START LIVING! Our modern culture is very much future oriented. Planning is a key word in our vocabulary. We plan everything. We plan our vacation, our budgets, number and spacing of our children, our retirement. Some parents begin saving for their child's college education from the day their child is born. Some workers begin planning their retirement from the very first day of work. We have now that special calendar called planner, which divides the month into empty squares into which we can write our schedule of ap- pointments, meetings, and things to do. Amazing! But, too much planning can make us forget the present. A person can make it a habit of living en- tirely in the future and not being aware of what is happening in the here and now; the beauty and its meaning. Then it becomes a catastrophe as we miss the sacramental beauty and grace that the present can offer. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus insists on the need to be awake and pre- pared for His coming. No doubt, He is referring here to His public coming at the end of time, as well as to His private coming for each one of us at the end of our lives. But the best way to be prepared for that final coming is to be spiritually awake at all times; since we can die at any time and His sec- ond coming can also happen anytime, sooner than we expect. And so, we are back to the importance of living in the present and of meeting Him al- ready in the here and now moment. The best way to prepare for the future is to live in the present as best as we can. Advent is a time to open ourselves more and more to the action of God in our lives. For God is always there, trying to make us, little by little, a loving person. That is His whole purpose in His dealings with us. His very pres- ence makes us ready anytime for His coming.
