Lamu Island, Kenya 8 to 12 March 2017
lamuyoga.org facebook.com/lamuyoga
It is with great joy and gratitude towards the Island of Lamu and its inhabitants that we welcome you to the fourth annu-al Lamu Yoga Festival. We are honored to celebrate life together through 4 days of yoga, culture, food, beach and fun. The word “Yoga” means Union, bring-ing harmony in breath, body and mind. That’s the aim of the Lamu Yoga festival, to bring people from all walks of life to-gether. I feel privileged that the Lamu Yoga festival can be part of this amazing island. Lamu, a muslim island, hosting a yoga festival. A very powerful message to send to East Africa and the world at large!
We celebrate harmony in diversity, respect each other, work together and live in peace.
This festival would not be possible with-out the help of our amazing teachers, the people of Lamu, the County Government, the Shela Welfare Group, sponsors, vol-unteers and yoga lovers.
Thank you for allowing us to promote Lamu as the wellness destination of East Africa and yoga as a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for joining us for the Lamu Yoga Festival and we wish you an inspir-ing and wonderful time.
Monika FauthChairlady,Lamu Yoga Festival
The 4th edition of the Lamu Yoga Festival is here with us again, making it one of the most important events of the County cal-endar, Lamu Island of Festivals.
Yoga is rapidly growing in Kenya and has become a way of life for many young peo-ple, providing balance in their very hec-tic lives through the various mental and physical activities. As it is well known yoga uses ancient physical and mental practice that provides broad ranging health care benefits of mind and body. The County Government of Lamu takes pride in hosting this festival and is com-mitted to promote and support yoga, as a way of life, at the same time encourage the local community to grasp this oppor-tunity and make it an everyday activity.
That said, Lamu island is majestic, beau-tiful and removed from the typical, mak-
ing it an important location to practice yoga. Tucked away in the coast of Kenya, Lamu is an Archipelago of some of the most pristine islands in the world, one can’t help but feel like they’ve stepped away from it all. The pure soothing air and blue-bird skies inspire you to realign with nature and breathe life in full. Nowhere else in the country does such place exist.
I take this opportunity to wish you a won-derful experience at the Lamu Yoga Festi-val as it may change your life in more ways that you can imagine. We hope you will re-turn for another Festival.

Yoga stylesAcro YogaBlends the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power if acrobatics and the loving kindness of healing arts.
Art of Living Art of Living is an international NGO founded by H.H.Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that offers programs where the breath is the key to a happy, healthy and energetic life. They will be offering work-shops on hatha yoga, pranayama, meditation and knowledge at the festival.
Ashtanga YogaAshtanga, which means “eight limbs” in san-skrit, is a fast- paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. This practice is very physically demand-ing because of the constant movement from one pose to the next and the emphasis on daily prac-tice.
Baptiste Power YogaBaptiste Yoga was founded in the 1940′s by Walt Baptiste and through his son Baron, it has evolved into a practice that holds true to the spirit of its creation while remaining accessible to anyone today. The physical aspects of Bap-tiste Yoga style are inspired by the Hatha Yoga teachings of Krishnamacharya and his students Iyengar and Desikachar,
Bikram Pioneered by Bikram Choudhury. It is practiced in a 35 C to 37.7 C degree room, which allows for a loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweat-ing, which is thought to be cleansing. The Bikram method is a set series of 26 poses, repeated twice.
CapoeiraCapoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was devel-oped in Brazil mainly by African descendants with native Brazilian influences, probably be-ginning in the 16th century.
Empowered Alignment An alignment focused practice with roots in ashtanga and Hatha yoga.
Dru Yoga and MeditationDru is a grace ful and potent form of yoga, based on soft flow ing move ments, directed breath ing and visu al iza tion. Dru works on body, mind and spirit – improving strength and flex i bil ity, creat ing core sta bil ity, remov ing energy block ages, build ing a height ened feel ing of pos i tiv ity, and deeply relax ing and reju ve nat ing your whole be-ing. Peo ple call Dru the ‘yoga of the heart’ – come and open your heart in a Dru Yoga and medita-tion session.
