ZOFFANYRace analysis Even with theabsence of runaway AngleseyStakes winner DunboyneExpress, Sunday’s PhoenixStakes looked a thrillingshowdown between two of theseason’s most promisingjuvenile talents.

In the red corner (almostliterally, as he was bearing thered and green silks of JulieWood) was Strong Suit, theimpressive winner of theCoventry Stakes andrepresenting the red-hotRichard Hannon team, while inthe blue (and orange, runningas he does in the ownership ofMichael Tabor) corner wasZoffany, who had been beateninto sixth in the Coventry buthad won all his other fourstarts, most recently the Group3 Tyros Stakes.

Adding further intrigue toproceedings was the JimBolger-trained Glor Na Mara, who had finished last of fourto Dunboyne Express in theAnglesey on his career debutand sole start but came intothe race with a massivereputation.

Zoffany’s trainer AidanO’Brien went into the Group 1typically mob-handed (he hadsupplied the first three home, along with two also-rans, inlast year’s Phoenix) and it washis Snow Mountain who cutout the early pace, tracked bystablemates Emperor Hadrianand Samuel Morse, with –perhaps surprisingly for a coltwho had finished with aflourish from the rear in theCoventry – Strong Suit racingprominently, along with GlorNa Mara.

Zoffany was settled at therear of the field by Johnny

Murtagh, travelling ominouslywell.

Strong Suit was pushed upto lead over two furlongs fromhome, but the explosive turnof foot he showed at RoyalAscot deserted him and, despite leading briefly at thefurlong pole, he was soonjoined by Glor Na Mara.

But the pair had to give bestto Zoffany, who ran on wellfrom the back of the field toswoop past Glor Na Mara andStrong Suit in the closingstages. He passed the post halfa length in front of Glor NaMara, with Strong Suit a shorthead back in third.

Zoffany, subsequentlypromoted to ante-postfavourite for the 2,000 Guineasby bookmakers, will most likelybe aimed at a Group 1 doublein the National Stakes at theCurragh in September.

This year’s Phoenix Stakesunderlined two significanttrends: first, that the race is agraveyard for Coventry Stakes winners. Strong Suitjoins Art Connoisseur,Henrythenavigator, Red Clubsand Three Valleys as Coventrywinners subsequently beatenin the Phoenix – not badcompany to keep, consideringthose four went on to claimGroup 1 glory (although ThreeValleys was later disqualifiedafter landing the Middle ParkStakes).

The second trend isBallydoyle’s domination of therace. O’Brien has trained 11winners – including luminariessuch as George Washington,Johannesburg andMastercraftsman – since 1998. Pedigree It is no surprise tosee another Ballydoyle-trainedPhoenix Stakes winner hailfrom the Danehill sire line. It

POET

Poet helps makes it fineweekend for PivotalRace analysis Rain showersarrived in the north of Englandjust in time for soft-groundspecialist Poet’s assault on theRose of Lancaster Stakes atHaydock on Saturday.

With the going at theMerseyside track havingdeteriorated to soft, Poetrecorded his fifth careersuccess – his second at Patternlevel, all on going rangingfrom good to yielding to heavy– with a brave, front-running,one-and-three-quarter-lengthwin over last-time-out Listedscorer Class Is Class.

The winner and runner-updrew six lengths clear of thethird, smart handicapper andListed runner-up DistantMemories, with another Listedwinner, Fallen Idol, a furtherthree and a quarter lengthsback in fourth.

Consistent and smart oldermare Les Fazzani, another whothrives with give underfoot, was well beaten in fifth, givingthe form a solid look.

Five-year-old Rio De LaPlata, winner of the PrixJean-Luc Lagardere at twoand on the comeback trailafter winning a Listed event on his latest appearance, disappointed badly, but can beexcused on what was his firststart over as far as anextended 1m2f since tacklingthe Derby, and on similarground to that at Haydock lastyear when he finished last asfavourite in the Listed SuperiorMile. He is evidently one whoprefers to hear his hoovesrattle.

Formerly trained atBallydoyle, five-year-old Poetfeatured some way down thelist of Aidan O’Brien’s starhorses according to Racing

Post Ratings, but that may saymore about O’Brien’sextraordinary firepower thanPoet himself. After a quietthree-year-old season, when heran just three times, winningonce and twice placed inListed company, and then atentative start to his four-year-old campaign, he reeled off aquickfire treble last season inthe Listed Ruby Stakes atKillarney, the valuable IrishCambridgeshire Handicap andthe Group 3 Kilternan Stakes.

Subsequently sold privatelyto race for Sheikh Sultan BinKhalifa Al Nahyan, Poet hadfour starts at the Dubaicarnival this year and wassoundly beaten in all of them.

