verleihen.
Was ist Fluidtechnik, was macht sie?
Fluidtechnik – Hydraulik und Pneumatik – überträgt Kraft und
Leistung zum Antreiben, Steuern und Bewegen. Im Unterschied
zur elektrischen Antriebstechnik nutzt sie die physikalische
Eigenschaft eines Fluids wie Wasser, Öl oder Luft, um Kraft
und Leistung zu übertragen. Sie begegnet uns überall im täg-
lichen Leben.
Fluid Power – motion, drive and automation
Just as humans get the suppleness of their movements, ele-
gance and power from their muscles, nerves, brain, bones and
blood, it is hydraulics and pneumatics with their control and
regulatory technologies and mechatronic systems that give
machines, working and traffic systems their speed, power, pre-
cision and dynamics.
What is Fluid Power and what does it do?
Fluid Power – hydraulics and pneumatics – transmits power
and output for driving, controlling and moving. Unlike electrical
power transmission engineering, it uses the physical charac-
teristics of a fluid such as water, oil or air, to transmit power
and output. We come across it in all aspects of our daily lives.
Hardly any product is developed without the use of Fluid Power,
and barely a machine or aircraft moves without it; we are just
not aware of it most of the time.

Fluid Power – powerful and precise
The dynamics of machines and plants is often the result of
hydraulic and pneumatic power transmission and control tech-
nology. For linear and rotary movements, even lifting or lower-
ing movements, acceleration requirements, transferring power
or positioning and holding in position, hydraulic and pneumatic
components are used in almost all areas of industry.
In competition with other forms of power transmission engin-
eering, the outstanding feature of hydraulics is their particu-
larly high power to size ratio, while pneumatics epitomise
speed and compactness. Due to their cost efficiency and easy
handling and assembly, they are unbeaten in a large number of
applications.
The low power-weight ratio and the high power-to-size ratio
mean that hydraulics are predestined for mobile applications,
such as in construction machinery, agricultural machinery
and communal machines. They also allow the generation of
high forces and torques at low speeds and rotational speeds
in stationary applications, such as machine tools and plastics
machinery. Braking procedures are easy to perform without
causing wear and tear. The braking energy can easily be stored
and fed back to the system as and when required. In combina-
tion with electronic regulation systems, positioning accuracies
can be achieved that are the equal of any electrical drive. This
enhances the performance of machines, increases customer
benefits and allows the constant development of new applica-
tions.

An application derived from this is hydroforming, which allows
new opportunities for lightweight designs. To reshape a work
piece in a machine for non-cutting production, the reshaping
forces are usually transferred to the work piece via the tool.
In the case of high-pressure metal forming, however, the tool
limits the outer contour of the finished work piece. The re-
quisite reshaping force is applied to the work piece from the
inside outwards, whereby hydraulic pressure influences the
internal area of the work piece, thus forcing it into the desired
shape.
What about pneumatics with air as a working agent? It is
now an inseparable part of automation. It is synonymous
with dynamics, speed and productivity in the smallest area,
and therefore an integral element of all renowned sectors of
the manufacturing industry. However, even in the clean room,
where top quality and cleanliness in production are crucial,
pneumatics contributes to economic efficiency, be it in medi-
cal technology, in the production of chips and printed circuit
boards, in the dispensary or in food processing. The range of
uses is multifarious, ranging from assembly and handling tasks
through feeding and positioning tasks to joining, sorting and
test processes. Thanks to electronic control systems, pneumat-
ics have long been able to travel not only to final stops but also
to intermediate positions, be it in linear or rotary movements.