Five Tibetan RitesBrought from Tibet to India around the 11th or 12th century. It is a series of poses, marking the birth of the Tibetan Rites. The Rites are said to strengthen and energize the body and slow down the aging process. They were specifically designed to strengthen our chakras.
Forrest YogaForrest Yoga teaches how to bring aliveness, us-ing breath, into every cell of your body. It is an intense physical and internally focused prac-tice based on traditional yoga from the east, but adapted for the western lifestyle. One major as-pect of Forrest Yoga is the detailed body align-ment. The practice is founded on four pillars: Breath, Integrity, Strength and Spirit.
Freedom DanceA mix of freeflowing dance movement and simple choreography that learners can have fun with at their next dance party. Incorporating yoga stretching with hip hop, traditional Afri-can dance (East and West African dance styles) as well as movement exercises to help partici-pants to feel comfortable in movement. Be ready to sweat, laugh and have fun through the free-dom of dance.
Hatha Yoga Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical kinds of yoga. If a class is described as Hatha style, it is probably going to be slow-paced and gentle and provide a good in-troduction to the basic yoga poses.
HathaYoga-AromatherapyHatha yoga class, combined with aromatherapy.
IyengarIyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that has an em-phasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath con-trol (pranayama), created by guru B.S.K Iyengar.
Kanga Yoga Kanga Yoga is an energetic, alignment-based flow yoga practice using music, gravity and the breath to rediscover and rejuvenate the body and the mind.
Kundalini The emphasis in Kundalini is on the breath in conjunction with physical movements, with the purpose of freeing energy in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards. All asana practices make use of controlling the breath, but in Kund-alini, the exploration of the effects of the breath (also called prana, meaning energy) on the pos-tures is essential. Kundalini exercises are also called kriyas.
Dynamic Osho MeditationThis is meditation with movement.
PranayamaPranayama is a Sanskrit word alternatively translated as “extension of the prãna (breath or life force)” or “breath control”. The word is com-posed from two Sanskrit words: prana meaning life force (noted particularly as the breath), and yama which means to restrain or control the prana, implying a set of breathing techniques where the breath is intentionally altered in or-der to produce specific results.
Power YogaAshtanga is also the inspiration for what is often called Power Yoga, which is based on the flowing style of Ashtanga without keeping strictly to the set series.
Soul FlowSoul Flow is a vinyasa/flow style yoga that is practiced to Global Soul music. Salim Rollins de-veloped the style from his foundation with At-mananda Sequence (New York) and the various yoga centers throughout India where he studied. Soul Flow is an uplifting experience of sound, breath and movement.
SUP Yoga (paddleboard yoga)Yoga on paddle boards, finding core strength and body toning through balance and natural flow with the elements of water, wind and sunshine. A fun challenge for the mind, body and spirit.
The RocketA modification of the classical Ashtanga series, The Rocket is a vinyasa style class that incor-porates arm balances, inversions and classical standing and seated asanas (or postures). Prac-tice ujjayi breath, bandhas and drishti in this uplifting and challenging yoga sequence. Caitlin Tablot is coming all the way from Los Angeles to teach the Rocket at the festival.
Vinyasa Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vin-yasa, which means breath-synchronized move-ment, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called sun salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath.
Vision Board - Living Your DreamsA workshop on living life to your full potential by Paul Krystall.
Yin or Yin-Yang YogaYin-Yang yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures, or asanas, that are held for longer pe-riods of time—for beginners, it may range from 45 seconds to two minutes; more advanced prac-titioners may stay in one asana for five minutes or more.
YogaCoreA fluid Vinyasa/Ashtanga based yoga flow of core strengthening combinations, fun and imaginative.
ZumbaEach Zumba class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on. We take the work out of workout, by mixing low intensity and high intensity moves for an interval-styles, calo-rieburning dance fitness party Zumba: a dance fit ness party that will spark your inner moves, tone and oxy genate the body. A sure way to have fun and loosen the spine allow ing increased flex i bil ity for yoga.
