Highlands Child Okeford

As sure as what is most sure, sure as that spring primroses Shall new-dapple next year, sure as to-morrow morning, Amongst come-back again things, things with a revival,

things with a recovery . . . (Gerard Manley Hopkins)

As I write the sun is shining outside, just when we were beginning to think it would never come-back-again! And what a difference it makes. Our minds and bodies relax and unfurl along with the primroses, gratefully soaking up the unaccustomed light and warmth. It even begins to seem possible that we might actually take a layer of clothing off!

March is a wonderful month for the imagination. The first glimmer of sunshine and mentally we've already made the transition to spring clothing and drinks in the garden! Then we set foot outside and the bitterly cold wind signals a hasty retreat to the kitchen table and the reliable comfort of a little something hot and buttery. The promise is there however, and we know it's only a matter of days or weeks until our hopes are fulfilled.

With retirement beckoning I'm looking forward to a little 'recovery and revival' of my own. However, as my list of 'Things I want to do when I retire' now stretches to several pages of my notebook, I'm beginning to suspect that retirement is something that needs to be carefully managed if it's not going to end up more arduous than working!

In the meantime there's a lot to do, and a lot to celebrate. With the lengthening days the season of Lent is underway, which we hope

Parish Council

The Parish Council wishes to thank Mr Denis Eadsforth for carrying out the duties of tree officer over the years.

Due to the tree officer resigning a new tree officer is now

required. This role enables people to play an active role in conserving ad enhancing their local trees and woods. The role of the tree officer is to gather information about their local trees, get involved in local tree matters and encourage local practical projects related to the trees and woods. The tree officer would be supported by both the Parish Council and the Tree Officer at North Dorset District Council. If you are interested in this role please contact Mrs Sandra Deary On 01258 459863 or email her at [email protected].

At the next Parish Council meeting to be held on Tuesday 5 March 2013 a presentation will be given by a company who is interested in building homes in Okeford Fitzpaine.

The Government have changed the way Council Tax benefits are given, this has caused a shortfall in funding. The Government have provided a grant towards this shortfall for this year, however it is uncertain if this grant will be available in future years.

At the last Parish Council Meeting on 5 February a decision was taken to donate £750 towards the cost of new computer equipment for the school.

The Development Management Committee of NDDC will be discussing the new development of the former Faccenda factory site at its meeting to be held on Tuesday 26 February 2013.

The reporter was interviewing the town’s oldest woman. “And what do you find is the best thing about being 104?” he asked. “That’s easy,” she said. “No peer pressure.”

Shrove Tuesday in Ash Class at Okeford Fitzpaine Primary School

Yesterday in Ash class we had pancakes

because it was Pancake Day. Georgia and Leah made the pancakes. We had jam pancakes and we also had some with lemon and sugar. Two children were away. Georgia and Leah made the pancakes with Mrs Pike. The children in Year 1 and Reception ate them and so did Mrs Donaldson. I had a lemon and sugar one. It tasted delicious.

NEWS FROM THE PRE-SCHOOL

Firstly, a belated Happy New Year from all at the pre-school. This half term we have welcomed 3 new children and their families to pre-school. They have all settled in really well and are beginning to make new friends. We have enjoyed looking at the different photos of the children’s favourite rooms in the homes, the majority being their own bedroom.

After the half term holiday, we shall be building upon this by

developing the role play area into a bedroom, using the children’s own ideas and suggestions. This will encourage the use of language, develop their skills of working together and build on self-confidence.

With Mother Sunday (10th March just to remind you) Why God made mums These were the answers given by some 7year-olds… Why did God make mothers?

1. She's the only one who knows all the passwords we use online. 2. Mostly to clean the house, I think. 3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers? 1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us. 2. I’ve heard it was some amazing experiment on men that got out of

hand. 3. God made my mum just the same like he made me. He just used

bigger parts. What ingredients are mothers made of?

1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and one part of mean.

2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.

3. They have a lot more hair than dads, are softer to hug, and wear woolly jumpers. Why did God give you to your mother, and not to some other mum?

1. We're related. 2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other kids’ mums like me. 3. Other mums wouldn’t understand about me being afraid in the dark.

What kind of little girl was your mum? 1. My mum has always been my mum and none of that other stuff. 2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty

bossy. 3. They say she used to be nice.

What did your mum need to know about your dad before she married him?

1. His last name. 2. She had to know his background, like has he put anything too

disgusting on Facebook? 3. She needed to check out his bank account, to make sure he could

buy her clothes.