Anpassungsfähigkeit an unterschiedliche Aufgabenstellungen,
auch unter widrigsten Umweltbedingungen. Fluidtechnische

Fluid Power – hidden power
Hydraulics and pneumatics are now an indispensable part of
everyday working processes. Powerful and reliable, they relieve
people of heavy and monotonous work and provide support
for tasks requiring speed and uniform quality. Production pro-
cesses are made more economically efficient through the use of
hydraulic and pneumatic components. The extreme versatility
of Fluid Power is revealed in its interaction with modern and
easy to set up and operate electronic control units. It constantly
proves its ability to adapt to a wide range of tasks, even under
extremely adverse environmental conditions. Fluid Power
systems perform their tasks efficiently and reliably, in sub-zero
temperatures and tropical heat alike, and in both the desert
and the clean room.
However, it is often working away unnoticed in the background,
as in stage technology for example. Moving stage assemblies
driven by hydraulic pressure have fascinated the public and
production managers alike for 200 years. Modern hydraulic
stage drives are now an integral part of the basic equipment

antriebe gehören heute zur Grundausstattung vieler renom-
mierter Theater.
Walzwerken. Anwender schätzen an der Systemtechnologie
besonders den ausgereiften technologischen Standard. Dazu
zählen vor allem der hohe Automatisierungsgrad, enorme
Leistungsdichte bei gleichzeitig erheblicher Reduzierung der
Antriebsenergie sowie beste Standfestigkeit und nicht zuletzt
der kundenfreundliche und zuverlässige Service.
of a large number of renowned theatres, which are already
equipped with modern, precise and quiet stage technology.
System solutions are characterised by a safety level not paral-
leled anywhere else in the world, extreme user-friendliness and
optimum availability. Smelting, forging, casting, rolling: what-
ever metal production and processing procedures are required
in companies, fluid technology can support efficient operation
of the plants with a broad base of expertise.
In metallurgy, the particular watchwords of the day are eco-
nomic efficiency, precision and speed. The environmental
conditions are not surprisingly unfavourable, in view of the
heat, dust and vibrations. However, the systems must also lift,
feed, shape and process with maximum reliability under such
adverse conditions.
Hydraulic power transmission engineering is used in all re-
nowned metallurgical companies, namely in foundries, metal-
lurgical plants and rolling mills. Users particularly value the
system technology because of its high stage of development.
Particular positive aspects include the high level of automation,
the extremely high power-to-size ratio coupled with a reduction
of drive power required, maximum stability and, last but not
least, the customer-friendly and reliable service.

schaftlichkeit mobiler Arbeitsmaschinen. Gewicht und Volu-
men der hydraulischen Antriebselemente ermöglichen deren
Antriebsbewegungen profitieren vom ununterbrochenen,
stufenlosen Energiefluss.
Fluid Power – moving the world
Vehicles and mobile machines (excavators, farming tractors,
heavy goods vehicles, trains, aircraft and ships) benefit from
the advantages of hydraulic drives and control mechanisms.
The free hand given in arranging all Fluid Power components
(compact and low-maintenance) in designs is ideal for use in all
types of vehicle.
The reversal of movements within milliseconds, hydraulically
triggered, leads to unbeaten economic efficiency in mobile
machines. The weight and volume of the hydraulic drive
elements allow their use in precisely the place where the trans-
mission of power is required. The respective task is reliably
performed by hydraulics with automatic regulation. All power-
ful working movements benefit from an uninterrupted, smooth
flow of energy.

Hydraulics provide the machine operator with the optimum
ratio of power and speed at all times. The manoeuvrability of
hydraulically operated mobile machines is often greater than
that of a car. A joystick and touch screen are now an integral
part of vehicle cockpits.
Pneumatic and hydraulic components are located not only in
the door opening mechanism, but also in the boarding aids.
A pneumatic cylinder with no piston rod is installed to set the
outer doors of high-speed trains with a mass of up to 130 kg
in motion using an external guide, to open the doors smoothly
and then securely shut them again.
Other possible applications in the fields of trains include lock-
ing and unlocking, loading and unloading, active wagon body
tilting, electrohydraulic brakes, suspension, through to active
centrifugal force compensation mechanisms.