Maybe the new Tapeta trackat Meydan just doesn’t suitPoet’s affinity for softer going,as the loss of form provedtemporary. After joining CliveCox in Lambourn for a Britishcampaign, he was sixth in theGala Stakes and then third inthe Steventon Stakes before hissuccessful Haydock assignment.

Poet holds an entry for arepeat bid in the Group 3Kilternan Stakes atLeopardstown next month and another for the IrishChampion Stakes on the same card. The former racelooks the more realistic option for a horse who couldtake a lot of beating at around

that level on softer going.Pedigree It is now ingrainedin racing folklore that in 1977fledgling owner-breeder EgonWeinfeld hired the services ofbloodstock agent RichardGalpin to select three or fourmares to found his broodmareband at Meon Valley Stud.

Galpin bought four mares, two as yearlings, two asbroodmare prospects, for atotal of 81,500gns, and three ofthem were so successful in thebreeding shed at Meon Valleythat the operation did not buyanother yearling for 30 years.

The two purchased asyearlings were 1,000 Guineasheroine One In A Million (damof Milligram and granddam ofOne So Wonderful) andGaltres Stakes winner Odeon(ancestress of Lady Carla). Butit was one of the broodmarepurchases who trumped eventhose lofty achievements atMeon Valley Stud.

Reprocolor, a daughter ofJimmy Reppin who had wonthe Lingfield Oaks Trial andcost Weinfeld 25,000gns,counts among herGroup 1-winning descendantsCezanne (her son), Kayf Tara,Opera House and Zee Zee Top(all out of Reprocolor’sdaughter Colorspin), Necklace(a granddaughter ofColorspin) and Zafisio (hergreat, great-grandson).

Along with Colorspin, it isReprocolor’s 1982 daughter byBellypha, Bella Colora, whohas done most to extend theblue hen’s influence.

Bella Colora is dam of Princeof Wales’s Stakes winner andEclipse runner-up Stagecraft,Strensall Stakes winnerMullins Bay, Dahlia Stakeswinner Balalaika (dam of JebelHatta scorer Alkaadhem) anddual Listed winner Hyabella, who is the dam of Poet andgranddam of Irish 2,000Guineas runner-up France andLingfield Derby Trial scorerAlessandro Volta.

Poet’s sire Pivotal – also onthe mark over the weekendwith Prix Maurice de Gheestwinner Regal Parade – haspreviously worked well withthe Reprocolor family whenmated with Reprocolor’sgranddaughter Flashing Greento produce German Listedwinner Flashing Colour, whileZee Zee Top has an as-yetunraced two-year-old daughterand Cheveley Park Stakesrunner-up Suez (out ofReprocolor’s daughter RepeatWarning) has a colt foal by theCheveley Park Stud flagshipstallion.

This is not the first time thatPivotal has produced a toughcookie when mated with amare by Shirley Heights or hissons. River Falcon, who wonhis seventh race on his 94thstart on Saturday, is by Pivotalout of the Elegant Air marePearly River, while Ratio, whoseeight career wins included theWokingham Handicap and aGroup 3 sprint, is out of theHigh Estate mare Owdbetts.

Champagne furtherexample of sire’s sparkling potential

is, after all, an abundantsource of talent that Coolmorehas mined intensively in itsbreeding programme.

But whereas O’Brien’s lasttwo Phoenix winners, AlfredNobel and Mastercraftsman, were by Coolmore sire DanehillDancer, and the two beforethat, George Washington andHoly Roman Emperor, were byDanehill Dancer’s late sireDanehill, Zoffany is by Dansili,a Danehill stallion who doesnot stand at Coolmore but atJuddmonte’s Banstead ManorStud in Newmarket, andwhose immense talent theoperation has recognised andtapped into.

Coolmore’s support ofDansili is evident in last year’sWeatherbys Return of Mares, where his stellar book bred ata fee of £65,000 includeBallydoyle Group 1 winners orplaced horses Alexandrova(has produced this year a bayfilly foal by the sire), All TooBeautiful (a bay colt), Listen (abay filly) and Moonstone (baycolt).

It was also seen at the sales, with John Magnier buyingZoffany for 220,000gns atBook 1 of the TattersallsOctober yearling sale, andhis son MV signing for theDansili colt who toppedthe DBS St Leger yearling

sale, now called Tom Sawyer.Dansili has provided ample

justification for the support –and a timely boost for his 2010batch of sales yearlings, whowere bred at a career-high feeof £75,000 – with a spectacularrun of form this summer.Breathtaking King Georgewinner Harbinger and Zoffanybecame his sixth and seventhindividual Group/Grade 1winners (and the first two bredoutside of his owner KhalidAbdullah’s Juddmontebreeding operation), and oneof those Juddmonte-bredGrade 1 winners, Proviso, added the Just A Game Stakesand Diana Stakes to her tallyof elite-level victories.

