e. Size and weight of entries may be determined by the Symposium Committee and Host Gallery or Museum.
f. If slides are to be submitted, three (3) slides are required for three (3) dimensional entries and valid two (2) dimensional entries. One (1) slide for paintings and/or graphics.
g. The Symposium Committee may make the decision to allow either color or black and white photographs of entries in addition to slides.
12. Designation of Associate Members All publications, membership lists, etc. must be designated associate
members by an asterik. 13. Historian
It is the duty of the Historian who is to be appointed by the President to work with Area Chairmen, to get notices of exhibitions, awards, photos, clippings, etc. for the State file. The Historian shall write an annual report on members' activities. Information shall be forwarded to the President for inclusion in Membership News. The slide collection of members' work in the past annual exhibitions shall be kept by the Historian and made available for use at the Annual Meeting and for Area Meetings, if requested.
14. Exhibition Eligibility All artist members in good standing are eligible to exhibit in Area and
State exhibitions. Associate members are not eligible to exhibit at any time.
15. Parliamentarian A Parliamentarian is to be appointed by the President every two (2)
years.
ARTICLE IV 1. Headquarters
Headquarters established at time of incorporation at Orlando shall be maintained there or elsewhere in the State of Florida at the city of residence of the presiding President.

FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP, INC.
PURPOSE
The FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP was incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose is the stimulation of finer standards of the creative effort within the State of Florida.
ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM
Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a members' exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Its educational and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.
In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.
JURIED SHOWS
To insure an annual exhibition of exceptional quality, the show is juried. The organization always brings in an eminent juror from out-of-state who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or sculptor of national repute. Past locations of Exhibitions have included the Norton Gallery, Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonville Art Museum, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Rollins College, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries.
Area VII -Hendry, Lee and Collier Counties. Area VIII - Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okeloosa, Walton, Holmes,
Washington, Bay, Jackson, Calhoun, Gulf, Gadsden, Liberty, Franklin, Leon, Wakulla and Jefferson Counties.
e. Each Area is requested to maintain at their discretion a scrapbook of Area activities.
10. Standing Committees a. Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee shall be a standing committee con· sisting of five (5) members who shall be appointed by the Board of Directors at the first Board meeting following the Annual Member· ship Meeting. No more than two (2) members of the Board may serve on the Nominating Committee, one (1) to serve as Chairman. Three members of the committee shall constitute a quorum and any action taken by the committee shall be by vote of three (3) or more members. Any vacancy on the committee shall be filled by the Board of Direc· tors. The proposed slate of officers chosen by the Nominating Com· mittee must be finalized in time to be presented to the membership simultaneously with the notification of the Annual Membership Meeting. Officers will be elected at the Annual Membership Meeting. Vote by proxy shall be accepted and delivered by the Area Chairmen. Nominations may be made from the floor and a ballot may be called for by any voting member.
b. Annual Exhibition Committee This committee is charged with the responsibility of locating a
suitable museum, art gallery or college gallery for the Annual Exhibition. This committee is further charged with the responsibility of securing an out of state juror of eminence to jury the Annual Exhibition. The committee shall work closely with the President on these important matters. President shall select a Chairman of this committee and shall select at least two (2) committee members.
c. By-Laws Committee To be appointed by the Board of Directors and to be comprised
of no less than one (1) Board member and no less than one (1) member-at-large. Purpose of this committee is to prepare amend· ments and/or revisions of the by-laws for the vote of the member· ship at the Annual Membership Meeting. Keep by-laws up to date.
d. State Awards Committee A Chairman of this committee shall be appointed by the President
and the Chairman shall choose two (2) members to make up a com· mittee of three (3). This committee shall contact any present award patrons. They shall explore new award money through individuals, corporations, grants, etc. Memorial awards are to be encouraged. A letter of appreciation shall be sent immediately to thank donors for their participation. Later in the year all donors must be contacted again to confirm their continuing support for the next Spring Annual Exhibition.
11. Rules Governing Annual Exhibition a. The President and the Exhibition Chairman may be included in the
exhibition but may not be in competition. b. An out of state juror is required, preferably a museum or gallery direc
tor or a prominent nationally known artist painter and/or sculptor. c. The Symposium Chairman and Committee may make the decision
to use slides or not, preferably not, based on factors relevant to Juror's preference, mileage factors, avai lablity of shuttle service, etc. Suffi· cient advance notice and entry forms must be mailed to member· ship in order for them to have time to prepare slides.
d. Two (2) entries may be submitted, if feasibile, but ONLY ONE entry per member may be ACCEPTED for the Annual Exhibition. This is MANDATORY. Juror must be informed of all rulings pertaining to the exhibition in advance through a Guide Sheet.