18

Young and old A baby-sitter is a teenager acting like an adult, while the adults are out acting like teenagers.

Why did your mum marry your dad? 1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mum eats a

lot. 2. She got too old to do anything else with him. 3. My grandma says that no one will ever know.

Who's the boss at your house? 1. Dad is, because mum says so. She just helps by reminding him what

to do each day. 2. Mum. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the

bed. 3. Dad was, until Mum found what he had written on Facebook about

Granny. What's the difference between mums & dads?

1. Mums work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.

2. Mums know how to talk to teachers without scaring them. 3. Dads are taller and stronger, but they panic when the dishwasher

overflows. What does your mum do in her spare time?

1. She takes my brother to football and my sister to violin lessons. 2. To hear her tell it, it’s like she pays bills all day long. 3. I think that must happen during the night, because then she just lies

there and sleeps. What would it take to make your mum perfect?

1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue. 3. She would understand why the dog needs to sleep with me at night.

If you could change one thing about your mum, what would it be? 1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid

of that. 2. I'd make my mum smarter. Then she would know it was my sister

who did it and not me. 3. She’d be more relaxed about me not doing my homework.

Plague of silent cold calls

You know the scenario: you are right in the middle of something, and the phone rings. You drop what you are doing, and pick it up. Then – nothing. Silence. You have just joined nearly half of the UK population in being the recipient of a silent call.

What is worrying is that the figures have nearly doubled since 2011.

Ofcom warns that such calls, usually made by automated dialing systems at call centres, are a growing problem that not only annoys people but can also make them anxious. The dialing systems work by phoning several numbers at once, although the call will go through only to the first person to pick up.

And even if you do hear a voice, it can still be incredibly intrusive: 71

per cent of landline users last year reported a live marketing call, while 63 percent received a record marketing message. None of us want it; but no one knows how to stop it.

Spring Greens

Come Spring I really fancy something green and fresh. My favourite is Purple Sprouting Broccoli, but Sprout tops will do just as well. My old Mum always said “Eat your greens, they clear the blood” She was no doubt repeating what generations of mothers had said over the years.

If you have either in the garden just pick, rinse and dunk them in salted boiling water for a very short time or alternatively steam them until just tender and serve with a little butter. The stalks are good so don’t be too eager with the knife in trimming. If you have to buy them just trim as necessary, rinse and refresh in very cold water before use. They go well with any thing, even dare I say, ‘Horse Burgers’.

Purple or White Sprouting White Sprouting is more delicate.

Cook in salted water or steam until just tender, drain well Serve with a little melted butter and lemon juice, season to taste. Toasted chopped nuts, almond or hazel are a tasty addition.

Blanch in boiling water for a few minutes until tender, drain, refresh in cold water, then griddle until slightly charred. Serve with hollandaise sauce and/or a poached egg.

Blanch and drain, then fry in a little olive oil, with chilli and garlic and toss through pasta.

Blanch and drain as above. Heat in a pan some olive oil and sesame oil, fry chopped garlic (more or less depending, on your preference, for 2-3 mins. Tip in broccoli and fry for further 2-3 mins, serve very hot with sesame seeds sprinkled over.

Spring Greens and Sprout tops

Wash and trim the greens, if very young and tender, leaves can be more or less whole but if older and larger I remove the coarsest stems and shred. Cook in boiling salted water until just tender, drain well and toss in melted butter and sprinkle with grated nutmeg or black pepper. Alternatively toss in a little single cream and sprinkle with grated nutmeg.

Pork with Spring Greens

4 boneless pork loin streaks. 2 tblsp olive oil, 2 garlic cloves crushed, good pinch dried chilli flakes, 140g shredded spring greens, 410g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed.

Season the pork and fry in a deep frying pan (big enough to take the greens later) in olive oil, cook over medium heat for 3-4 mins on each side until golden brown. Remove and keep hot.

Page 23: FIPPENNY NEWS - WordPress.com · later, a Bouncy Castle for the children, stalls, Car Boot area £6 (no need to book), refreshments, ice cream and lots more. IF YOU CAN HELP US OUT

23

Put garlic and chilli flakes into the pan and cook for about 30 seconds until sizzling but not browned, pour in 5 tables water and toss in the greens. Simmer for 4-5 mins until the greens are wilted. Stir in the chickpeas and any juices from the meat and continue stirring until everything is hot Pile the greens onto hot plates, top with pork and pour over any remaining juices. I have not tried this but intend to SAP. Err on the side of caution with chilli flakes.