Kunststoff bestehen. Hygiene und Oberflächenmaterial setzen

Fluid Power – stills hunger and quenches thirst
How does the beer get into the bottle, who controls the
harvester and who packs the food found on supermarket
shelves so hygienically? Fluid Power with its pneumatic
and hydraulic components is involved in all machines and
systems that produce or package everyday products.
We come across it every day and it ensures that the goods we
require every day are efficiently supplied. When cultivating the
fields and crops, Fluid Power with hydraulic solutions is used.
Efficient motion mechanisms and operating drives can now
only be created using hydraulic components and are therefore
an elementary part of modern agricultural machinery.
Strict production technology regulations apply to the packaging
and food industry. In the food industry, yoghurt is hygienically
transferred from production to packaging and, without a break
in the cooling chain, to the shop floor. Products made of stain-
less steel or plastic suitable for food contact are used. Hygiene
and surface material pose problems that are expertly solved by
Fluid Power, particularly pneumatics or water hydraulics. Entire

Trockenprozess. Nahrungsmittelherstellung und Verpackung
verschmelzen zu einer Anlage. Lange Stillstandszeiten sind
mit reinigungsfreundlichen Komponenten im Clean Design
vergessen. Modulare Bau- und Wirkungsweisen der Anlagen
berücksichtigen den schnelllebigen Verbrauchermarkt. Häufige
Produktwechsel bereiten keine langen Umrüstzeiten.
Moderne Steuerungstechniken halten auch hier Einzug: Stan-
dardisierte Feldbussysteme und Industrie-PCs sind Stand der
Technik. Anwendungen mit Ethernet schlagen die Brücke zwi-
schen Produktions- und Bürowelt. Die Schwerpunkte liegen auf
einfacher Bedienbarkeit und erhöhter Transparenz bezüglich
der Prozessdaten.
solutions consisting of drives, sensors, valves and internal
connection systems comply with statutory requirements and
allow manufacturers to convert to new products and environ-
mentally-friendly packaging technologies quickly and with a
good return on investment.
However, pneumatics is also used to directly manufacture
foods. Just a few examples: in dough kneading machines, the
lids are opened and closed pneumatically. In bin systems, the
flaps and loading channels are controlled pneumatically.
Trends in the food and packaging industry are indicative of the
convergence of machinery from the wet and dry process. Food
production and packaging are merged into one system. Long
downtimes are consigned to the past, thanks to easy-to-clean
components designed to stay clean. The modular design and
operating mechanisms of the systems have been developed to
take into account the rapidly changing consumer market.
Frequent product changes do not mean long retooling times.
Modern control systems are also entering the field here: stand-
ardised field bus systems and industrial PCs are state-of-the-
art. Ethernet applications bridge the gap between the produc-
tion and office worlds. The emphasis is on simple operation and
increased transparency with regard to process data.

Fluidtechnik – dient unserer Umwelt
Fluid Power – serving our environment
Technology, people and the environment are not mutually ex-
clusive. On the contrary, innovative technologies, investment
and the creativity of people are today shaping our future.
A rapidly growing world population and scant resources are
the challenges we must face.
In view of this, technological progress is of key importance, with
the machinery and plant construction industry taking centre
stage. The challenges placed on us increase not only due to the
increased pressure of competition, but increasingly due to the
environmental impact and our objective of offering as many
people as possible a decent world to live in. We will therefore
continue to develop new technological solutions, and the
demand for innovative products will increase further. The aim
is to prevent harmful environmental influences or, where this is
not possible, to reduce their impact.

VDMA Fluidtechnik
in weitgehend emissionsfreien Prozessen. Leckagefreie Systeme
senken, Brücken bewegen – Fluidtechnik beweist in allen Berei-
chen ihre Kompetenz – weltweit.
Fluid Power is used in a number of applications with a view to
preserving the environment: in wind power stations to move
the rotor blades into the optimum wind position, in conven-
tional power stations for flue gas desulphurisation, in waste
disposal and in recycling, in water treatment, in sewage treat-
ment and in agriculture and forestry. Fluid Power reliably con-
trols procedures and processes that will safeguard the future of
our environment.
Energy-generating systems such as gas or steam turbines bene-
fit from the large number of possible applications of fluid tech-
nologies. Ultramodern regulatory, control and safety systems
contribute to the optimum utilisation of the energy used. They
are dominated by the fluid sector, with the use of the least
number of individual components, the maximum efficiency
permitted by state-of-the-art technology and the maximum
reliability possible. Natural pressure agents such as air, water
and oil are used in largely emission-free processes. Leak-proof
systems prevent mixing where necessary.

