From the Rector Dear Friends
Are you working too hard? Or, perhaps I should put it another way, are you too busy? If so, you may be in need of a rest and perhaps your thoughts are, even now, turning towards planning for your holidays and some ‘time out’.
Although we shouldn’t read it literally, the Bible gives us a story of
creation (two stories, in fact, but that’s another matter!) which includes the fact that in the end, on the seventh day, God rested. Hence we have the idea of the Sabbath and, for a long time, in the Christian tradition, people took Sundays as a day of rest. (Many also went to church then, of course; some still do!). These days, many more people are working on Sundays, some rarely having an opportunity for a proper rest and break from the demands of the working week. We all know it’s not good for us, but somehow we can’t get off the treadmill.
With our lives being as busy as they are, rest is increasingly important
for our wellbeing. Having rest enables us to refresh ourselves in body, mind and spirit. It’s a kind of renewal on all levels of who we are. We might manage this through a holiday, or at least the odd day off. The Church has long recognised the value and importance of stillness and si-lence: it is an important part of prayer and worship. The Church also rec-ognises the importance of rest. St Benedict’s Rule, dating from the sixth century and adopted by the majority of monastic communities, emphasis-es balance as a cornerstone of the religious life. St Benedict spoke of the importance of balance between the disciplines of prayer, work and study, but none of these things are possible without rest. For St Benedict moder-ation, not overdoing things was essential. It is a wisdom which few

of us can ignore today; in fact, given the often frenetic lives we lead, it is a wisdom which has a lot of resonance with contemporary living.
It’s sometimes possible to build rest and quiet time into our day, or the week, or even the month. Some people (not all of them intensely reli-gious, I might add) do this as an annual retreat, a time to be quiet and rest, freeing up the mind to listen to God a little more acutely than usual. An-other option, not necessarily an alternative one, is to try to make some time for silence and quiet reflection. I am hopeful that we will soon be able to offer a contemplative prayer group in the Okeford Benefice and this may be helpful for some. If you would be interested in finding out more about this, please get in touch.
However you do it, though, I hope you will find time and space to stop
and rest a while. As you do so, take a moment to remember that God himself took rest after the work of creation: there is no better example to follow. With every blessing Fr Darren

Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School
Dear All,
As we get towards the last half term of this academic year we find a busy few weeks ahead where pupils in different classes have various outings to look forward to. We now have our statutory KS2 testing behind us and all the children were well prepared to take the tests and coped well with the formality of the tests. We have less formal testing in other year groups still to go ahead but once again the children will be well prepared.
Year 6 Trip to Weymouth
During the first week of June our Year 6 children will be attending a residential trip to Weymouth where they stay in a hotel and attend the Outdoor Education Centre daily to take part in such activities as rock climbing, abseiling and kayaking. This trip is always enjoyed by the pupils and is the first step of independence before transferring to High School in September.
Cream Tea Fundraiser
I don’t know if any of you were able to join us for our Cream Tea fundraiser on Thursday the 9th of May but we had a great array of cakes and scones with jam and cream on sale along with soft and hot drinks. The event was run by the children in Year 6 as they wanted to raise some funds towards their Weymouth Trip and also for a young Indian girl whom the school sponsors. We were delighted to have raised £134.60. Well done to the children in Year 6 for all their hard work, especially Jack who was the main organiser.
Reception Children Taster Mornings In June and July we will welcome the children who are due to join us in September into our Reception Class for four ‘taster’ mornings at school. The children will have 2 mornings where they will stay for lunch. This is an opportunity for the children to find out what school is like before they come in September. We still have some spaces in Reception so if you are new to the village or are interested in your children coming to school

DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM Lecture: Bird Migration and the Campaign to stop Illegal
Hunting by Andrew Morgan
Wednesday 26 June 2013 at 7.30pm
BirdLife Malta is a society for the protection of birds and natural habi-tats in Malta. The organisation monitors activity that threatens wild birds, such as illegal hunting and trapping and urban development in conserva-tion areas on the Maltese islands.
This year BirdLife Malta celebrates the 50th anniversary of its cam-paigning, research and conservation work. Founded in January 1962 it is the oldest environmental organisation in Malta.
Malta lies on one of three routes used by birds on their biannual migra-tion between Europe and Africa. There are over 12,000 licensed hunters on the Maltese islands and many will illegally shoot protected birds as there is a large bounty on the rare species.
To help Birdlife Malta stop this tragic waste, Andrew Morgan is giving a lecture, to raise funds and awareness for the campaign which he has been supporting since 2008.
The lecture is free but a donation of £3 is encouraged to cover costs.
Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book.

