RACING ROUND-UPBRITISH AND IRISH MAIDENS

THIS WEEK’S MAIDENS WHO CAUGHT THE EYELeicester is an undulating course, down and then up and levelling out close home, but Newmarket trainers often send decent

juveniles there. It was a Malton raider, however, Richard Fahey’s charge Majestic Sands (Kodiac), who landed the EBF novice over 5f on good ground last Tuesday, beating another debutant in the same ownership, Cool Sphere (Orb), by three quarters of a length. He was well backed and was value for more than the winning distance in all likelihood, as he was green when he hit the front and wandered about. Hopefully he will have learnt a good deal, as both are likely to head for Royal Ascot, with a need to improve to take a hand in something like the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes.

Yarmouth is another favourite venue for debutants and 850,000gs yearling Boccaccio (Dubawi) put up a professional performance in landing an EBF novice stakes over 7f on good to firm ground there, making all. The betting would indicate he is admired in the Charlie Appleby yard, so one imagines he would survive a rise in grade.

The EBF fillies’ maiden over 5f on soft ground at Carlisle on Thursday was not so strong a race, but debutante Exceptional (Dutch Art) overcame a tardy start and only having a small gap to go through to win rather handily. She should defy a penalty at least.

Coase (Zoffany) was second favourite to an odds-on shot in a novice auction over 6f on debut, but Hugo Palmer’s charge came from mid-division to score with plenty in hand by four lengths. He certainly looks a good sort for the Tattersalls auction race in the autumn, but he might aspire to higher goals.

It is a travesty that a master trainer like Edward O’Grady is not bursting at the seams, but he demonstrated, as if he needed to,

again for that to come off. She is certainly quick, presuming the headgear continues to work, but only time will tell whether she has the class.

Second on debut and then sixth at Listed level, Separate (Cable Bay) was odds-on to get the winning bracket and she duly did so without too much fuss in an ordinary fillies’ median auction over 5f on good to firm ground at Lingfield Park on Saturday, beating a previous winner by nearly four lengths. She holds

that he knows how to handle juveniles as well as chasers in an EBF maiden auction over 6f on good to firm at Fairyhouse on Thursday, when his homebred Law Breaker (Lawman) came from off the pace and, despite running somewhat green, get up by a head. He was not fancied in what was an ordinary race by Irish standards, but he should improve plenty and be useful.

Platinum Star (Lope De Vega) looks to have a bright future,

the way he won an EBF maiden over 6f at Leicester last Tuesday

that has had a good record over the years of producing useful

sorts. He was slowly away but soon on terms and only had to

be nudged along to score readily. Although he is out of an

Acclamation mare, he will get further and one could see him

as a sort for the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes or Gr.3 Solario Stakes

down the line. He would be entitled to run in the Listed

Chesham Stakes if Royal Ascot does not come too soon.

The situation was nearly repeated over at Sandown Park in an EBF fillies’ novice over 5f on good to firm went to a 33/1 debutante, Eve Johnson Houghton’s inmate Graceful Magic (Gutaifan). She had the rail to help her, but she too came with a run to nab the front-runner by a length. Again, the form is not exceptional, but the Blewbury handler is never afraid to have a go and there was talk of the Gr.3 Albany Stakes. She would have to come on plenty from this, but she has the pedigree to improve and make her mark.

Michael O’Callaghan meant business with debutante Isabeau (Cable Bay) in the EBF fillies’ maiden over 5f on good ground at Down Royal on Friday, applying blinkers, and she fairly responded, being in the van the whole way and scoring by over a length. He has a plan to put her in the Goffs London Sale with an entry to the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes, though he says she would need to run

different sales-race entries, as well as at Gr.2 level, with the former looking ideal. She may go for the Super Sprint, for which this speed track is good practice, but 6f would suit her.

Between Hills (Hot Streak) had rather a rough passage in the EBF median auction maiden on good to soft ground at Listowel on Sunday, but she battled to beat colts by a neck on her second start. She is possibly not a star, but more should be heard of her.

The EBF maiden over 5f at Nottingham on Sunday was an ordinary contest but, despite getting briefly loose and then being a bit of a lad in the stalls, Al Aakif (Acclamation) behaved perfectly well in the race itself and won handily, looking as if he has a future.

Air Force Jet (Charm Spirit) was long odds-on to follow up on

his second on debut with victory in an EBF maiden over

Navan’s undulating and stiff 5f on good to soft ground. He was

unbalanced by the downward section of the track before the

climb and only got up by a neck. He was described as a baby

and there are still hopes of big pay days in the future. In a

relatively quiet week in this sphere in Ireland, he is the

selection.