b. Executive Committee The officers const itute the Executive Committee who shall deal
with emergency s ituations as they may arise between meetings of the Board of Directors and shall report all their actions at the next regular or special meeting of the full Board. No officer except the corresponding and/or recording secretary and the treasurer shall serve more than two (2) consecutive terms (4 years) in the same office. Three members of the executive committee shall constitute a quorum.
c. Board of Directors The affairs of the corporation shall be managed by the Board of
Directors. The Board shall include the officers, the State Membership Chairman, the Area Chairmen, two (2) Directors-at-Large and a representative of a gallery or a museum and/or the Fine Arts depart· ment of an institution of higher education. The entire board shall have equal voting rights. Five (5) members shall constitute a quorum and must include two (2) officers.
8. Meetings a. The membership Annual Meeting and Exhibition shall be held
preferably during April or May, date to be selected at the discretion of the Board. Members must be notified by mail at least sixty (60) days in advance.
b. Special meetings may be called by the President or may be called by written petition of fifteen (15) voting members in good standing. Action at special meetings shal l not be limited to just the one sub· ject stated as the purpose of the meetings. Refer to Article Ill, par. 2 of the By-Laws.
c. Meetings of the Board of Directors shal l be called by the President with the necessity for same being determined by the entire Board of Directors. Three (3) meetings are suggested but not mandatory.
d. The Executive Committee shall meet following the Annual Meeting when any new officers assume office.
e. When new officers are elected bi-annually, appointments to the Board of Directors of State Membership Chairman, Area Chairmen, Directors-at-Large and a representative of a gallery or a museum and/or the Fine Arts department of an institution of higher education shall be made within three (3) months following the election. All directors to be notified in writing of their appointments.
9. Area Organizations a. There are presently eight (8) Areas in Florida Artist Group, Inc. The
President appoints a chairman from each Area to serve unless the Area members prefer to elect their own chairman. Each Area Chairman si ts on the Board of Directors.
b. Each Area has the right of self determination as to organization and make-up.
c. Area Chairmen are to act in behalf of their Area Members, arranging exhibitions, meetings, social affairs, etc.
d. The Areas of Florida Artist Group, Inc. presently are: Area I - Broward, Dade and Monroe Counties. Area II - Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee Counties. Area Ill -Charlotte, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee
and Sarasota Counties. Area IV - Hillborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, Sumter and
Citrus Counties. Area V -Indian River, Brevard, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, Polk
and Lake Counties. Area VI - Valusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Duval, Nassau, Clay, Putman,
Marion, Alachua, Bradford, Union, Baker, Columbia, Gi llchrist, Levy, Dixie, Lafayette, Suwanee, Hamilton Madison and Taylor Counties.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Celebrating our 40th Anniversary, we recall the proud tradition of the Florida Artist Group: the innovative traveling shows, the challenging Symposiums and Annual Exhibitions, but most of all, a professional, active membership. Now is the time to look to the future and even more exciting directions for the organization.
On behalf of the Board and Membership, I would like to thank the Sarasota Art Association for providing us such a large, beautiful exhibition space. We are grateful to Area Ill for all their work. We are indebted to the generosity of all the sponsors, old and new, for their Awards. Thanks to Dorothy Gillespie for jurying the Awards.
I would like to thank all of you for coming and making our 40th Anniversary Symposium a success. See you in Naples next year.

g. Inactive Members Pay dues and join in a ll activites. NO VOTE. Do not have to submit
to Annual Exhibition. Any member has the right to request an inactive status due to the fol lowing: out of country, age, illness, family or business reasons. May regain Active Status upon application to and vote by the entire Board of Directors.
h. Complimentary Members The Art Museum Directors in each Area will automatically be Com
plimentary Members of the Florida Artist Group, Inc. with no vote or exhibiting privi leges. The Museums must be accredited Members of the Association of American Museums.
4. Membership Qualifications a. Members must reside in Florida at least six (6) months of each year. b. Membership is by invitation only. c. Prospect ive members must submit fi ve slides or photographs of re
cent art work and a brief resume of professional art experience to their Area Chairman. The Area Chairman and two area members must view the actual art work. After their approval, the slides or photos and resume must be sent to the Florida Artist Group membership committee for majority approval. FULFILLING THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS DOES NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEE AN INVITATION TO MEMBERSHIP IN THE FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP, INC.
d . Exception The Board of Di.rectors, by unaminous vote of the entire board, may
admit an exceptionally qualified talent into membership. Such a distinquished artist may be brought to the attention of the board by area chairman or the membership chairman with supporting resume of the prospect.
5. Membership Retention a. All members must have dues paid to date to be in good standing. b. All artist members must submit an entry to the annual exhibition at
least once within three years in order to retain membership except in extenuating circumstances subject to approval of the Board of Directors.
c. Anyone wishing to petition for reinstatement must contact the Board of Directors through the President. The Board of Directors may act at their qualified discret ion.
6. Membership Dues a. Annual membership dues are to be set by the Board of Directors. b. Dues will be billed as of September 1st and will become due and
payable by October 1st each year. Dues become delinquent as of January 1st each year. Any delinquent members may be dropped from membership roster and must apply for reinstatement.
c. Area Chairmen are to follow through and make sure all members of their area are paid prior to January 1st of each year. Treasurer shall notify Area Chairmen by October 15th and December 15th of each year of status of Area Members.
d. The sum of $200, more or less as needed, of membership dues is allocated for the President's expenses each year.
e. A percentage of each member's dues per year in the respective areas to be returned to each Area Chairman for expenses. Accounting of these monies to be kept by each Area Chairman.
7. State Organization a. Officers
Officers of the Corporation shall be a president who shall serve, ex-officio, as chairman of the executive committee, a senior vice president, a vice president, a corresponding secretary and/or a recording secretary, a treasurer and immediate past president. ONLY full voting members who have served on the Board of Directors for a full term (at any time) may serve as officers except in the event that it becomes

