FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE
CALLER No. 13 Vol. 13 ~ July 11, 2017
From the Preacherman…. “Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations. I am exalted in the earth.” Of all the verses in the Bible, of all the places I preach from and talk about and think on, this place in Psalm 46 is among the most treasured in all of Scripture to me. I love the entire psalm, its appreciation of life through dark, difficult times, while God is at work in the midst of things, sometimes seen, sometimes not. But that quote, in verse 10, is among the most deeply embedded in my soul.
I have sometimes wondered why. The psalmist speaks of the earth changing, mountains shaking, waters roaring and mountains trembling, but most of my life is quieter and less formidable than that. In the psalm the nations are in an uproar and kingdoms are tottering, but I have kids in college, homework is due for the 8th grader and there are high school games to get to. I have to wonder if the psalm really matches up to my life, if it really speaks to my existence at all.
But the psalmist asks me to do something that is rare and unusual, something that really only other Christians ask of me: to be still. I have to admit that this is among the oddest and strangest things the Bible asks of me. Just to be still. To know that God is God and I am not. Of all the things in the world that I do, of all the important, critical, seemingly crucial aspects of my life, the most important thing I do every week might be the minute or so of silence we share before the pastoral prayer each Sunday. Just to be still together is shocking and unusual, but after a while, after my own self-‐importance begins to fade away, after the shedding of my critical tasks, the only thing I really have to do, every day of my life, is “Be still and know that I am God.” Someone other than me is God.
However long that takes, whenever that happens to me, I find a sense of thanksgiving that overwhelms. I don’t mean that I understand things better or know how to act or what to do. I might or I might not. But I do know who is God and who is not. And who is not, is me.
If I get down to the core of things, down to where life is really lived, this psalm and this verse are really where I live and move and have my being, as Paul says. I don’t know where you live, but I know a place where you can hang out a while to see what it’s like. It is quiet there, and nobody but God is in charge. It can be scary to trust, but in the end, nothing else really matters. Be still and know. Peace….Chris
Reaching Ringers The music ministry is hoping to restart our handbell program in the fall. The bells need to be refurbished after the fire at a sizeable expense. Before we ship them off, we want to know that there is reasonable interest and enough players to justify that expenditure. Prospective ringers 5th grade through adult please see Mike Tichenor or contact the Church Office. Children & Youth Sunday School Request Teaching a children or youth Sunday school class is a wonderful way to connect with our youngest members. In the coming months, volunteers are needed to teach Sunday school classes. Volunteers are asked to teach four months at a time. The openings are for September through December 2017, January 2018 through April 2018, and May through August 2018. The age groups are Preschool – Kindergarten, 1st -‐ 3rd Grades, 4th – 5th Grades, 6th -‐ 8th Grades, and 9th -‐ 12th Grades. Please contact Pastor Cheryl if you are interested in volunteering.
Welcome New Members!
On July 2, we welcomed two new members into our Church family,
Laura Green, who lives at 4621 Barrington Place and her sister, Linda Green, who lives at 4609 Barrington Pl. We are glad you are here!
Backpack Ministry – School will be starting soon and it’s time to think about supporting our Backpack Ministry, which provides food each weekend for children at Cravens Elementary School who might otherwise be hungry during the weekend. It costs $150 to support one child’s weekend meals for one school year. If you are able to support one child that would be wonderful; however, all donations are appreciated. Please make checks payable to FCC, write Backpack Ministry in the memo section, and either drop the check in the offering plate or mail to the church at P.O. Box 966, 42302.
A special thank you to Embry Luallen for being a counselor at the Chi Rho camp, Pastor Cheryl for directing CYF camp, and Taylor Mahlinger who worked at Kum-‐Ba-‐Ya during the entire camping season.
Summer Singers! Thanks to all those who have shared special music in our services these past few weeks. We have welcomed Hadley Rouse, Ann Miller, Greg Jones, and David Taylor. We appreciate your warm welcome to each of these. In the weeks to come, we have Wendell Thompson and Friends, the 1st/3rd Quartet, some of our Sunday School Singers, and Kennedy Jones. Watch for announcements regarding the resumption of choir rehearsals. See you Sunday, Mike Tichenor
