TODAY! Special Liturgy for the Sick

There will be a special Liturgy of the Anointing of the Sick today at Notre Dame Church, on West 114th Street at Morningside Avenue, for all who are unwell in body, mind or spirit. Our local Cluster of Churches is sponsoring this event, which will include: (1) 2:00 PM Confessions, (2) 2:30 PM Liturgy (Prayers, Scripture and Anointing) (3) a small reception. We need to know how many people will attend from our parish, so if you want to go – and we hope you will – you (or your caretakers) should call the rectory (212) 787-0634) ASAP. Each family should also arrange their own transportation.

At the beginning of the “Year of Grace 2016” a bright yellow leaflet appeared as a Bulletin Insert: When Someone Asks You #1: Facts Every Catholic Should Know. It was very popular and helped many parishioners review and/or expand our knowledge of the Catholic Faith. Well, today you see before you a blue leaflet, entitled, When Someone Asks You #2: Explanations Catholics Should Know. We hope you find it even more appealing. Remember to pass it along to your relatives and friends who perhaps no longer practice their Catholicism on a regular basis. Who knows, it may be just the right “medicine to bring about a cure” and we’ll all be the richer for their return to active participation in the Faith?

“Spiritual Exercises”

The 2016 Holy Trinity Lenten Mission will be preached by Jesuit Father Patrick Ryan, our Sunday associate priest. He is the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English Language and Literature at Fordham, and a PhD in comparative history of religion from Harvard University (with a specialization in Arabic and Islamic Studies). For about half of his life he worked in West Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Ghana. He has had faculty and administrative appointments at the University of Ghana, and Hekima College in Kenya, and the Gregorian University in Rome. He served as the first President of Loyola Jesuit College, a secondary school in Abuja, Nigeria. Each night, Sunday through Wednesday, March 13th-16th, Father Ryan will help us think about, and use, “spiritual exercises.” Sounds interesting? Plan on coming to one or all four nights! * * * * * * * *

So, How Are You Going to Grow This Lent? Weed out Bad; Plant Good!

All right you’ve got 40 days to be a better Christian. Set your sights high, and get going! If you have chosen to “give up” something for your Lent this year, you are in excellent company. BUT, how about improving what you are already doing as “a good Catholic”: a little more prayer, a little less food and a whole lot more charity. Think about it. Lent can be very invigorating, like a good physical or mental “workout.” Here we go! * * * * * * * *

“‘Give Up’ Indifference for Lent” Describing the phenomenon he calls “the globalization of indifference,” Pope Francis says, “whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades … We end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s respon-sibility and not our own.”

Happy Saint Valentine’s Day! Insert that title, and it becomes sacrificial [Christian] love. Do it; be it for others. Happy Lent! You can have a cheerful Lent, you know. Really! It simply means focusing on and practically improving your Christian love. God bless your efforts at this kind of love, which eclipses all the others!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Moses discusses the power God has displayed in freeing his people and leading them to a rich land. They should make offerings to God to show their gratitude. Second Reading: Romans 10:8-13 Paul tells us that if we proclaim, "Jesus is Lord" and truly believe that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days, then Satan appeared to him and tempted him to turn stone into bread. After Jesus refused, Satan promised him great powers if Jesus would worship him. Jesus replied that he would worship God and no one else. Then Satan tried to persuade Jesus to put God to the test, but again Jesus resisted his temptation.

In today’s Gospel, that same Spirit tests Jesus, subjecting the divine Son to a completely human experience: temptation. Like Israel, repeatedly called ‘God’s son’ in the Old Testament, Jesus is led into the desert. For Jesus’ contem-poraries, the wilderness served a dual purpose: there one might encounter temptation; there one might encounter God. In his desert experience, Jesus too undergoes testing, facing subtle but repeated temptation. He has been assured of divine approval, favor, and presence. Should he use his status as ‘beloved Son’ to his own advantage? Go ahead, the tempter seems to say … amaze others with your abilities!” – At Home with the Word