Fluidtechnik – steuert Fertigungsprozesse
Fluid Power – controls production processes
Wherever things are on the move, fluid manufacturers provide
the driving power. The basis of all activities is general mechani-
cal engineering. The fluid sector provides packaged solutions,
tailor-made to perform the required task and so highly devel-
oped that project managers can concentrate on what they
should be doing. All customers are accompanied and profes-
sionally supported through the entire life cycle of the product,
from the initial brainstorming through commissioning to the
servicing of a ready-made system.
Thanks to the enormous development progress in electro-
hydraulic components and systems over the last few years, the
high requirements for the dynamics and precision of feed axes
in cutting machine tools have been met. The advantages of this
medium (high power-to-size ratio) have thus been combined
with the precise controllability of electrohydraulics. The cylinder
as a linear moving element is an ideal machine component that
performs the feeding motion extremely efficiently without
conversion. The requisite motional and positional precision is
achieved using digital sensors and control mechanisms in
conjunction with precise regulating valves.

Intelligente Steuerungssysteme mit einfach zu bedienenden
Teachfunktionen versetzen die Pneumatik in die Lage, die Pro-
duktivität durch höhere Verfahrgeschwindigkeiten und mehr
Dynamik zu steigern. Gleichzeitig steigt die Flexibilität der
Anwender.
Automatisierungstechnik.
Energy and efficiency are becoming increasingly important cri-
teria, in addition to the technical function of the axles. Consid-
erable thought was given during the development of hydraulic
power transmission engineering to improving efficiency and
minimising the use of energy.
Intelligent control systems with easy-to-operate teach func-
tions enable pneumatics to increase productivity through
higher path feed rates and greater dynamics. The flexibility of
users is also increased.
Intelligent control and motion today always involves integra-
tion into existing or new networks, be it on the field bus level in
mechanical engineering or in all-encompassing networks. The
decentralised intelligence of actors and sensors is increasing.
Data required by quality assurance, for example, can be called
up online. The operating hours counter of the compressed air
system or hydraulic assembly can be read on a PC. All such tasks
that in themselves are small but taken together have a signifi-
cant impact on the productivity of a system can be performed
cost-effectively by means of networking.
However, intelligent control and motion begins in the planning
and design stage. Numerous software programmes support
users in designing hydraulic and pneumatic systems, dimen-
sioning cylinders, grabs, vacuum suction equipment, valve
terminals. Even complete assembly and handling systems
can be dimensioned, and simulated in the planning stage
to assess functionality. The “Plug & Play” concept of the PC
world is thus being adapted to “Plug & Work” in automation
technology.

Fluidtechnik – sichert unsere Zukunft

Fluid Power – securing our future
Fluid Power is excellently equipped for the future. Thanks to the
ease with which it is possible to link its components with elec-
tronic control mechanisms, the high power-to-size ratio and the
optimisation of component sizes made possible by technical
progress, it will always be a driving force. Increasingly efficient
sensors, modern bus systems, ergonomic operating and diag-
nostic systems combine Fluid Power with electronics to form
future-proof automation and drive systems for the require-
ments of tomorrow.
Modern bus technology has revolutionised installation and the
monitoring of functionality. The significant installation costs for
the production and assembly of machines and systems can be
reduced using this technology. The further development of this
technology will lead from the monitoring of control processes
to diagnosis and, if required, remote diagnosis.
Smaller, faster and better: pneumatic drives and control mecha-

increasing productivity. Fluid Power is taking account of this
and producing new technologies such as the microsystem tech-
nology and mechatronics.
The latest developments in fluid technology, such as the fluidic
muscle, are rooted in bionics. In simple terms, the pneumatic
principle of the muscle is a flexible tube that expands in vol-
ume under pressure, but reduces in length. This simple yet
ingenious principle opens up unimaginable ranges of use both
within and outside of automation technology.
Intelligent robot systems combined with size-optimised pneu-
matic assemblies and advanced sensor technology provide clear
evidence of the trend towards integrated product and system
solutions. Monodisciplinary solutions are a thing of the past.
Fluid Power focuses on the integration of functions and the
reduction of external interfaces. Customers are concentrating
more and more on their core competence and therefore require
ready-made and tested subsystems instead of individual com-
ponents. This saves time and costs in their process chain, but
also increases the requirement for high-quality customer rela-
tions management – a challenge fluid technology is happy to
take on board.

