Die wonder van
n nuwe seisoen
is dat dit ons die
geleentheid gee om
voor te begin!
WELCOME
We have reached the second quarter of the year and as the days go
rushing by so is the change of seasons catching up with us. The
early morning chill in the air confirms that autumn arrived early
this year. We trust that you will enjoy this edition of Compass with
a delicious warm drink.

EXERCISE AND YOUR HEATLH
Exercise and physical activity are good for just about
everyone, including older adults. No matter your health
and physical abilities, you can gain a lot by staying active.
Research shows that exercise and physical activity can help:
Maintain and even improve your physical strength and
fitness
Improve your ability to do the everyday things you want
to do
 Improve your balance
Manage and improve diseases like diabetes, heart
disease, and osteoporosis
Reduce feelings of depression and improve overall well-
being
The key to all of these benefits is youhow fit and active
you are now and how much effort you put into being
physically active. You'll get the most out of being physically
active if you enjoy all 4 types of exercise, stay safe while
exercising, and be sure to eat a healthy diet, too!
page 2
The 4 types of exercise include:
 Strength exercise
 Flexibility exercise
 Balance exercise
 Endurance exercise
To help you be more physically active, the National Institute
on Aging at NIH created Go4Life®, an evidence-based
exercise and physical activity campaign that offers sample
exercises, success stories, and free materials so you can get
ready, start exercising, and keep going to improve your
health and achieve a better quality of life. The interactive
Go4Life website provides free information for individuals,
families and friends, organizations, and health care
professionals.
Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and
social isolation and it can have a serious effect on health.
But there are ways to overcome loneliness, even if you live
alone and find it hard to get out.
Here are ways for you to connect with others and to
become more active again
Smile, even if it feels hard
Grab every chance to smile at others or begin a
conversation for instance with the cashier at the shop or
the person next to you in the GP waiting room. If youre shy
or not sure what to say, try asking people about
themselves.
Invite friends for tea
If youre feeling down and alone, its tempting to think that
no-one wants to visit you. But often, friends, family and
neighbours will appreciate receiving an invitation to come
and spend some time with you.
Keep in touch by phone
Having a chat with a friend or relative over the phone can
be the next best thing to being with them. Ask one of your
children or grandchildren to activate WhatsApp as this is a
very cost effective way to stay in touch with loved ones and
share photos and stories.

Help others
Use the knowledge and experience youve gained over a
lifetime to give something back to your community. Youll
get lots back in return, such as new skills and confidence
and, hopefully, new friends too.
DID YOU KNOW? The Motor Industry Pension Fund has 6 400 retired
members with assets of more than R7 billion. The Fund is
valued annually and is fully funded (able to meet its
liabilities as determined by the Actuary).
Almost R22.5 million is paid as pensions to pensioners
every month.
The Motor Industry Pension Fund often receives
enquiries from pensioners regarding their medical aid
benefits and deductions. As the medical aid, Moto
Health Care, is administered separately from the
Pension Fund we cannot assist with medical aid
enquiries. Their contact telephone number is:
086 1329 800.
Learn to love computers
If your friends and family live far away, a good way to keep
in touch, especially with grandchildren, is by using a
personal computer or tablet (hand held computer). You can
share emails and photos with family and friends, have free
video chats using services such as Skype or Face Time and
make new online friends or reconnect with old friends with
social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter, and website
forums.
A tablet computer can be especially useful if you cant get
around very easily as you can sit with it on your knee or
close to hand and the screen is clear and bright. A sponge
tip stylus pen or speech recognition may help if the touch
screen is difficult for arthritic hands or fingers with poor
circulation.
Get involved in local community activitiesThese will vary according to where you live, but the chances
are youll have access to a singing or walking group, book
clubs, bridge, bingo, quiz nights and faith groups.
Fill your diary
It helps if you plan the week ahead and put things in your
diary to look forward to each day, such as a walk in the park,
going to a local coffee shop, library, sports centre, cinema
or museum.