Pak Choi. We see a lot of this about now You could do this the same way as the sprouting broccoli but take stalks off the leaves and cook them for two or three minutes longer. Steak, Chilli and Greens

Chilli Dressing: 4 tbsp caster sugar, 5 fl oz wine vinegar, 3 red chillies, seeded and finely chopped.

Place sugar and vinegar in a small pan over low heat, stir gently with handle of a wooden spoon until sugar is dissolved. Carefully add chilli and cook for 1 min. Remove from heat and reserve.

Steak: 10 oz sirloin streak, freshly ground black pepper, knob of butter, 2 pak choi, halved lengthways. Season the sirloin generously with black pepper. Place a thick heavy frying pan on heat and let it get very hot. When searing hot, place steak in pan and leave for 1 min, do not move it around the pan. After 1 min carefully turn with some tongs and leave for another min. Reduce heat and turn once more, add the knob of butter and cook for further 30 seconds. Turn for 1 last time , add 5tbsn water to pan along with the pak choi. Cover with lid and allow to steam for a few minutes or until the pak choi has softened. Remove steak with tongs, and place on a board. Prepare 3 plates with a bed of pak choi. Slice up the steak into ½ inch strips and place on top of the pak choi. Spoon cooking liquid over the strips, then finish off with the chilli dressing.

News from SturQuest – The Community Partnership for the Sturminster Newton Area

Following the cancellation of several South West Coach services in November last year, it was fantastic to receive news from Service Manager, Lewis Trehar, stating that the former 7, 15 & 109 services will be running as a monthly excursion service during the next couple of months. Reinstatement of a service (although less frequent) to Dorchester, Poole and Salisbury really is good news. Timetable information can be found on the SturQuest website.

Dorset County Council is currently running two consultations with

regards to bus services and community transport. Please take a few minutes to tell Dorset County Council of your transport needs and usage. To take part, visit http://www.dorsetforyou.com/busconsultation or, collect a paper copy from the SturQuest Community Office.

A new “Friends” group for the Stour View Day Centre plans to form in

the forthcoming months, and hopefully, with your help, we can gather enough interested people together to make it happen. Contact Stephen Hopcroft, the centre manager, on 01258 473152 for further information.

To contact the SturQuest Community Office, telephone 01258 471456,

email [email protected] or visit the SturQuest website at www.stur.org.uk.

The danger lurking in your child’s mobile Around 1.2 million children have looked at violent or pornographic

websites on their mobile phones, according to a recent study. Children as young as eight use their smartphones to browse illicit content, because more than half of all children do not have any security settings on their telephones; their parents seem oblivious to the risks.

The study, conducted by YouGov for Carphone Warehouse, found also that nearly a fifth of all children have either been bullied, or else bullied others, through their phones. They commonly send or receive unwanted and sometimes threatening messages. 38 per cent of children now also access social networking sites on their phones, which can also be a minefield.

DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM

Illustrated Talk at Dorset County Museum Undiscovered Caucasus: Art, Archaeology and Architecture in Georgia by

Roger Peers Wednesday 20 March at 7.30pm

Imagine an undiscovered pocket of medieval Europe. Not some over-sanitised over-run enclave tucked away in the Alps, but situated in far-off mountains somewhere to the east of Turkey! A place where one can come across a stupendous Romanesque cathedral in the middle of nowhere; no running the gauntlet of car parks and tour coaches, gift shops and cafes, nothing more than sheep grazing in fields that run up to the walls. A magnificently rich heritage of churches, monasteries and frescoes, of spectacular ruined castles perched on mountain crags and walled towns all set against the majestic backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains.

Georgia is all this and more. Still largely undiscovered, few realise the

astonishing wealth and diversity beyond the capital Tbilisi. A marvellous cluster of many cultures, ancient history, extraordinary medieval dwelling towers, mountain top churches, unique cuisine and breathtaking high mountain villages only approachable by 4x4s.Most of all, Georgia is its people, an ancient people with a sense of tradition, of honour, of value. A people whose appreciation of beauty, poetry and song is legendary and whose warmth and spirit reach out to the visitor. Together with its rich architecture and magnificent landscapes, Georgia is utterly beguiling.

Roger Peers’ illustrated lecture on the undiscovered Caucasus will take

place at Dorset County Museum on Wednesday 20 March at 7.30pm. The talk is free although a donation of £3 is encouraged, and all are welcome. Advance booking is not required.