tungselementen. Solche Anforderungen lassen sich nur auf
Basis kontinuierlicher Grundlagenforschung realisieren. So
Fluid Power in detail: reliable sealing systems
Fluid Power and process technology place great demands on
the developers and manufacturers of sealing systems. The fields
of application, for example in mobile and stationary installa-
tions, machine tools, agricultural and forestry equipment, in the
aerospace industry and many other applications are many and
varied and are characterised by a wide range of different oper-
ating conditions. Pressures of up to 60 MPa, temperature ranges
from –40 to + 300 °C, combined with environmental influences
such as humidity or heavy contamination are the norm. Added
to these are strong vibrations, pressure peaks, lateral forces etc.
To guarantee functional reliability over the entire spectrum of
operating conditions, the materials used and the geometry of
sealing systems must be carefully matched.
Users are, however, no longer satisfied with merely the reliable
handling and controlling of forces. They expect quick and pre-
cise forecasts on the long-term behaviour of sealing elements.
Constant basic research is required if such requirements are to
be realised. Knowledge of tribological processes for example is

constantly increasing and the geometry of sealing elements
is optimally calculated in the development phase using the
FEM (Finite Element Method) to attain the desired results
more quickly.
Sealing systems make an active contribution to keeping the
environment clean. Where plant and machinery are operated
with ecologically harmful media, seals have to ensure that such
media do not leak out of the Fluid Power circuit. The trend
towards using biologically degradable hydraulic fluids in par-
ticular areas of Fluid Power technology – in robotics, in agricul-
ture and forestry and in mobile hydraulics – has led to the
development of special sealing materials for these fluids. New
materials have also been developed for ozone-protecting refrige-
rants in air-conditioning systems, for pneumatic operations
using oil-free air and for numerous other applications.
In addition to their original sealing function, sealing elements
will in future also take over other system-relevant tasks. Devel-
opments aimed at equipping modern intelligent sealing sys-
tems with pressure sensors, displacement sensors or tempera-
ture sensors are already underway, making a form of self-diag-
nosis conceivable. This means that sealing elements would
detect incipient wear and readjust automatically in order to
maintain the function over a definable period of time. A vision
which will soon be reality in this dynamic branch and make
technology and our environment safer.
Modern sealing technology combined with environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids mean that hydraulics can also be used safely, for example in forests

Fluid Power – initial and further training
People and their commitment and creativity are the greatest
asset of a company. In a technologically leading sector such as
Fluid Power with increasing globalisation and changing
markets, skilled employees are an important competitive factor.
Technically sophisticated Fluid Power products can only
be manufactured using highly skilled specialists who are
frequently trained by the companies themselves. At present,
there are more vacancies for jobs than applicants. The future
prospects for specialists and engineers have therefore never
been better.
Modern Fluid Power needs people who are experts in the fields
of mechanics, electrical engineering and information technol-
ogy. This diverse and demanding field of work requires a life-
long exchange of experience and a continuous learning process
in the form of initial and further training.
To ensure modern and relevant initial and further training, the
association, together with its members and training institutes,
are devising new concepts for attracting skilled employees to
the sector who are interested in technology, and in particular in
the following:
• the career of a mechatronic
• university courses in mechatronics, and also
• a career as a fluid engineer/fluid project manager according to

