Travis FlemingSenior Pastor

From Pastor Travis...

Easter Sunday was an amazing day! It was extra special to see six of our Next Gen Ministry students baptized! We had over 1100 people on our campus for Easter worship. Thank you to our staff, our deacons, our childcare volunteers, and our guest services greeters that worked so hard to serve the Lord.

Furthermore, thank you for investing and inviting people! I met one young couple that one of our church members met in the checkout line at Food Lion. She invited the young lady, and she and her boyfriend came to our 8:30 service on Easter! They are looking for a home church.

Additionally, I want to thank everyone that came out to our “Marriage Matters!” conference with Dr. Danny Akin. I trust you enjoyed hearing him preach on Sunday morning as well. Thank you to our lay leaders that volunteered to help make our weekend a great time for our couples, and we want to thank Ms. Savanna and all of our

childcare volunteers that helped minister to our kiddos!

Finally, I want to leave you with a few upcoming events that are right around the corner for us as a church family.

· Nashville Rescue Mission: Would you like to serve the “least of these” on Friday May 3, at the Nashville Rescue Mission? Our FBCG bus will leave our parking lot at 3:30 PM, and our team will help serve dinner to the men. Then, at 6:30 PM, our team will minister to the men in their “Coffee Shop” hour. Please e-mail Pastor Nick if you would like to serve.

· Joshua Men’s Fish Fry/Shrimp Boil: Invite someone to come with you to our next Joshua Men’s Event on Saturday, May 4, with some incredible food, fellowship, and a great night hearing from LifeWay’s acting CEO, Dr. Brad Waggoner. We will start eating at 5 PM in the fellowship hall, and Dr. Waggoner will begin speaking in the sanctuary at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $10.00 for the event.

· Teacher Appreciation Day: We want you, School Teachers, Administrators, Bus Drivers, Teachers’ Aides and anyone that helps with our schools, whether retired or currently serving, to come to our 2nd Annual Teacher Appreciation Day on Sunday, May 5, at 9:45 AM in our Fellowship Hall. We’ll have a breakfast and a time of hearing from some of First Baptist Gallatin’s own educators.

· Ladies’ Breakfast: We need all of our women to come out for a great time of fellowship around the tables in the fellowship hall on Saturday, May 11. Our men will serve you breakfast beginning at 8 AM until 10:30 AM.

· Haiti Missions Yard Sale: Do you have some items that you would like to donate for our Haiti Missions Fundraiser? The sale will take place from 7 AM till 4 PM on Saturday, May 11. If you have anything you would like to drop off, we will have another drop off day on Saturday, May 4, from 10 AM-2 PM; Sunday May 5, from 12-1PM; and Friday, May 10, at 5-6 PM at our Student Ministry Center. The team will sell baby clothing but no children’s or adult size items.

Grace and peace,

Our Weeks Ahead

Savanna EvansChildren’s Minister

From Savanna...

We all have that one weird thing in our lives that we are irrationally afraid of. I remember when I was in fourth grade my teacher was afraid to touch cotton balls and the other teachers in our school would constantly put them in her desk drawers and such – it was funny for us students to watch her react to those pranks. Now, since I’m the writer of this article I’m going to be vul-nerable and tell you what my irrational fear is. For me, growing up I was afraid of Ronald McDonald. I wasn’t terrified or anything, but he gave me the creeps and to be honest he still does a little bit. And see, I grew up in the nineties when he was McDonalds’ major marketing scheme. He was plastered on drive thru windows and happy meal bags…I’m telling you he was everywhere.

The truth is, we all have things that we fear in life. In my time as a kids minister I’ve witnessed a common fear in many parents and family members of my kid-dos – and that is fear to talk to them about salvation. Now please hear me – I get it. It’s a huge deal. But I’m also here to help you – because even though I’d love nothing more than to be with every kid that comes to church when they accept Christ, it’s impossible and really it should be their parents that have that experi-ence with them. But I’ve found that many parents feel like they are “not qualified” to have the conversation.

So, let’s get qualified! I have some pointers to help drive the conversation for you.

1. Do NOT ask yes or no questions. “Do you want to go to heaven?” –every kid will say yes to this question certainly. But we must make sure they know why they need to go to heaven. How do they get to Heaven? Etc. Instead, ask open ended questions like “Why do you want to be baptized?” or “Why do you need Jesus as your Savior?”

2. Make sure they know and can communicate what sin is. You can’t be saved from sin, if you have no idea what sin is or how it affects you. Most the time kids will say “it’s the bad stuff I do” – and while this is true they need to be able to also communicate that sin separates us from God (which is why we need Jesus!)

3. Don’t expect results right away. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten 45 minutes into a counseling session with a kid that’s as ready as ever – and they back out. Kids think differently from adults. Sometimes they just aren’t ready and that is OKAY. They are not going to “miss their chance” or never bring it up again. On average a child will bring it up 5-7 times before they are ready to pray.

4. Make sure they know the difference between praying to accept Christ and baptism. Kids get really hung up on getting baptized. It makes sense be-cause it’s an experience that they can see and be a physical part of. But we must make sure that they understand it has nothing to do with their salvation – they first need a relationship with Jesus.
