“Getting Ready to Refresh”

I’m ready for a refresh.

Have you ever felt so exhausted that you feel you are dying for a refresh? Dying for a break?

Dying for a seemingly-free minute to breathe? What ever happened to stop and smelling the roses?

I don’t feel like I have stopped to smell for months now. I probably haven’t. Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely grateful

for all of my recent projects. It’s exciting to see my small company growing into a larger one, but I am tired. I’m tired

from work, tired from my personal life, and tired from being busy.

It’s probably a good thing the holidays are coming. Despite the business of the Holiday Season, I seem to slow down a bit

(work-wise). I seem to find the time to walk the malls at a slower pace, breathe in a bit of the crisp fall air, relax on my

couch with my favorite alpaca blanket, and sip my favorite peppermint tea. These things all seem festive and fit the

season so it’s something I feel I “should do” although I really enjoy them all!

Why is it that I can’t find excuses like “I should” more often?? Why does it take the Holiday Season to get me in the

mood to relax a little?

Even the hustle and bustle of the busy Holiday shopping is calming too me. I actually enjoy Holiday shopping. Then

again, I’m not one to save holiday shopping until the last minute when it’s stressful either. That probably helps.

I think all of us need a “refresh” from time-to-time. We need that break from life to reenergize and reinvigorate us. I think

us “creative types” really don’t ever stop working. We work all the time, but we just enjoy what we do so much it’s often

hard to find a break.

I encourage each of you to refresh this Holiday Season. Find the time to pause for a moment and walk the malls at a

slower pace, breathe in a bit of the crisp fall air, relax on you couch with a favorite blanket, and sip your favorite tea.

You all deserve it!

So let’s all begin this Holiday Season with a group of refreshed fashionistas at the

helm…

Fashionably Yours,

Hello FGI San Diego! Time is an interesting thing. It’s seems like the tighter we try to grasp onto it, the faster and more easily it slips away from us. Don’t you think? After stepping back from some of my obligations, time still seems to be racing along (anyone else scared to death that Christmas is a month and a half away?), but I seem to be enjoying more of it. So what that I didn’t carve my pumpkins until the night before Halloween, the important part was watching my kids carve theirs all by themselves for the first time. So what that I’ve not had time to blow dry my hair in the morning, I actually found some pretty cute ways to style my hair sans heat! So what that I didn’t have time to do my make-up in the morning (GASP-since I’m a make-up artist!), but I realized that one coat of mascara and a killer red lipstick go a LONG way, not to mention is easier on touch-ups throughout the day! I guess what I’m getting at is to not sweat the small stuff, because you never know where it might lead you. As the holiday season comes running at us full-force, allow those little things to go aside, and focus on the bigger picture. Enjoy more of your “imperfect” life rather than waste all of your time trying to have a “perfect” life that you’ll never get to experience anyway. Until next time…

WHO we are already…

The Fashion Group International is a

global non-profit association with a

network of over 5,000 dynamic

professionals of achievement and

influence from all areas of fashion

and related industries including

apparel, accessories, beauty,

publishing, retailing and interior

design.

Established in 1930, The Fashion

Group International was founded on

the idea that it takes an exceptional

woman to flourish and succeed in the

challenging world of fashion. That

year, seventeen women gathered by

Edna Woolman Chase, editor-in-chief

of VOGUE, met for lunch in New

York City. They had three things in

common: each held a job of

consequence in fashion, each

respected every member of the group

and each held a common belief.

They agreed that fashion needed a

forum for the expression and

enhancement of the American fashion

business and the increasingly

important role women played in the

industry. Ever since, the organization

has brought the best and the brightest

in the industry together in unique

ways that provide an unrivaled

support system, while facilitating the

exchange of ideas and resources.

Elizabeth Arden, Edith Head and

Eleanor Roosevelt were among the

founding members. Eight decades

later, the names have changed, but

the energy, talent and commitment

remains the same.

WHAT we do in the present…

The Fashion Group International

works to promote the advancement of

every member, while addressing

issues that affect the entire industry.

Our commitment to the industry is

evident in our proactive approach to

business. Our events provide a forum

for the exchange of ideas and

information with industry leaders on

a wide array of topics.

WHERE we are headed in the

future…

Cognizant of the ever-changing

nature of the industry, and the

increasingly turbulent nature of

business, the Fashion Group

International addresses issues

relevant to the future of the industry.

Our events encourage thinking

outside the box, both for members

and non-members alike. As we begin

the twenty-first century, the role of

our organization will be more

relevant than ever. Even conducting

“business as usual” will require

foresight and knowledge of “big

picture” issues that are the hallmark

of our events.

Global communications and the New

Media revolution are an integral part

of our commitment to being at the

cutting edge. Fashion Group

International’s online presence as

well as localized blogs and social

media is the industry’s number one

cyber-destination for a wealth of

information about fashion and

fashion-related industries. Fashion

Group International’s web site is an

ever-evolving resource for industry

professionals.

FGI Mission Statement…

The FGI mission is to be the

pre-eminent authority on the business

of fashion and design and to help its

members become more effective in

their careers. To do this, FGI

provides insights on major trends in

person, online and in print; access to

business professionals and a gateway

to the influence fashion plays in the

marketplace.

The goals of the organization

are…

To advance professionalism in

fashion and its related lifestyle

industries.

To provide a public forum for

examination of important,

contemporary issues in the business

of fashion.

To present timely information

regarding national and global trends

that have an effect on the fashion

industries.

To provide activities and programs

which enhance networking skills and

encourage interpersonal contacts so

as to further the professional, social

and personal development of

On Saturday, October 19th, FGI San Diego had their annual

Professional Development Day held at Mesa College. This year’s esteemed speakers

included Liza Ferraro (owner of Fit n Hip Wear), Melissa Hendrix (owner of Crow Thief), Connie Minx

(Human Resources at Nordstrom), Brigitte Palmer (owner of Brigitte Couture Design) and our own FGI San

Diego Board Member, Marie Green (Director of Training/Merchandising Manager of the Real Real). Attendees,

both seasoned as well as new to the industry, took away some amazing education and life advice. Here’s what

Marie Green had to say about her road to success…

“In your job, if you see a need or procedure that could be

improved, you should take action...it could lead to a promotion!”

“In this fast-moving, high-tech world, it’s important to be able

to adapt to change, not fear it.”

“Work hard...that is the number one thing everyone at

TheRealReal has in common. We work very hard! Do what

you love and business will always be a pleasure!”

With a business background, and a love for fashion, Vania, with the

invaluable support from her husband, will open a kiosk featuring leggings,

scarves, and some jewelry at The Headquarters at Seaport District later this

month. CC's Fashion, is a new business venture focused with fast fashion

offering trendy accessories to complete that fabulous look.

After receiving her Finance degree from San Diego State University, Vania

began her career in the renewable energy business; and would have never

imagined that after 13 years in the renewable energy sector she would be

changing her career into fashion. After many years with AES, a Fortune 500

company, her position was transferred to Houston, Texas. Living in San

Diego all her life and having established roots here, and knowing what the

Houston weather is like, transferring was not an option. What now? Was the

question that she contemplated for many months. After much thought, and

many brain storming discussions with her husband, they decided to go with

something she enjoyed and loved, which is fashion.

Vania believes that The Headquarters will attract the right kind of mix of

shoppers, who will benefit from the fast fashion concept that her business

brings. CC's Fashion will be opened for business November 20th, so please

stop by and mention FGI for a 5% member discount.