Willie McCreery won both maidens for three-year-olds over an extended nine furlongs at Gowran Park yesterday, the EBF fillies’ median auction with debutante Come September (Roderic O’Connor) by a neck, while Up Helly Aa (Galileo) took the boys’ version by over four lengths on his second start. Both are very much regarded as work in progress by the trainer, but more should be heard of them down the line.

Toro Strike (Toronado) really needs 7f now, but the juvenile was still good enough to win a maiden over six on good to firm at Thirsk yesterday, following up on a promising second in a conditions race at Newbury on debut. He looks ready for a rise in grade as well as distance.

Golden Horde (Lethal Force) had also run well on debut at Newbury and followed up with victory, this time in an EBF novice over 5f on good to firm at Windsor, making all and coming clear. He holds sales race entries over six and he looks the sort for them.

Richard Hannon’s two-year-olds are well known for improvement on their first starts and Sun Power (Night Of Thunder) had run well enough in mid-division at York on his first run and was more than good enough to win a novice over 6f at Wolverhampton yesterday evening. It was an ordinary contest, but he should be able to leave this level behind.

RIA AMELIA (Jpn), 2f, Deep Impact – Ria Antonia (Rockport Harbor) O: Silk Racing, B: Northern Racing, T: Mitsumasa Nakauchida

Ria Amelia (Deep Impact) could not have been more impressive on debut. The filly, sent off at 1/5, proved that she deserved all that blind confidence in the first juvenile race of the season on the JRA circuit at Hanshin on Saturday over 1600m. She overcame a slow start and had the race sown up in a matter of strides, scoring by eight lengths from Largehezza (Grandezza). She clocked the final 600m, on ground softened by some rain, in 34.4, slightly faster than the four-year-old Mer De Glace (Rulership) in the Gr.3 Naruo Kinen later on the card.

She is the second foal and the first winner out of Ria Antonia (Rockport Harbor), who posted a 40/1 upset when landing the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. An American racing fairytale, she was purchased for a mere $9,000 by Canadian trainer Ricky Griffith and sold to Ron Paolucci and partners after she landed a maiden against colts at Woodbine. After her top-level win, she failed to score again in nine starts at three, but she was second in the Gr.1 Santa Anita Oaks and Gr.1 Spinster Stakes. Katsumi Yoshida paid $1.9m for her at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, four days after she was fourth in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Ria Antonia’s catalogue page earned a boost from her younger half-brother Cross The Line (Line Of David), a Stakes winner and Gr.3-placed.

Ria Antonia has a yearling colt by Deep Impact, who topped the JRHA Select Foal Sale last season when purchased for ¥290m by Satomi Horse Company. She visited King Kamehameha in 2018.

TAISEI VISION (Jpn), 2c, Turtle Bowl – Somnia (Special Week) O: Seiho Tanaka, B: Northern Farm, T: Masayuki Nishimura ¥18,000,000 JRHA Select Foal Sale by Seiho Tanaka, consigned by Northern Farm

Taisei Vision (Turtle Bowl) did his job like a professional colt in the newcomers’ event over 1400m on Sunday at Hanshin. His dam Somnia (Special Week) won on her debut and was later third in the Listed Hakodate Nisai Stakes at two, but failed to train on. She has produced another JRA winner from two previous foals. The second dam Dreamscape (El Condor Pasa) also delivered the Stakes-placed Cuccagna (Fuji Kiseki) and is a half-sister to the top-class Japanese dirt performer Utopia (Forty Niner), who won the Gr.2 Godolphin Mile in Dubai and the Gr.3 Westchester Handicap in the US.

Somnia has a yearling filly by Rulership and visited Harbinger in 2018.

KAITO RED (Jpn), 2f, Gold Halo – Nishino Madoka (Jungle Pocket) O: Tsuneo Honda, B: Domi Bokujo, T: Yuji Wada ¥3,500,000 Hokkaido Summer Sale by Masao Hayashi, consigned by Domi Bokujo

Kaito Red (Gold Halo) earned double her purchase price when landing the newcomers’ race over 1400m on Saturday at Tokyo. She ran close to the pace and stayed on well, before holding the fast-finishing Boonrod (Kurofune). Her sire is the little known Gold Halo (Sunday Silence), who won five races on the NRA circuit, but has compiled a decent record at stud, with around 300 winners from 415 foals of racing age, topped by the multiple Group scorer Tokei Halo. The dam Nishino Madoka (Jungle Pocket) won a well contested newcomers’ event at Sapporo’s prestigious summer meeting at two, but failed to confirm that form and dropped down to the NRA circuit at four. She added five wins to her CV. Her first two foals are winners and her three-year-old Naimana (Danon Ballade) was second in the Gr.3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes at two and had a tilt at the Gr.1s Satsuki Sho and Japanese Derby, the first two legs of Japanese Triple Crown.