Furthermore, his progenyAviate, Famous Name, IceBlue, Illustrious Blue andStrawberrydaiquiri havenotched Group successes anddaughter Bewitched won abrace of Listed sprints.

Those standard-bearers thisseason demonstrate the sire’sversatility; their victories havecome over distances rangingfrom 6f (Bewitched andZoffany) to 2m (IllustriousBlue in the Goodwood Cup).

Zoffany was bred in Irelandby Epona Bloodstock out of theMachiavellian mare Tyranny, who had been bought aged

seven carrying Zoffany for230,000gns at the 2007Tattersalls December sale.

It was the second six-figuresale of Tyranny’s life, as shehad been purchased as ayearling in Newmarket for270,000gns out of theconsignment of her breeder,Hesmonds Stud. Racing in thecolours of Nicholas Cooper, shewon her maiden at three onher fifth career start – anoverdue success consideringshe had run subsequent RoyalLodge Stakes winner Al Jadeedto two and a half lengths onher debut.

Tyranny went on to win aclass 4 handicap off a mark of78 before finding stakescompany beyond her on threestarts in Listed races.

From the start of herretirement, Tyranny was sentto blue-chip stallions byNormandie Stud, as befits awinning half-sister to Grade 2heroine Spotlight and Listedrunner-up Dusty Answer, out of Group 3 winner Dust Dancer and from thefamily of high-class filliesBulaxie, Claxon andCassydora.

Her first two matings, withCape Cross and Rock OfGibraltar, produced fillies whofailed to win from seven startscombined, so early indicationssuggest that the Dansili matingthat produced Zoffany, herfourth foal, would be worthrepeating.

It will be fascinating to see how her third foal, thePivotal filly Queen Of Mean, develops. She made a winningdebut for owner-breedersNormandie Stud and trainerJohn Gosden at Yarmouthyesterday.Martin Stevens

Race analysis ChampagneD’Oro was winless from sixstarts at two last year, but thatrecord doesn’t tell the wholestory of her talent. She wasdisqualified after winning hermaiden following thediscovery of a bannedsubstance in her sample andshe went on to finish less thanseven lengths behind Lookin AtLucky in the Grade 1 Del MarFuturity.

It looked as though her luckwas still out this season afterfinishing a never-dangerous,well-beaten 11th in theKentucky Oaks, but thissummer she has finally livedup to her trainer Eric Guillot’shigh regard. She pulled off ashock win in the Grade 1Acorn Stakes in June, ransecond to Fanny Freud in theGrade 1 Prioress Stakes lastmonth and doubled her Grade1 tally in Saturday’s Test Stakes.

Champagne D’Oro racedprominently throughout theTest, battling with racefavourite Pica Slew, winner oflast month’s Grade 3 AzaleaStakes. Despite having set fastfractions in the early stages ofthe race, she impressedonlookers with the way inwhich she still had enough inreserve to sprint clear in thehome straight to put four anda half lengths between her andrunner-up Bonnie Blue Flag onthe line.

Guillot told Americanreporters afterwards: “Ifeverybody paid attention, shewas dragging two guys to thepost. Dragging them. Thisfilly’s been training great sincewe came up here. It’s not oftenyou see 44.4secs go up there, and to kick away from them. And that was a nice field.”

Champagne D’Oro looks anatural for the Breeders’ CupFilly & Mare Sprint at ChurchillDowns in November, but amore immediate assignment islikely to be the Grade 1Ballerina Stakes over 7f atSaratoga – the Test Stakescourse and distance – onAugust 28.

Pedigree Champagne D’Orois further evidence thatAmerican breeders have attheir disposal a stallion ofenormous potential inMedaglia D’Oro. She joins theoutstanding Rachel Alexandra,Gabby’s Golden Gal, PassionFor Gold and Warrior’s Rewardon the sire’s list ofGroup/Grade 1 winners.

The filly was bred byLiberation Farm out of theSaratoga Six mare ChampagneGlow, a runner-up in the Grade1 Frizette Stakes.

Champagne Glow’s progenyevidently have the will to win, with Glowing Tru, her son byCapote, winning 14 races,Phoneforchampagne, her sonby Phone Trick, winning sixand By Bye Crafty, her son byCrafty Prospector, notchingfour.

