C M Y K COVID-19: Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth Port Blair, Oct. 30 Sustenance of day to day life and almost all developmental activities in the Islands are linked with the availability of efficient and uninterrupted shipping services. Presently around 150 vessels, both from the Govt. and Private sectors (ranging from 20 to 15000 GT) ply in the waters around Andaman and Nicobar Islands maintaining the transportation requirements for personnel and essential goods from the Mainland and between the Islands. The availability of credible Ship Repair Facilities including dry docks is essential to ensure uninterrupted shipping services. The operating ships need these facilities to address their day to day defects, satisfactory maintenance of hull, machinery, equipment onboard and also for the periodical/ statutory survey requirements prescribed by the regulatory bodies. Considering the requirements of the present fleet of vessels operating, the existing ship repair and dry dock facilities available in the Islands are inadequate, leading to frequent delays in ship repairs. The long laid up periods for the ships leading to reduced operational availability cause obvious interruptions in maintenance of essential services. The A&N Administration has taken a number of initiatives to mitigate the problem of inadequacy/ augment the ship repair and dry docking facilities in the A&N Islands. The existing graving dock in the Marine Dockyard is being extended by 90 mtrs and also the other ship repair facilities in the Marine Dockyard are being modernized with the Augmentation of ship repair & dry docking facilities in A&N Islands Floating dry dock likely to be positioned at Port Blair soon assistance of M/s Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL). Concurrently, with the efforts to augment the existing Government owned ship repair facilities in the A&N Islands, efforts are also on to augment the dry docking capability through positioning of a suitable Floating Dry Dock (FDD) on PPP basis. The tenders for the same were invited by the Port Management Board (PMB) a few months ago and responses have been received. The offers received have also been evaluated and the proposal is in final stage of approval by the A&N Administration. The sea area for this project has also been identified and earmarked by the PMB. The initial license validity for deployment of the FDD will be for 15 years. Positioning of the proposed Floating Dry GREETINGS (Admiral D K Joshi) PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) Lt.