The convergence of mechanical engineering, electronics, sensor
technology and software to form mechatronics is an important
trend and particularly describes the requirements of industry
for interdisciplinary training. The three-year training course in
place since August 1998 includes mechanics, hydraulics, pneu-
matics, electrical engineering and electronics, control and regu-
latory technology and information technology.
Above all, Fluid Power means developing customer solutions
of the highest technological standard in an innovative and
dynamic environment, thus shaping and simplifying a number
of everyday applications. However, it also means keeping a
finger on the pulse at all times and being part of a sector that
operates on the global market. Depending on the individual
skills and training, either contributions can be made to techno-
logical progress in research, development, design and produc-
tion, or employees can forge a link with the commercial sector
in sales and management.
Further information on the recruitment drive in the engin-
eering division of the entire mechanical engineering sector

in the sector can be found on the homepage www.vdma.org or
directly under www.think-ing.de. Teaching material on the sub-
ject of sealing systems for Fluid Power applications has been
produced by the fluid seals working group of the Fluid Power
association and made available to colleges free of charge. In the
meantime, the teaching material has been published as a
PowerPoint presentation of approximately 180 slides on
CD-ROM. A major recruitment drive was also started in 2001.
The association is also supporting the activities for placing

Anlagenbaus. Die Produktionswerte der Hydraulik und Pneuma-

Fluid Power – the financial importance of the sector
Fluid Power is a supplier industry. Its technologically advanced
products, from simple elements through components and
modular subsystems to complex assemblies and systems are in
turn installed in machines, production lines and systems
for a wide range of sectors. The fluid sector therefore contri-
butes considerably to the competitiveness of its customer
sectors.
Fluid Power products are usually invisible when in use, which
is perhaps one reason why the financial importance of this
specialist sector is often not fully appreciated and easily
underestimated by the public. With approximately 27,000
employees and a sales volume of almost EUR 4.1 billion in
2001, the sector is an important supplier industry within the
machinery and plant construction industry. This is not even tak-
ing into account the production value of hydraulics and pneu-
matics for the automotive sector.
Thanks to the excellent technological position of the German
Fluid Power industry, consisting largely of small and medium-
sized companies, it has succeeded in establishing a position of
eminence across the world, thanks to its products. The export

gleichsweise niedrigpreisigen, gleichwohl technisch hochwerti-

Sensorik, Material Design, Fertigungstechnik).

rate is currently around 50 %, thus generating high value for a
supplier industry with comparatively low-priced but technologi-
cally high-quality products. The products remaining on the Ger-
man market are largely used in mechanical engineering, which
in turn has an export rate of approximately 60 %, which means
that the level of internationalisation, including indirect exports,
is approximately 80 %. In 2000, the fluid sector in Germany con-
tinued to be the world’s leading machine exporter in its sector
at approx. 32 %, compared with its main competitor nations the
USA (14.2 %) and Japan (13.5 %), thereby achieving record values
compared with other sectors.
The fact that the technological leaders of the main customer
sectors are based in Germany, as are the suppliers of important
base technologies (e. g. sensor technology, material design,
production technology), is an advantage. This proximity and
the long-standing business relations between supplier and cus-
tomer sectors create an atmosphere in which new technologies
such as micropneumatics or hydraulics are developed as a result
of technological progress. The improved control and regulatory
capacity, the positioning precision and the greater efficiency of
fluid technology components achieved over the last few years
have allowed manufacturers to tap into new markets. The com-
panies themselves, with creative employees, efficient structures
and global corporate strategies, are in an ideal position. The
prospects for the future are therefore also good.

FLUIDPOWER-e-market: from companies – for companies
FLUIDPOWER-e-market has been online since May 15, 2002.
It was not only in the drawing up of the classification, which
involved almost all leading companies from within the sector,
that the industry experts brought their expertise to bear, but
also in the development of the functionalities.
In 1999, VDMA began to open up a section of the e-business
world to its member companies in the pilot area of drive tech-
nology: this was achieved by developing an extensive online
manufacturer product catalogue based on the companies’
own online catalogues; 11 trade associations are now involved
in this project, which is becoming increasingly popular in the
mechanical engineering industry – both with the participating
companies and with customers.
The market’s target groups include both designers and devel-
opers as well as technical procurement. This centralised range
provides the groups with rapid and targeted information about
products, companies and services provided by manufacturers
of fluid technology products. The market is supplemented with
general information about Fluid Power (keyword fiz technol-
ogy). The product search feature shows the central functions.
The classification’s tree structure enables the user intuitively to