The habit of prolific successspreads further back in thefamily: Champagne Glow’sdam, Champagne Ginny, woneight races, including the Grade3 Boiling Springs Stakes; herhalf-brother Jurado won 13,including the Premio Vittorio diCapua at Milan (and unusuallyfor a sprinter’s pedigree isresponsible for tough stayingchasers Hello Bud and SwanseaBay); and another, GrandCanyon, won the Grade 1Hollywood Futurity andNorfolk Stakes at two.Martin Stevens

Quick questionsNicola Kent, Irelandrepresentative, Arqana salesjjHow strong is the Irishpresence at Deauville? Thesale’s success has made itincreasingly popular withvendors from outside Franceand there are a dozenconsignors from Ireland thisyear, accounting for over 40yearlings. Many of the mostsuccessful Irish consignors arerepresented, including theworld-famous Moyglare Stud, which will take part in theAugust sale for the first time.jjThe Arqana sale hasbucked the trend in recentyears, posting gains acrossthe board. Would a repeat oflast year’s returns be asuccess? The sale has gonefrom strength to strength inthe past few years, but it wouldbe wrong to make any wildpredictions in the currenteconomic climate. What we doknow is that this year’scatalogue is as strong as it hasever been and, with a widevariety of international buyersexpected to attend, theingredients are in place for asolid market.jjWhy buy a horse atDeauville? Not only is thepurchase of the horse a hugely pleasurable experience, but you have the opportunityto buy into some of the bestfamilies in Europe. Graduateshave an excellent track recordand the Arqana and FRBCteams will do their utmost tomake it a rewarding andenjoyable time both before andafter your purchase.

By Cathal Beale

POPULAR grey Snaefell securedhis fifth stakes victory at theCurragh on Sunday, winning theGroup 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes forthe second time.

The six-year-old gelding wasracing over his optimum ground(yielding) and trip (6f), and withthe aid of reapplied blinkers hestayed on well under Shane Foleyto score by three-quarters of alength.

Bred by Lady Clague’s NewberryStud just outside Kilcullen inCounty Kildare, Snaefell is byDanehill Dancer out of the stakes-placed mare Sovereign Grace.

His sister Daganya was placedin the Group 2 Flying Five and wonthe Listed Sweet Mimosa Stakes.

Sovereign Grace has alsoproduced the Listed-placed HenryHall. She is now retired from studduties and her final produce, atwo-year-old Aussie Rules fillycalled Mosaicist, is in trainingwith James Fanshawe.

Newberry Stud was purchasedby Lady Clague in 1975 andhouses the owner’s select band often broodmares.

“Lady Clague is very hands-onand has a great knowledge ofpedigrees,” said stud managerPat Murtagh. “She and her sonJonathon have a major input,

especially into the selection ofmating plans. We are mainly abreed-to-race operation, althoughwe do sell the odd one. Theyearlings are reared outside andcome in at the end of Septemberto be broken before being sent offto the trainers.”

And so it was with Snaefell, who was always a lovely lookinganimal with a great temperament, according to Murtagh.

“Snaefell was broken here andsent to Michael Halford,” he said.“He has been a fantastic servant, winning five stakes races. Heenjoys number one status in theyard and even Michael’s kids siton his back. He is a gentleman of

a horse and as long as he is fit andwell we will continue with him.He will then have a great retire-ment on the farm.”

With Snaefell’s regular jockeysFran Berry, Pat Smullen andJohnny Murtagh all unavailable,Foley was given the chance tosecure his first stakes winner.

Pat Murtagh explained: “Wehad to make the decision onFriday and we thought, why notgive ‘Dusty’ a try. I think he is asgood as anyone and he gave thehorse an excellent ride.”

Snaefell will have to improveto win a Group 1, but NewberryStud has produced some fine top-level winners over the years.

“Namid is the best we have had.He won the Prix de l’Abbaye andwas a fraction of a second outsidethe track record,” said Murtagh. There was also Key Change, whoraced for Lady Clague and wonthe Yorkshire Oaks, and IrishOaks winner Winona, who wasbred at Newberry.

“Key Change foaled late lastyear, so she does not have a foalat foot, but she is in foal to SeaThe Stars, so we are all excitedabout that,” added Murtagh. “Shehas a cracking yearling filly byDansili who will be retained torace. Winona is in foal to Azamourand we also have Daganya, whois in foal to Excellent Art.”

Snaefell another smart performerfor Lady Clague’s Newberry Stud

THE second in a series of SmartApproach seminars, hosted bythe Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’Association in conjunction withthe National Development Plan– a government-backed industriesinvestment scheme – drew a largecrowd of breeders last Thursday, writes Cathal Beale.

The seminar highlighted yearlingpreparation and comprised a paneldiscussion in the morning and apractical visit in the afternoon.