For further media information please contact: Rachel Cole Dorset County Museum Tel: 01305 262735 or email [email protected]

The craft topic for the Summer Show is ‘Something for a Child’.

Plenty of scope for different materials and skills and something to do while it’s raining. A few funnies......

The best way to garden is to put on a wide brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig. – I think this is the philosophy according to my wife!

Gardening Rule:

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows

On the perils of moving from city to country The Rectory, St. James the Least My dear Nephew Darren

Those parishioners of yours who won millions on the Lottery and moved into this parish have created quite a stir. It was perhaps a little unwise of them to tell everyone the reason why they had become so wealthy. While most of our parishioners also do the Lottery, few would ever admit it in public. (Since your friends arrived, the entire PCC is buying ever more lottery tickets, but from the shop in the NEXT village, to try and keep it secret.)

However, your family still have much to learn about our country ways.

Buying the old Dower House was impressive; and spending a small fortune re-stocking the gardens was certainly commendable. But someone should have told them about cattle grids. It must have been quite a shock for them to wake up one morning and find the thirty sheep from the neighbouring field had wandered in for breakfast.

Their brand new purple Ferrari has certainly brightened up the country

lanes around here. The noise it makes as it roars up behind you quite quickens the pulse. Mrs Beamish had been suffering with low blood pressure for months; she says she is quite cured now. The Colonel, who is all for the community supporting the church, then asked if the new-comers would drive the bishop around on the day he came to do his tour of the parish. The Colonel thought that an open-topped purple Ferrari would make a great bishop-mobile; and the new-comers were so kind to agree. What a shame that they decided to accomplish the several miles of parish lanes in record time: the bishop barely even saw the several farmers that they nearly ran down. His new nickname in this parish is: The Purple Peril.

The new-comers have installed security lighting, which is

understandable. But now I wonder how much sleep they are getting, as the rabbits, foxes, and badgers who live in their grounds keep it flood-lit for much of the night. Meanwhile, the Colonel is grumbling about the effect of light pollution on his young pheasants in the woods nearby.

Spinal Injuries Association Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 17th May 2013

Hold a Fish & Chip supper to help spinal cord injured people live full,

independent lives. SIA will provide a fundraising pack, recipes, invitations, donation envelopes. By inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from your supper. Help the SIA support individuals and families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable paralysed people to lead independent lives.

For information/fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071

But these little inconveniences apart, I am sure they will soon feel at home. I feel confident that by the third generation, they will be properly settled in.

Your loving uncle, Eustace

Hereafter The minister came to see me the other day. He said that at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told him, "Oh, I do it all the time. No matter where I am - in the bedroom, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement - I ask myself, 'Now, what am I here after?'" Attitude I said I have a can-do attitude...I never said I had a will-do attitude.

Sewing & Craft Group We are a group of friends and neighbours who meet together once a month at the home of one member to work together (and chat and drink tea). The idea is to help each other with craft problems, e.g. help to turn up hems, sort out knitting patterns etc. Someone good at patchwork will help another who wishes to start, or an experienced dressmaker will help a novice achieve a better fitting garment.

We meet on the third Monday of each month, The next meeting is on Monday 18th March, 2.30pm at Littlefield, Darknoll Lane, the home of Jill Goatman.

If you would like to join us or would be interested to

hear a little more before making up your mind please ring me, Jane Tapping on 01258 860095 or e mail me at [email protected].

Dorset Wildlife Trust – North Dorset Group When fire devastated Upton Heath last June almost one third of this

special habitat was left scorched and blackened. Surviving reptiles were left vulnerable to predators but volunteers came in their hundreds from far afield to help in the rescue effort of lizards, snakes, newts and toads.

Eight months on, how is the heath and its special inhabitants, like the rare sand lizard which is confined to small areas of sandy heaths in Dorset, Hampshire and South Lancashire, faring? Nigel Brooks, Dorset Wildlife Trust Warden at Upton Heath will give a detailed update in his illustrated talk ‘Sand Lizards After the Fire’ Wed, 20th March, 7.30pm Fontmell Magna V H. Open to non-members, £2. Children free.

A couple of weeks ago I was absolutely delighted to see a Barn Owl

flying over the field at the bottom of New Cross. I have not seen one for years. DWT are always eager to hear of any wildlife sightings so I have phoned the Trust to pass on this good news
