyed the international environment a lot and the fact that we achieved to make our initial idea better and better due to our different backgrounds and the experiences related with it.

I am already looking forward or our next get-together!

9th JA-YE Alumni Europe Conference – Porto 2012

Surrounded by the blue ocean, the city of Porto will wel-come the 2012 Alumni Europe’s Conference. Next year we’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of JA-YE Europe and what better time to do it than by the end of August in Portugal?

With unique landscapes, combination of traditional and modern architecture, trendy cuisine and 900 years of his-tory, this conference will be a fantastic opportunity to see old friends, meet new people from all around Europe and learn from fascinating lectures.

The European alumni network has now existed for over seven years and it’s therefore high time for us to take this alumni network to a new level.

Therefore JA-YE Alumni Europe, in collaboration with all national alumni networks, would like to launch a large scale campaign encouraging all active alumni to go back to school and spread JA-YE’s entrepreneurship message. The official occasion for the campaign is the JA-YE Eu-rope’s anniversary in 2012 and the goal is for the network to reach and inspire no less than 100,000 young Europe-ans. This is a huge undertaking and to reach our aim we need all stakeholders to support this.

To spearhead this initiative we first need to create a multinational task force

- this is therefore a call to action aimed at all active alumni.

Please write [email protected] if you want to join the campaign task

force or if you have any questions.

European wide anniversary campaign

The JA Alumni Czech Republic is very proud to be the hosting country for the JA-YE’s NCM 2012! It’s going to take place in Brno, Czech Republic March 15th-19th 2012.

What is this national coordinators meeting going to focus on? Young Achievers in Action - Reaching Organiza-tional Excellence is the topic of our meeting because we feel that this is something that can improve our network significantly. Every regional Alumni club is run by young people, enthusiastic and motivated to show the best per-formance. This all is a great base for a successful future of becoming a European leader. But in order to fulfill all the assigned tasks efficiently, with the best quality of the process and outcomes, it is very important to sit down and plan everything with a cool head. Our training should develop these key competencies in all participants. Organization excellence is a necessary feature of every

active and involved person.

This topic has been chosen after long discussions be-tween the Czech team, the European Alumni Board and partners. There is a need in improving especially these competencies among others. Our network is becoming Europe-wide and organization management is an impor-tant part of our sustainability, which we want to secure, so we can grow Europe-wide and be part of a European society.

You can look forward to learning from many interesting speakers and from workshops, which the Czech team is preparing for you!

LET’S KEEP THE JA-YE FIRE BURNING, THIS TIME IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC!!

With an agenda that will go through all the key points an Alumni Conference has to go, during five days we will see “Action, Passion & Relation” throughout lectures, cross-cultural experiences and a very special event called “Remember the Programme” that will bring back the best entrepreneurial spirit we have inside of us!

Without forgetting the activities we all love, visits to the Port wine cellars, out-door sports activities, city tours and the highly expected Gala Night are sure to be included in the agenda… And of course, we will sing happy birthday to JA-YE Europe’s 1st decade – cake included!

For these and so many more reasons you should not miss the 9th JA-YE Alumni Europe Conference in August 2012.

Virtuel business Challenge

The Virtual Business Challenge is a worldwide busi-ness simulation that aims at teaching students how to manage a company in the most effective way. In the beginning of 2012 JA-YE Europe in coopera-tion with JA-YE Alumni Europe will organize the 9th consecutive VBC regional contest.

In the JA-YE Europe Virtual Business Challenge con-test, students from across Europe form teams and act as corporate competitors in the same high-tech virtual industry. Over a series of business rounds, they make their business decisions on-line. Only the best teams qualify to reach the finals and compete for the prestig-ious awards .
