Members’ Show LEGENDS

Virginia Avery and Ros Farbush

Virginia Avery was a watercolorist of great renown and a beloved member of the Art Center. She taught watercolor for many years and even had a one-person show entitled 40 years of Watercolor in the Bancroft Gallery in the late 90s. Virginia’s family has brought some of her wonderful watercolors to the Art Center for show and sale in a Virginia Avery Retrospective exhibit through July 10. The work will be on display in the Manning Lobby at the Art Center.

Another Art Center legend was Ros Farbush—a red-headed spitfire who painted all over Boston and the South Shore in hues of purple, aqua, and hot pink! Ros’ daughter Bonnie is presenting some of Ros’ paintings in the Feature Tent during the Festival, June 17–19. Most of the work is for sale and provides a wonderful opportunity to own a “Farbush.”

Don’t miss viewing the work of these remarkable artists—they have been great contributors to the art scene on the South Shore and their work lives on!

SSAC Awards Craft & Fine Art Exhibitors

C ongratulations to the recipients of the 2015 Shirley Neer Teaching Prize and our Volunteer of the Year Award, given each October at the Annual Meeting.

DONNA ROSSETTI-BAILEY Shirley Neer Award

The Shirley Neer Teaching Prize is supported by the Neer family and honors Shirley’s significant contributions to the Art Center. The prize is given annually to a children’s art in-structor whose dedication to the art of teaching is inspiring.

Donna Rossetti-Bailey is a gifted pastel artist (1st prize in this year’s Festival) and she is a gifted teacher as well. Her students are devoted to her enthusiastic instruction and admire her dedication to her craft. Her lively 5-hour class on Wednesdays makes everyone in the building smile.

FRANK NEER, MARK TOSI & BILL HOUSERVolunteers of the Year

Board members Frank Neer and Mark Tosi co-chaired the Art Center’s 60th Anniversary Gala last June. Held on the grounds of the Music Circus, the gala set records for fun-draising and spectacular Cohasset events. Keith Lockhart was honored with an award and the 300 person crowd was wowed all evening. What a party these guys can throw!

Bill Houser is a dedicated board member who is willing to help any way he can. Tend bar, move art, install art, curate exhibitions, host a staff lunch, pick up trash after Festival. We don’t know of anything that will stop him from helping the Art Center—a true friend to all of us at SSAC. PRESIDENT’S PRIZESponsored by Phyllis and Bill Wenzel/Image ResolutionsThe President’s Prize is given each year to an outstanding craft artist.

SSAC Artist in Residence ProgramSSAC celebrates 13 years of the Artist in Residence pro-gram, a free educational outreach art program designed for students in grades 3, 4 & 5. This innovative program introduces students to professional artists working in a di-verse array of mediums: collage, pastel, paint, photogra-phy, book arts and sculpture. Students visit SSAC for two hours, meet with the artist, learn about their process, how they became a professional artist, where they find their inspiration and more.

Students then create their own masterpiece in the artist’s medium to take home. Over the years these creations have included: small books, silkscreen prints, wire mo-biles, clay heads, collages and mono prints.

This program is made possible by the dedication and hard work of our A.I.R. volunteer team: Diane Buckley, Kate Farrington, Jane Johnston, Tania McCann, Linda Nar-do, Marlene Tabor and Cybele Veitas. Every Wednesday morning these volunteers assist 40–50 students in making art throughout the school year. We thank our out-going Artist In Residence, Karen McEachern Cass for a hugely successful and popular two years as our A.I.R.

This up-coming school year we welcome Lisa Goren, a watercolorist living in Boston, as this year’s Artist in Resi-dence. Lisa’s unique paintings focus on polar and frozen landscapes she has visited. Lisa shares stories of her expe-riences and travels through Antarctica and the High Arc-tic in her colorful presentation to the students.

To reserve your school’s participation in this popular pro-gram, contact: [email protected]. SSAC permits each vis-iting school two weekly sessions with a maximum number of 50 students per session.

In our fifth year, SSAC has continued with the Art Stars projects. This year, twenty seven 10th-12th graders, nominated from ten south shore high schools, created a 16’x16’ mural for the ex-terior of our building wall, which faces the MBTA Greenbush line track.

Be sure to check it out! The 2016 murals are up and visible from the James Brook shops on Pleasant Street. Based on photomontages the students created using photos they took of the interior and exterior of our building, the mural is a visually exciting abstrac-tion we have defined as “Digi-tecture”!

504 CREATING ABSTRACT IMAGERY IN PASTEL Debora L. Stewart“Do not copy nature too much. Art is an abstraction.” Paul Gauguin Abstraction is a shift in focus. In realistic work we have a road map based on what we are look-ing at and it is in front of us. In abstraction we must tear ourselves away from what we see and it becomes another way of expression. It is an internal dialogue with our own personal frame of reference. Instead of portraying the object or figure in front of us it becomes a reaction to that object or figure. Learn to loosen up, tap into your intuition, create abstract composi-tions, use underpaintings and pastel ground and create abstract realism with flowers and figures. Learning abstract techniques will open your work to new possibilities. This three day workshop will give you the tools to explore the excitement of abstraction. Thorough handouts are provided for each participant. 7/22–7/24 Fri–Sun 9:30–4:00$450M $495NM 3 classes

523 PAINTING—THE DYNAMICS OF COLOR PHASE TWO Suzanne SchiresonExpand your appetite for color and pattern through mixed-media painting! Rather than use a white canvas, students will work on pat-terned and collaged surfaces built during the workshop. This two-day class teaches students to draw with color in their paintings, creat-ing depth, space and form through an in depth look at color temperature and the interactions of color. Students can work from a still life of objects that have special meaning to them or have the option to paint a self-portrait from a mirror. Color and pattern will be presented as tools to express emotion and create a narrative. Examples of evocative, painterly realism will be explored through a sampling of related visual art works and demonstration.7/20–7/21 Wed–Thurs 10:00–4:00$160M $205NM 2 classes

524 ART FROM THE SOUL FOR THE SOUL Nella Lush What is Art for you? Does it make you happy,

frustrated or does it bring you peace? Art for me is

an extension of myself, an extension of my being

and all that moves me. —Nella This workshop is about finding yourself and an approach to your art making. It is about seeking your own voice and finding that which you have within yourself. You will be guided through trusting the process and by giving yourself permission, you will find that magic. We will use cold wax and marble dust. Students may work in any painting medium they wish.8/13 & 8/20 Sat 10:00–4:00$325M $370NM 2 classesNella was born, raised and educated in Italy. She is

541 SOLARPLATE PRINTMAKING AND HYBRID WORKS ON PAPER: A MASTER CLASS Dan WeldenThis four day “art making” workshop will revolve around the ‘Solarplate Process’ and will require established printmakers to have a good background with both the processing and printing of Solarplates. There will be demon-strations of both relief and intaglio methods, as well as color printing and creating various “Hybrid Works”. Participants will be encour-aged to utilize embossment as well as a layering of color. Each person may choose to work on multiple plates or concentrate on a series of works. Welden will also demonstrate his unique approach of “reworking” impressions with painterly and graphic techniques. Printmaking experience is mandatory. It is requested that artists applying for this class are ‘self directed’ and interested in developing a ‘series’ of work. This is not an exploratory introductory ‘how to’ class but one with emphasis on master works.Solar plates will be available for pre purchase at a 25% discount and must be ordered 2 weeks prior to the session.8/5–8/7 Fri–Sun 9:30–4:30 3 classes $450M $500NM 4 classes