Nishino Madoka has a yearling filly by Smart Falcon and visited Zenno Rob Roy last season.

GOOGOL RAVI (USA), 3c, Declaration Of War – Maltese Googol (Speightstown) O/B: Nagako Fujita, T: Takahisa Tezuka $65,000 RNA Keeneland September Yearling Sale consigned by Greenfield Farm

MAUVETTE (Jpn), 2f, Orfevre – I’m Yours (Falbrav) O: SIlk Racing, B: Northern Farm, T: Kazuo Fujisawa

The favourite Mauvette (Orfevre) missed the break, but proved that she was worth her supporters’ confidence when landing the newcomers’ event for fillies over 1600m on Sunday at Tokyo. Christophe Lemaire asked her to quicken at the 200m pole and she out-sprinted Logi Irish (Heart’s Cry), crossing the line two lengths clear. She covered the final 600m in 33.8 under only a mild ride. Her dam I’m Yours (Falbrav) won the Gr.2 Hochi Hai Fillies’ Revue and was second in the Gr.2 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and third in the Gr.1 Oka Sho. An earner of more than ¥249m, I’m Yours is a half-sister to the useful Tosen Arnica (Meisho Samson), who won five races and just missed her black type when fourth in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

I’m Yours has a yearling colt by the Gr.1 Japanese Derby hero Duramente, purchased for ¥180m by NICKS at the JRHA Select Foal Sale.

SALIOS (Jpn), 2c, Heart’s Cry – Salomina (Lomitas) O: Silk Racing, B: Northern Racing, T: Noriyuki Hori

Silk Racing enjoyed a terrific weekend, landing the Gr.1 Yasuda Kinen with its second choice Indy Champ (Stay Gold) and three of the five newcomers’ events for juveniles. On Sunday at Tokyo, Salios (Heart’s Cry) was as impressive as the fillies Ria Amelia and Mauvette in the race for males over 1600m. The favourite Absolutismo (Daiwa Major) set a slow pace and Salios sprinted home from the back of the pack, clocking the last 600m in 33.1. He is a huge colt (534 kilos), but very balanced and has plenty of ability. His dam Salomina (Lomitas) ran just four times, winning on her debut in June at three before capturing the Gr.3 Hamburger Stuten-Preis and the Gr.1 Preis der Diana. She was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida before the Gr.1 Prix Vermeille, but failed to shine and headed to Japan soon after. She was covered by Deep Impact in her first three seasons and has delivered the four-year-old Salacia, who has been Gr.2-placed and fourth in a Gr.1, and the minor Stakes winner Salonika. Salomina is one of the three Stakes performers delivered by the classy Saldentigerin (Tiger Hill), a Gr.3 scorer and multiple Gr.1-placed. The last of them, the filly Skyfull Sea (Sea The Stars), ran second on Sunday against the colts in the Gr.3 Derby Trial at Baden-Baden and is a lively candidate for the Gr.1 Preis der Diana.

Salomina has a yearling colt by Deep Impact, catalogued as Lot 103 at the JRHA Select Sale, and visited the same sire last season.

Googol Ravi (Declaration Of War) posted a 27/1 upset on his comeback from a six-month layoff in the maiden over 1600m on dirt at Tokyo on Saturday. He is the second foal and the first winner out of Maltese Googol (Speightstown), who scored once in the US. The second dam Superb In Roses (Giant’s Causeway) produced three winners and is a daughter of the very smart Lu Ravi (A P Indy), who won 11 races from three to six, including the Gr.2 Molly Pitcher Handicap and Gr.2 Cotillon Handicap and earned more then $1.8m.

The US-bred filly Wiegenlied (Tiznow) set the pace and stayed on in the dirt maiden over 1400m on Saturday at Hanshin. She is a half-sister to Majestic Warrior (A P Indy), who won the Gr.1 Hopeful Stakes and sired the Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks heroine Princess Of Sylmar before his move in 2016 to Japan. He stands at East Stud for ¥1.8m and has covered a triple-figure book in each season. SAINT LEONARD (Jpn), 3c, Deep Impact – Lily Of The Valley (Galileo) O: Shadai Race Horse, B: Shadai Farm, T: Noriyuki Hori

Saint Leonard (Deep Impact), placed on all of his four previous starts, finally found a well-deserved first win in the maiden over 2400m on Sunday at Tokyo. He is a full-brother to Vanquish Run, who won the Gr.2 Aoba Sho and was retired to stud at Hakuba Bokujo after the Gr.1 Japanese Derby. Their dam Lily Of The Valley (Galileo) highlighted her career winning the Gr.1 Prix de l’Opera, defeating her stablemate Stacelita (Monsun), who also made the move to Japan.