NEWS FROM THE PRE-SCHOOL
This half term we have been enjoying the wonderful Pre-School
garden, thanks to some dry weather. Let’s hope this continues next half
term. All of the children enjoy having access to the garden and benefit
from investigating and exploring the resources, such as the tools – there
has been a lot of fixing going on!
The older children have been enjoying their weekly visits to the
Primary School, spending the morning with the Reception teacher and
children. It is making the transition from pre-school to “big” school much
less stressful for them and their parents and continues to build on the links
between the two sites.

Okeford Fitzpaine Short Mat Bowls Club
Who are we? We are a group of people who play indoor bowls all year round. What do we do? We meet twice a week to play bowls socially as a club. We also have teams that play competitively in local leagues. (See below) Why not give it a try? We meet at about 7.15pm at the village hall on Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the year. Come along and have a go. We usually have a break for tea, coffee and biscuits and a general chat mid way through the evening. The League matches are over until September, so now is an ideal time to get started.
All playing equipment can be supplied by the club. In the 2012/13 season our teams finished as follows:
We hope to improve on these positions next season.

Disposable barbecues – a fire hazard
In 2012, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service attended 241 cooking related fires; these could have been easily avoided if more people were aware of basic cooking safety. Being aware of the dangers of fire and taking pre-ventative measures could help save the lives of you and your family.
Kate Huelin, Home Safety Manager said: "We would just like to re-
mind the public, especially looking forward to the warmer weather, that disposable barbecues can be a fire hazard. These barbecues should be dealt with and disposed of in the proper manner; they should also be fully extinguished before they are thrown away. Barbecues should not be used near or on public benches or any other potential fuel for a fire." Cooking outdoors is a hazard at this time of year, please remember:
When using a gas barbecue with a gas bottle, always check your gas connections with a leak detecting solution after hooking up a new bottle.
Pay attention to the proximity of flammable materials to your barbecue. We advise you do not cook too closely to combustibles.
When using charcoal, always check to see that there is an ash catcher in place before lighting your barbecue. Hot embers have dropped down underneath a barbecue and start a fire on the shelf or other combus-tible surface below.
Do not attempt to barbecue or use an open fire when it is windy. Hot em-bers blown from a cooking fire can start a heath, woodland or house fire.
Educate your children so they know that they cannot play near a barbe-cue. Running or playing within close proximity to a hot barbecue is an invitation for a serious injury.
Please make sure that the barbecue is completely out before you leave it unattended.
Kate added: “As we approach the summer months, we see a rise in fires where people have left disposable barbecues or even camp fires unattend-ed. These then spread to gorse and heath and can be extremely difficult to fight. If you are using disposable barbecues, please make sure you extin-guish them fully and dispose of them properly.”

Summery Puddings In the seemingly unlikely event that we shall have a
summer I have decided to temp fate with a few ideas for ice cream sweets. You can always eat them in front of the fire.
Only ice cream made with fresh milk/cream is actually labelled Dairy Ice Cream. The rest is made with all sorts of STUFF. Palm oil in particular. Source of this infor-mation, Mary Berry, on TV.
Chocolate Sundae
Layer scoops of Vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream, top with whipped cream and chopped walnuts.
Knickerbocker Glory
Vanilla ice cream alternately layered with peaches and raspberries, topped with whipped cream and pistachio nuts.
Peach Melba
Scoops of vanilla ice cream and sliced peaches are coated with fresh raspberry purée, sweetened with a little caster sugar.
Vanilla
Scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce. Or Scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with a sauce made from melted
chocolate creams blended with a little milk and real cream.
Fruit Sundaes Really these are just selections of fruit, fresh, canned, frozen or bottled,
layered into tall glasses (not essential, just use what bowls you have) with alternate layers of ice cream of what ever flavour you fancy, sauces made
from melted sieve jam or a spoonful of jelly and finally topped with whipped cream. I think you can still get Angel Delight which the kids would probably love. Soda Fountain Toppings Stock Syrup A basic syrup for mixing the sauces. Dissolve 1lb granulated sugar in ½ pt water, stirring over gen-
tle heat until completely dissolved. Then boil up without stirring for 2 mins only. Strain through muslin into a jug, cool, cover with a lid or piece of oil and store in fridge until needed. Should keep for a week or so at least
23
Chocolate Sauce Measure 5 tbspn stock syrup into small pan or basin. Add 4 oz grated
or chopped chocolate. Stand pan or basin in shallow pan of hot water and stir over gentle heat until chocolate is melted and the sauce smooth and glossy. (Add another tbsp of syrup if the sauce seems too thick) Cool un-til tepid before spooning over ice cream.
Fruity Toppings
Measure 4 tbsps stock syrup into a saucepan. Add 4 heaped tbsps Redcurrant Jelly, seedless Raspberry jam (or Melba Sauce) or Apricot jam. Heat until almost boiling. Rub through a fine strainer. Add juice of a small lemon and boil up for 1-2 mins, until sauce hangs in syrupy drops from the spoon. Cool before using.
Most soft fruits can be pureed and with a little added caster sugar can
be used to perk up even very ordinary ice cream. So experiment and give the family a treat. They think that you have been very extravagant and a little fruit goes quite a long way.

