Footprints in the Sand and Your Digital IdentityRobert Upton’s latest blog can be found on the School website. The following is a taster:

Most of us contribute to a growing portrait of who we are online every day, whether intentionally or otherwise; a portrait that is probably more public than we assume. The explosion of communication through the Internet, particularly with the advent of social networking sites, has catapulted us into a world of seemingly free speech with instant impact. Undoubtedly there are benefits with the new technology, but it also brings with it a darker side.

House Chess Matches

The Yateley Manor Prep Sports Day will be held on Monday 27th June. All children are given the opportunity to compete in six different Sports Day events: a house swimming gala, individual athletics events (either long jump, high jump, hurdles or throwing), a 75m sprint, a house relay shuttle run, a 300m or 600m run and a house tug of war.

As time is tight on the day and in order to ensure that all the year groups have a chance to take part in all the different Sports Day activities, there are a few events which have to be held before Sports Day itself. To make these events as authentic as possible, parents are welcome to come and support the children. The events are as follows: (NB four of these are in the first week back after half term.)

Year 3 Individual Athletics Competition Monday 6th June Periods 3 & 4 10.30 - 11.30am (One from Long Jump, High Jump, Hurdles and Throwing)

Extra Cricket MatchThe next round of the U13 County Cup Cricket Competition will be played against Perrins School on Monday 23rd May at home starting at 2.30pm.

The day got off to a great start in Class 1 with Maisie Rice and her pony Nero being placed fifth in what was their first ever competition. Cameron Ward and his pony Ginger continued in the same vein with a fourth place rosette in Class 2.

We entered a team of four riders in Class 3, the Yateley Manor Steamers made up of Maisie, Cameron, Maisie Jenssen on Nipper and Katie Saunders on Splash. They were awarded a very respectable third place as a team with Katie completing the fastest clear round in the class to take the individual win.

Class 4 saw more success particularly for Maisie Jenssen and Nipper, also new to the competition circuit, who were just pipped at the post by a matter of seconds to scoop up second place individually. Her fast clear round helped secure a team second in the same class.

Then it was the turn of Jodie Saunders and Walter in Class 5 who went clear around the timed section of the course in 27 seconds to bag second place individually and contribute to a team win. This performance was duplicated in Class 6, the last class of the day, when Jodie again rode into individual second place with her team mate Millie Day on Caspar on just four faults contributing to yet another team win for the Yateley Manor and Friends team.

Congratulations to all the ponies and riders for a fantastic team effort, and many thanks to all the parents and friends who came along to support them on the day.

Year 6 enjoyed a trip to the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum as part of their Tudor studies in History. They had the opportunity to take part in an apothecary workshop where they explored how the people in Tudor times would have tried to make themselves better, although when the leeches were brought out the children were less keen to volunteer as patients!

In the Tudor textiles workshop, the children tried carding wool and then spinning it. They realised how much effort went into making clothes and began to understand why most people would only have one set of everything.

Throughout the day the children explored the Tudor buildings at the museum and noticed that the windows did not have glass in them, but had only shutters. They also were able to look at the type of furniture they would have had. Most of the children were rather surprised at the ‘en suite’ in one of the bedrooms; if you are unsure about this, then ask a Year 6 pupil to explain what they saw!

The day was a great success and was an excellent way of bringing the past to life.

Year 6 Visit Weald and Downland Museum

The Nasio Trust which works to transform the lives of vulnerable children and the communities in Western Kenya are collecting old school shoes and trainers to send out to Africa.

Over two billion people suffer from soil-transmitted diseases and parasites, which burrow into children’s toes and causes them real pain and discomfort. Sadly many who are treated quickly become re-infested simply because they do not have shoes to wear,

A collecting box will be available in Manor Court after half term for any donations. Please bring shoes either with their laces knotted together or in plastic bags so that the pairs stay together and drop them into the box.

Many thanks for your support.

Year 1’s Healthy Eating Trip

May Fair continuedand nail painting and, unsurprisingly, lots of excited children queued up to throw wet sponges at the Headmaster and other teachers. The plant stall not only offered magnificent plants to parents, but also filled their hanging baskets to order.

The crowds were well entertained by the Pre-Prep Choir, Junior and Senior Manor Singers, the Wind Band and Orchestra and all drew good crowds with plenty of applause when they performed. Many were enticed by the delicious smells coming from the BBQ which served excellent burgers, hot dogs and, new for this year, freshly cooked onion bhajis. Others found sustenance with delicious homemade cakes at the Tea Tent.

We are very grateful to FYMS for organising such a fantastic event. A lot of hard work from a large number of people goes into planning the May Fair and it was definitely worth it. Thank you also to everyone who helped out on one of the many stalls, food outlets or other activities, to all the families who came along and of course to all the children whose smiles and laughter made the day a great success.

As part of their topic of Healthy Eating Year 1 walked to Waitrose for a tour of the store and a look at different types of food. The children were also introduced to the new traffic light system that they use on their packaging to show how much salt, sugar and saturated fats are in each product. Many of the children are now being extremely helpful with the shopping by pointing this out to their parents! Waitrose staff gave the children a talk on healthy eating and the different types of food we should be eating a lot of. Very kindly, they also gave the children a drink of juice and a biscuit before they set off back to school.

48 Hour RuleParents are reminded that children who are suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting should stay away from school for 48 hours after the last episode.

This year’s exciting post Common Entrance programme for our Year 8 pupils has almost been finalised. Once their exams, which are straight after half term, are over, pupils will be launched into four weeks packed with physical and sporting events, drama, cookery and workshops designed to give them new life skills to take with them on the next stage of their educational journey.

Physical activities include a watersports day at Horseshoe Lake and an action packed Bushcraft Week where they will undertake a variety of adventure and team building activities and, of course, Sports Day.

The group will spend an intense week rehearsing and preparing for a performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night which will be presented to parents on the Friday evening.

Visiting speakers will guide the children through workshops on Drugs and the British Board of Film Classification.

They also have some first aid training, a cookery session and writing stories for a Pre-Prep child. A fun activity evening completes the programme.

In between all these events, Year 8 will be completing their Yateley Manor Award log books to earn their bronze, silver or gold awards.

The Post Common Entrance programme is the culmination of Year 8s’ time at Yateley Manor and complements their hard work academically and within the School community. We look forward to celebrating all that they have achieved at our end of term Prize Giving.