Prancealot earns deserved first Graded Stakes successAs turf racing gets back into full swing across America, we

were treated to European-bred success from coast to coast this past Saturday, as many of us found our attention locked

firmly on Epsom Downs and a thrilling Derby. Lady Prancealot kicked off proceedings with her patented deep

home-straight drive to turn the tables on Hostess (Iffraaj), to whom she had previously finished second in the Gr.3 Senorita Stakes last month. The daughter of Sir Prancealot was bred in Ireland by Tally-Ho Stud and is out of the Haatef mare Naqrah. She now joins Madam Dancealot, Beau Recall and Ginger Nut as North American Stakes winners by the sire.

Formerly trained in the UK by David Evans, she was purchased for her current owners by myself and partner David Meah. She remained in Evans’s care for her last start, when she finished fourth in the Hilary Needler Trophy at Beverley, before being exported to the US. Her first two starts in the US were both at Listed Stakes level, and she was runner-up both times before an uneventful Breeders Cup run in the Gr.1 Juvenile Fillies’ Turf rounded out her juvenile year.

As a three-year-old she won an allowance race at Santa Anita in February which served as the ideal prep for a trio of Graded Stakes performances. She finished third in the Gr.3 Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita in April and then returned a month later to be an unlucky second in the Senorita Stakes, before returning to the winner’s circle this past weekend under a masterful ride from Joe Talamo for long time client, trainer Richie Baltas, in the Gr.3 Honeymoon Stakes.

The Southern California handler has become the go-to guy for European imports in recent years, and won the three-year-old colts’ race on the turf the same day with Neptune’s Storm (Stormy Atlantic). He previously trained Europeans like Madam Dancealot, Midnight Crossing, Pantsonfire and Goodyearforroses.

The victory on Saturday at Santa Anita saw Lady Prancealot’s earnings soar to just shy of $220,000, with a career record of three wins, four seconds and two thirds from 13 starts. She will now look to confirm her position as the top three-year-old turf filly in America and will be aimed at main mid-summer goals, the 1m2f Gr.1 Belmont Oaks for $750,000 in July and then the Gr.1 Del Mar Oaks,

worth $300,000 and contested over 1m1f on the Jimmy Durante turf course at Del Mar.

LA FORCE IS STRONGThe action continued in California with La Force winning the Gr.2 Santa Maria Stakes. I previously won the historic race in 2010 with private purchase St Trinians and this year’s running was no less heartfelt by me, as she is owned by former clients and great friends Ro and Ward Williford and Chuck Winner, all of whom I previously trained for, and in true ‘six degrees of separation’ style, she was trained by my former boss Patrick Gallagher.

Saturday’s victory was the first Graded Stakes win for the five-year-old daughter of Power, who had already amassed over $550,000 in career earnings. In 2018 La Force finished second in three consecutive Gr.1 races, the Beholder Mile Stakes, the Clement L Hirsch Stakes and finally the Zenyatta Stakes. The winning owners are no strangers to European-bred runners; Chuck Winner owned the four-time Gr.1 winner Magical Fantasy (Diesis) and Three Degrees (Singspiel), winner of the Gr.2 Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup Handicap, and the Wiliford’s have owned many European-bred horses over the years, including Blue Rhapsody (Cape Cross), the dam of Western Hymn.

DEMARCHELIER REMAINS UNBEATENThe final European to make it to the winner’s circle this weekend came via Belmont Park, where Demarchelier won the Gr.3 Pennine Ridge Stakes on the New York track’s inner turf course, by a neck. The son of Dubawi was purchased for 425,000gns from Tattersalls Book 1 by Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm, from his breeder Newsells Park Stud. The three-year-old is currently undefeated in the US, having won a maiden at Aqueduct last year and a first level allowance race at Keeneland this April.

Last Saturday’s victory was his Graded Stakes debut for trainer Chad Brown under jockey Javier Castellano and accelerated the unbeaten colt’s career earnings to just over $188,000. Demarchelier is out of the Sadlers Wells mare Loveisallyouneed, who in turn is a full-sister to Gr.1 winners Yesterday and Quarter Moon. The possible target race for him now will be the Gr.1 Belmont Derby this summer.
