3 - Abstract Diverse types of prototypes today are created with 3D printers and 3D scanners, technology related to the additive manufacturing area that grows substantially. Another practice of prototyping involves CNC mill machines that, different from the 3D printers, work with subtracting material procedures. This paper is focused to explore the 3D printing & scanning technology as well as the CNC mill machining activity in the experience of creating a human knee prototype to be used in the medicine field of study as a didactic material. Results such as material and machining costs, measurements, and finishing are to be analyzed and compared as a matter of the type of plastic used in creating the prototype and the machines used in scanning activities as well.

4- Goals and Objectives To create a knee prototype, using 3D printer and CNC mill. 5- Background Research

Using 3D printer technology people have achieving results never found before. Based on this, the research will address this issue and create a knee prototype using this kind of technology. Prototypes are important to portray objects in which have a hard visualization and sometimes make it easy to understand. In addition, the standard commercially available marketed knee prototype sometimes might not be financially available for medicine students or orthopedists. The cost of a modern knee prototype is very expensive because of the high technology used in this device. Its costs depend from type to type. Therefore, our research are trying to reduce prices by using cheaper plastics, such as Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polylactic Acid (PLA) using 3D printing. Nowadays, a 3D printing is being used to replace the usage of expensive methods to produce models as a modern knee prototype. Thus, this research is based on recreate a knee joint to medicine students in order to acquire a better understanding of the knee system during their classes and for orthopedists illustrate to their patients in an easier way such as create prostheses to them. 6- Methods/Facilities used to Conduct Research

We are going to use some software. As pro- engineer and SolidWorks for developing a model and analyze which prototype has greater cost efficiency based on Minitab analysis and some Pareto charts. In addition, for the manufacturing 3D printer and CNC mill will be used. 7- Expected Results & Conclusions We expect to get a knee joint pretty similar as the standard commercial with a less cost and a better precision as we can reach with a 3D printer and CNC mill. 8- (a) What Labs are being used? Rapid Prototyping Lab (3D Printing, 3D Scanning, CNC Mill etc. & Software Packages being used) Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Lab (CMM) Computer Lab

9- Progress Made during the First 2 Weeks:

We have decided the idea and researched about different ways of making a knee prototype using 3D printing.