select the required product category, and the number shown
after the product category indicates how many products are
entered here. The user also has the opportunity to narrow his
search by specifying additional technical features. Where the
search has been set and more than ten matches are found, the
user will be shown a list of companies offering products which
match the specifications entered. Where there are up to ten
matches, a list of these products will be displayed directly for
the user.
Each product should be assigned a direct link to the appropriate
product page on the company’s website. If the company does
not have a corresponding web page, it may be possible to set
up a standard product page on the FLUIDPOWER-e-market. Up
to three pictures of the product may be included with the text
here. According to the input, the technical features will be dis-
played automatically along with information about the compa-
ny and a description of the product. The innovative basic idea of
this market is that the data should be maintained decentrally.
Each subscriber (manufacturer) is responsible for maintaining
his own data. This should ensure that all data is current.
SEALS-e-market
The SEALS-e-market has been online since October 1, 2001. The
production programmes of 12 companies are currently actively
represented on the market. This covers the majority of the mar-
ket. The SEALS-e-market includes hydraulic seals, pneumatic
seals and axial face seals. The constant development of the
market should also ensure that further areas connected with
seals can be extended and expanded.

VDMA Fluidtechnik
Der Fachverband Fluidtechnik im VDMA
Eingebettet in den VDMA – Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und
Anlagenbau e. V. – ist der Fachverband Fluidtechnik der Bran-
chenverband in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für Hersteller
von hydraulischen und pneumatischen Produkten sowie dem
technologienahen Umfeld.
The Fluid Power association in VDMA
Incorporated into VDMA (German Machinery and Plant Manu-
facturers Association), the Fluid Power association is the sector
association in the Federal Republic of Germany for manufac-
turers of hydraulic and pneumatic products and fields relating
to this technology. In addition to the services specific to the
association, the members also use the diverse range of services
of the umbrella association with its 3,000 members. It is based
largely on four pillars: the sector-specific services of the respec-
tive associations, the cross-sector services of the cross-sectional
departments of VDMA, the on-site service provided by the local
associations and the company-specific services provided by the
VDMA service companies.
The Fluid Power association is responsible for financial and
technical issues arising in the sector. In terms of market surveys
and statistics, member companies receive up-to-the-minute
and extensive data in the form of monthly incoming order and
sales statistics, comprehensive quarterly statistics, through to
special surveys on current issues (e. g. terms of payment, sales
surveys, etc.). These allow members to monitor their current
market position and make appropriate strategic decisions.
Benchmarking is the keyword here.
The committees of the association are also always meeting
points for the sector. Representatives of the companies meet
to discuss a wide range of issues. In the financial committee, it
is often the commercial management which discusses sales or
management issues or the general economic conditions.

The specialist working groups responsible for public relations
work in the sector and market research into pneumatics and
hydraulics complete the commercial division. In the technical
division, almost 100 project groups are concerned with the key
issue for an export-oriented sector of national and interna-
tional standardisation. However, we are also a partner to the
companies in supporting marketing activities, be it the area of
trade fairs by overseeing international sector trade fairs such as
“Motion, Drive and Automation (MDA)” as part of the Hanover
industry and catalogue exhibitions trade fair, through to a joint
sector internet site (www.FLUIDPOWER-e-market.com) as a sales-
oriented internet market place as part of the VDMA-e-market.
Researching together for the future is the adage of the Fluid
Power research fund in which leading companies from the
fluid sector have joined forces to jointly tackle research projects
for the common good of the sector. The research team selects
strategically important research projects and oversees their
completion by selected partners at institutes of higher educa-
tion. With regard to international collaboration, the associa-
tion oversees the European sector association CETOP, is joint
initiator of the world summit meetings of the sector and also
heads the international Fluid Power statistics office, ISC. With
a significant increase in the number of members over the last
few years, some 168 manufacturers represent the majority of
the total sales of the sector in the Federal Republic of Germany
(market representation of approximately 85 %). The strategic
orientation of our association is prescribed by the Chairperson.
The association regards itself as a service provider for its mem-
bers and therefore bases its tasks, in close collaboration with
the industry, on responding to future challenges.