ARTICLE I
As evidenced by the Certification of Incorporation granted by the State of Florida on June 30, 1949 and reincorporated February 3, 1965, the name of this corporation shall be:
PURPOSE
Florida Artist Group, Inc. (A Non-Profit Corporation)
ARTICLE II
The purpose of this Corporation is to exemplify the highest standards in exhibition of works of art and the stimulation of finer standards of creative effort within the State of Florida.
ARTICLE Ill BY-LAWS
1. The by-laws of this Corporation shall govern the affairs of the organization. They may be amended or recinded at any annual meeting by majority vote of the membership. Majority vote to be comprised of the votes of members present and/or by proxy.
2. Robert's Rules of Order (revised) shal l be the parlimentary authority when not in conflict w ith the Charter, the Laws of the State of Florida and the By-Laws of this Corporation.
3. Membership a. Founding Members

The incorporators named in the Charter are automatically Charter Members as are those elected at the first meeting held June 30, 1949 as officers and members of the Executive Committee. Also those persons present and named in the minutes of the first meeting.
c. Members Those arti st members who have met a ll the criteria required for
full voting membership and who are in good standing. (Refer to Par. #4 Membership Qualifications)
d. Associate Members Any person who has an interest in the purpose and goals of the
organization may be invited to join as a non-voting, non-exhibiting member. An associate member may be active on committees, act as a chairman and help with the business of the organization.
e. Corporate or Institutional Members Those persons w ho continually contribute generously to the finan
c ial success of the organization's programs. The same voting and exhibiting rights prevail as those for associate members.
f. Honorary Life Members Any member who has given a great amount of time and effort to
further the aims of the o rganization may be awarded such a membership by vote of the members at the annual meeting. There are not dues for this type of membership and the same voting and exhibi tion rights prevail as before honor was bestowed. Past Presidents who have served a full 2 year term (or more) automatically become Honorary Life Members with the same voting and exhibiting rights as when serving as President.

ABOUT THE JUROR · 1989
Dorothy Gillespie is the juror of Awards for the 40th Annual
Exhibition of the Florida Artist Group at the Sarasota Art Associa·
tion. Ms. Gillespie studied with Stanley William Hayter's Atelier
17 in New York and received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from
Caldwell College, Caldwell, New Jersey. An internationally known
painter, sculptor, educator, writer and lecturer, she has had
numerous solo exhibitions from California to Peru. Ms. Gillespie
is active in a variety of artistic disciplines including Solo Happen·
ings and Environments. She has created a 30 minute video tape
documentary for Public Television as well as two sculptural set
designs for the Cleveland Ballet. Her work is in the collections of
the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Albright-Knox
Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York and the State Collection, Frankfurt
Museum, Germany among many others. The Florida Artist Group
is honored to have Dorothy Gillespie as our juror.
JUROR'S STATEMENT
T he responsibility involved in the judging of an important art ex·
hibition need to be examined by the juror in order to clarify his or
her role. So as to do the best job possible I, as juror, try to set some
priorities.
By taking into consideration the viewing public, the sponsoring
organization, the artist entering work, the styles of art entered, the
mediums used in the work, the areas from which the work has been
sent and the purpose of the exhibit itself-looking carefully at all
of these, plus the most important ingredient of an art exhibition
the best work, the most creative work, the most experimental work
along with the professional way in which the works were pre
sented-taking all these into consideration and then letting the
works speak to me by looking at them over and over and over again
and again. By using these procedures I, as the juror, have certainly
given each piece of art very serious consideration.
It was a delight to be a part of this very fine exhibiton, and I want
to congratulate the Florida Artist Group for a job well done on their
40th anniversary.