And finally...... A husband and his wife were sound asleep when suddenly the phone rang.
The husband picked up the phone and said, "Hello? .....How the heck do I
know? What do I look like, a weatherman?" He then slammed the phone
down and settled into bed.
"Who was that?" asked his wife.
"I don't know. It was some guy who wanted to know if the coast was
clear."
'You never get anything right,' complained the teacher. 'What kind of job
do you think you'll get when you leave school?'
'Well, I want to be the weather girl on TV.’

Beware the church microphone The Rectory St. James the Least
My dear Nephew Darren
Despite my assurances that it was unnecessary, it was kind of you to loan us your sound equipment, so we could experience the advantages of using radio microphones in church. Your assurance that everyone would then be able to hear with absolute clarity seemed to miss the point that everyone does not necessarily want to do so.
I have no doubt that members of your congregation hang on to your
every word, eager to make sure you remain theologically sound, but for us, those who had blissfully slumbered throughout my sermons for the last 30 years found themselves unable to filter out a single syllable.
Colonel Wainwright decided to change the start of his Bible readings
from the customary “Here beginneth..” to “Testing, Testing” before giv-ing the microphone a good biff, which made the verger dash outside to check if yet another mediaeval gargoyle had fallen from the roof. Also, forgetting that microphones pick up asides just as effectively, his own comment to his wife in the front pew “I thought I read that rather well” did nothing for the pride he has always cherished for his humility.
I was also not convinced that the sixteenth century workmen who had
devoted the greater part of their lives reverently carving the Lady Chapel altar had intended it to support an electronic console that would have looked more at home in an aeroplane cockpit.
However, the event which finally decided us against microphones
came about an hour after the service. Several of the choir boys had crept back into the church and decided to improvise a rock concert with their guitars and the mikes turned up full blast. The church exploded in a per-fect cacophony of noise which panicked a horse and rider going by. The horse bolted down the road, which caused two cars to veer violently to avoid it. One car ended up in a pond, the other in a field, having ripped off a great deal of old fencing. Whoever fixed the fencing failed and later that night all 43 cows in the field escaped, and ended up in the Colonel’s
29
flower-filled front garden, where they spent a comfortable night slicing his velvet turf with their sharp cleats, and chomping everything in sight.

This year’s Gardens Open weekend will be held on the 15th and 16th June from 2 – 6 p.m. on both days. The Manor House gardens will be open as well as 20 others in the village. This event takes place biannually to raise funds for St. Peter’s Church.
Cream Teas, homemade cakes, plants and collectables will be on sale in the Tithe Barn.
There will also be an exhibition “The World of the Horse and the Mo-saic”. This will include a display of equestrian paintings and small sculp-tures in the Church and the Manor gardens. For further information please contact Jill at [email protected]. There is also a section showing the achievements of William Fox-Pitt, the Olympics three day event silver medallist, who lives in the village.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Roman Mosaic and another section will explain its significance, it being considered by archaeologists to be the world’s earliest depiction of the head of Christ. Some years ago this image was used by Royal Mail to produce a 37p stamp. Very interestingly the Mosaic, which is now in the British Muse-um, includes Bellerophon riding his winged horse, Pegasus, to slay the two headed monster called Chimera. Admission £5.00 - children free. Free parking & disabled facilities No dogs please. Further information on www.hintonstmary.com
Wimborne Folk Festival The annual folk festival in the Dorset town of Wimborne Minster will
be held over the weekend of 7, 8, 9 June 2013. Wimborne Minster Folk Festival promises three days of 'folk, family
and fun', with the much-loved mix of dance displays, family activities, workshops and stalls returning to the historic minster town's streets.
The concerts at the Allendale Centre will showcase superb live music from artists spanning the current folk spectrum.
This year features a large Children's area on Willow Walk, with pedal boats, zorb balls, free circus skills workshop and much more!
Free craft activities and workshops for all the family will take place at the Community Learning and Resource Centre (CLaRC), a moment's walk from the Minster.
