Looking Ahead With Expectat ion!
The older I get, the faster
time flies. Or, at least it feels that
way. We are already in the middle
of the summer of 2018. That also
means we are already making
plans for 2019! Hard to believe!
One of the hardest, yet
most rewarding, jobs of a pastor is
planning ahead and trying to chart
a course for the future. And when
I am doing that, I have to disre-
gard what you and I want, and,
instead, I have to continually ask
one question and guide us all to
ask that same question together:
What does God want?
So as we move into the
latter half of 2018, I want to re-
mind you of a few things that lie
ahead, all of which I have already
talked about. But here I want to
collect them up for you to see and
pray about. Make no mistake,
these are BIG, and as such need us
all to believe God for great things
that lie ahead.
We tend to fall into a pat-
tern of limiting God, of assuming
that what is happening now is all
that will happen. But God calls us
to believe He will do greater
things than we can imagine or
even think to ask (Eph. 3:20)! Do
you want to see God do great
things at FBCS through your
faithfulness to Him?
This year we are working
on three key initiatives that will
take root and grow in the next few
months, so now, just past the mid-
“It is amazing to
watch God do
through us what
we could never
accomplish on
our own. It is
comforting to
know we have a
God who is al-
ways faithful,
desires more for
us than we
could imagine,
and perfectly
capable of doing
the impossible.”
―Richard Blackaby,
The Inspired Leader
mark of the year, I want to give
you an update and encourage your
prayers and participation:
1. Restructuring Upward
Sports. In May Pastor Mike wrote
about it, on Father’s Day I talked
about it, and now I am repeating
it: Upward Sports is a wonderful
ministry, and we love it. Many of
you have poured your hearts and
energy into it, and I am grateful
for that. But in the last five years
we have learned a lot, and what
stands out the most is that we need
the key Commissioners in place
that have always been part of the
model for Upward Sports (that’s
right—Upward Sports is not de-
signed to be a ministry led by one
person). These Commissioners
will be trained and prepared to
provide leadership in various are-
as and serve with Pastor Mike as
part of an effective team to contin-
ue this great ministry at FBCS.
However, the launch of Winter
Basketball is contingent on these
Commissioners being in place.
At the time that I write
this, five of you have stepped up
to serve as Commissioners! Good
for you! That means we need five
more to relaunch Upward Winter
Basketball:
1. Head Commissioner
2. Assistant
3. Ref Commissioner
4. Set Up/Tear Down
5. Coach Commission Visit Pastor Bob’s Blog

So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. "Therefore, brethen, select from among you seven men of good repu-
tation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. "But we will devote our-selves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." Acts 6:2-4
Each family member of FBCS, may nominate up to 7 men for deacon consideration.
This is a list of the men eligible for nomination of deacon. Deacon nominations will be on July 22, following the morning worship service. Please review what the Bible says about deacons,
pray, and come prepared!
how we can best improve our worship environment,
add or adjust for classroom and storage space, and
provide other improvements for aging or worn re-
sources and equipment. As we continue to explore our
options, please be in prayer for everyone involved. At
the July 8 Quarterly Ministry Meeting I will bring you
up-to-date and answer questions you might have.
What can you do?
For all three of these initiatives:
• Pray for those participating.
• Ask God if it is your time to step up and serve.
• Use the iServe form on our web site or send me an
email to help you get plugged into the right place
of service.
• Pray for a fresh move of God and look forward to
the great things that God is going to do!
See you Sunday!
With Love in Christ,
Pastor Bob
Pray about your part in this great ministry. If you
have questions, want to volunteer, or just want more
information, contact Pastor Mike.
2. Revitalizing Wednesday nights for children. I
was delighted to see so many of our children’s min-
istry leaders and workers come for dinner and train-
ing on May 30. As we move toward the Fall, we
will be implementing a new Wednesday night min-
istry for children that will align nicely with the
changes we have already made on Wednesday
nights, such as DiscipleLife for adults. If you re-
member the Sunday Night Live ministry, Wednes-
days will look a lot like that! But, again, we need
volunteers to make it happen! So pray and sign up
for your place in this fun new ministry for kids. For
more information, contact me! To volunteer, use the
iServe form under “Get Involved” on our web site.
Or, if you prefer, we also have a form specifically
designed for this ministry that you can get from
Nancy in the church office.
3. Renovations and updates to the Family Life
Center and other areas. We are still in the early
stages of prayer and study for Strategy 2019. Three
different teams have been gathering information on

Worship Care We are in urgent need of Worship Care volunteers. We
have several slots on the Sunday 11:00 and Wednesday
night schedules which need to be filled. Volunteer just
one hour a month and make a difference in the lives of
these families. Please prayerfully consider whether the
Lord would have you serve in this ministry.

-The Welcome
Committee
In late June, we
returned from our annual
summer youth ministry
camp at Centrifuge, Ridge-
crest. Here are some
things I have observed
over the past 6 years of
taking teens to summer
camps. First, it usually
takes a few days for the
teens to start forming
bonds and relationships
with everyone on the trip.
Most of the time, this is
due to teens placing walls
up in their life. Walls be-
ing defined as a protection
mechanism designed to
keep others out. Walls I
have noticed hinder au-
thenticity, vulnerability
and a willingness to let
others in.
So how do walls
come down at camp? This
question leads to a second
important observation I
have noticed. At camp
teens are surrounded, for
the most part, by other
teens who are desiring
some of the same things in
their relationship with
God. During camp teens
meet together daily, in fact
multiple times throughout
the day, for large group
Bible study, small group
Bible study, personal de-
votions, worship, prayer
and church group time.
When we inject more of
Jesus in our lives daily
through these core habits,
I have noticed that we
tend to grow closer as a
group, as walls come
down and students begin a
process of being authentic,
vulnerable and willing to
let others in. I believe this
truly represents the Acts 2
type of community that
God truly desires from us.
So, what keeps us
from living this way all
the time? From my per-
sonal observations I be-
lieve that many of us, in-
cluding myself, live dis-
tracted lives. Distractions
being anything that keeps
us away from the main
thing which is Jesus.
Martha was so busy trying
to do for Jesus that she
was missing the main
point of being with Jesus,
which is what Mary un-
derstood when she was
laying at Jesus feet. My
prayer for the teens and
for us as a church family
is that we will get busy
being in the presence of
Jesus daily through habits
that will grow us into
Christlikeness individual-
ly and corporately as a
church family. My ques-
tion to you and to myself,
is what do you and I need
to examine and remove
from your and my life,
that is preventing us from
being authentic followers
of Christ?
