A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR DAVE

This year on All Saints’ Sunday (the first Sunday of November), we read the

beatitudes from Matthew 5. It seems somehow appropriate that in the year 2020 we

would remember the saints by reading about the challenges of life. In a year full of

challenges, to hear that God blesses the poor, the grieving, the meek, and the

hungry; that God blesses those who act out of mercy and purity and peace; that God

blesses you when are persecuted, reviled, and spoken against. And it all ends with

the note – “rejoice and be glad…”

We remember those who have walked difficult and confusing paths before. We

remember the names of those who trusted in God’s grace and peace in the midst of

trials and tribulations. And, we remember that we, too, are held by God.

In the midst of the noise of politics and culture, in the face of disease and natural

disasters, we stand with people of faith from all times and places and we confess -

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not

fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the

sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.

The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth

melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. (Psalm 46)

There are many voices trying to disrupt the presence of God; but the one who spoke

creation into being, the one who sent his Son to live out God’s will and salvation for

humanity, the one who claims you in love and grace – this one is present, this one is

our refuge. God is present and at work - let’s live our lives making THAT visible.

A NOTE OF THANKS

I have been blessed to represent First

Lutheran Church as a missionary to Belize.

Thanks to the generosity of our members,

we have received donations for 32 student

scholarships for the 2020 -2021 school

year. My hope was to return to Belize in

August to deliver these scholarships to the

students, but my plans changed when the

airport in Belize delayed its opening, and

planes cancelled flights due to the increased

number of Covid 19 cases.

Checks were sent to the principal of the

school to pay tuition for the students who

began classes on October 1st. The principal

emailed a note with the words “this has

taken a big chunk of the burden off my

shoulders.” Students and families are

struggling to put food on the table, and

many are unable, especially at this time, to

pay for school costs. With the continued

support and generosity of our congregation,

we make a difference in the lives of the

students at Alvin L. Young Nazarene High

School Succotz, Belize.

Everything at the school is for the Glory of

God, to Worship God, and to Honor Country.

I pray I will be able to return to Belize in

January to continue my volunteer service to

this mission and I thank you for your

continued prayers and support.

TECH SCHOOL STUDENTS

SUPPORTED BY THE BELIZE

TEAM

Leslie – chef school

Leslie is the granddaughter of the cook who

regularly served us our meals when we

stayed on the school campus. She grew up

helping in the kitchen and after graduating

from high school, her dream was to attend

cooking school at a technical institute.

Several FLC Belize team members provided

her tuition. In 2019 Leslie cooked for our

team. Now she has graduated and cooks at

a local restaurant. Here is her graduation

photo with Dee and one of Leslie at work!

Sharlone – horticulture school

Sharlone was recommended to us by

Nehru, a lay pastor working with addiction

and struggling families, as a young man

who deserves a chance. Nehru visited him

recently and said, “Very impressed with

Sharlone...he was under a tree busy

studying. He had a neat haircut.” Sharlone

studies horticulture at a technical school

and needs our prayers for his continued

success.

STAFF SUPPORT

Kevin – high school math teacher

Dee and Kevin watch a 4th of July Parade in

2019 when Kevin visited SD. In August

2019 he spoke at FLC. Then Kevin and Dee

drove back to Belize with many items

purchased for the school. Kevin coaches

soccer at the school and teaches math,

industrial design, and tends the livestock.

Kevin also provides free rides to school from

his village. He is a terrific example of a

dedicated teacher who does anything and

everything to help students be successful.

He would like to earn his administrative

degree.

TUITION SUPPORT

Luis Enrique - farmer

Luis has received tuition support from

Belize 2019 team members Waynette and

Orland Geigle. (Waynette is Lon Moeller’s

sister.) They met Luis on the school

campus when he and his sister were selling

handcrafts and slate drawings. They

learned he had a small farm and was

attending college at University of Belize,

Central Farm in San Jose. Luis studies

agriculture and would like to get an MA in

the US. They kept in touch through

FaceBook/Messenger. This year Luis is

attending remotely because of COVID. His

old computer died, so they helped him

purchase a used computer because he was

trying to do his lessons on his phone.

Last year before COVID Luis had gotten a

job at an ag supply store in Belize City to

help with his tuition costs. So he attended

school first time and worked. When COVID

came he lost his job.

Luis raises a variety of plants on his small

farm including sweet peppers, corn, beans,

okra, watermelon and cocoyams. They also

gather firewood from the farm to sell. He

had one cow and a few pigs and is now

trying his luck with chickens.

Luis’s crops sometimes suffer from drought

and high temperatures. This year when a

hurricane skirted the country, the high

winds damaged his corn crop.

Banana leaves shielding watermelon from the hot sun.

A NOTE OF THANKS FROM MS.

LAVERN, PRINCIPAL

Ms. Lavern is the dedicated high school

principal whose vision has transformed the

course offerings. She adds her thanks to

FLC and Dee in this correspondence:

“I am ever so grateful that the group and

Pastor Nyla reached out to the students this

past year. We have gotten some heart-felt

thanks from parents to the sponsor so I am

sure they will be open to the

communication. Ms. Dee, you said that the

sponsors want to reach out to the students

in other ways. please encourage them to

do so. Life is really hard here in Belize for

many people because of the loss of jobs

and livelihood of many families.”

ALVIN L. YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL TECHNICAL PROGRAMS Over the years the Belize Team has helped to develop technical classes at Alvin L. Young

High School in Succotz, Belize. Dr. Lon Moeller and Ag students from SDSU helped establish

an Ag program there with high school students planting and selling vegetables. They also

raise turkeys, sheep, ducks, and chickens. With the donation of a chicken plucker by FLC

friends, they butcher chickens twice a year and then prepare a Bar-B-Q chicken fundraiser.

Students, families, and community members purchase a lunch with proceeds used for school

needs, such as an air conditioner for the computer lab. This photo shows last year’s students

at work on the Bar-B-Q fundraiser.

This school year has been very challenging for the school and students with classes being

held on-line. School staff are now also tending the plants. The school caretaker and male

teachers are raising the chickens and have prepared for their first Bar-B-Q sale.

The other two technical classes have been suspended for this semester. Dee Shanley has

been a volunteer sewing teacher for the past two years. She hopes she will be able to

return for second semester in January 2021.

GRAPHIC DESIGN WORK

Last spring FLC member Jean Gentry helped the computer teacher develop a graphics design

course. These photos show her working with students. Sewing and graphics design

students love to work together to create projects to sell with proceeds going to help fund

school needs.

MEET MADISON MCCABE, OUR NEW YOUTH DIRECTOR

Hey there! My name is Madison McCabe, my pronouns are

they/them/theirs. I am the new Youth Director here at First

Lutheran. Since we haven’t had the chance to meet in

person, I thought I would let y’all in on a bit of my life. I

originally hale from the Decorah area, in northeast Iowa,

where I grew up on a farm with four siblings and lots of

animals. During my college time, I headed down south to

Phoenix, Arizona for schooling and in the summers I worked

at Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in Montana. In the fall of

2019, I made my way to Manchester, England. I was lucky

enough to be part of a program organized by the ELCA

Churchwide office called Yong Adults in Global Mission. While

in Manchester I work as a Parish Assistant at an Anglican

Catholic church. Surprisingly, even after my time in England,

American football is still my sport of choice; you will find me

rooting for the Minnesota Vikings through every season.

After moving around so drastically in the last few years I am

excited to become rooted in the community of Brookings!

Thank you for the warm welcome in this season of oddity, I

look forward to the day I can greet you all in person!
