It is my great pleasure, once again, to invite you into this fabulous event that we share each year. I am immensely proud of the program presented here. Despite tough times in the arts sector, it is clear that Fairbridge Festival is resilient and remains a consistently compelling and inclusive event, with a program as diverse as the audience who enjoy it.

Fairbridge Festival truly is a festival for and of the people – the ‘folk’, if you like! Consider for a moment this defi nition of a folk festival: “more than a diversity of folk music which only attracts a certain audience, it is a festival that embraces a diversity of folk coming together to enjoy all sorts of music”. For me this is a truer defi nition of what Fairbridge Festival off ers.

This is my second festival as Artistic Director. I heartily thank our brilliant team of programmers, assistant directors and artists support staff for all the work they have done. Be it the wonderful children’s program or the stunning line-up at the new “Backlot” venue (formerly Youthopia); the passion of our programmers is critical to the success of the festival. This of course is underpinned by an administration team and board that share an equal passion for all we do. I know that barely a day passes without them thinking about our core business, our visions for the future and making sure the experience for you, our treasured audience, is rich and rewarding.

The program is now in your hands and I invite you to enjoy every corner of it. Beneath the beautiful design of this booklet sits many a hidden treasure, and your festival experience will be all the more rewarding for taking the time to delve into these pages. The program is layered and rich, the bounty deep. Have a brilliant time!

RACOO CHARLES WITH THE MOKE FOLKDreamy, happy-go-lucky and absurdist folk fusion form Freo's Racoo Charles and her Mokes. Charles sings tangled stories of vision quests and backwater magicians. Sprawling, shambolic, new-age-old-time music played by musical larrikins. WA

Edie GreenThe sonic result of uninhibited jam sessions Together, jazz-trained drummer Tyler, glam-rock/ funk guitarist Conor, metal-minded bassist Elliot and folk/ neosoul singer Sophie make an eclectic soundscape ranging from blues-rock to funk-folk. WA

The Tommyhawks The Tommyhawks are four lasses who explode with

gutsy, sax-y, blues-fuelled songs. Their songs fi nd that sweet spot between rollicking folk melodies

and downright hard-driving, punk-infused blues. Frontwoman Axe’s voice is ‘both raucous and

angelic’; combine that with dark sax harmonies and a home-made electric mandolin and you’ll be

left with some dirty little goosebumps. WA

WA’s favourite purveyors of genrebendinggypsy-rock are back to celebrate their tenth year on earth.

Inglorious BardstersColin Driscoll and Neil McArthur, AKA the Inglorious Bardsters, are both Victorian- based bush poets who

write and perform their own individual styles of original bush poetry and comedy. Witty, sometimes serious but mostly downright hilarious, these two blokes prove that modern day bush poetry is not only about cattle drives, sunlit plains and dying horses. With poem titles such as Bowel Scan Blues, The Cow Creek Ladies First Aide Club, Memoirs of a Sheep and Shopping Trolley Rage, it is no wonder the Inglorious Bardsters are forging a cult following worthy of any Tarantino production. Check them out at the Poets Breakfast each morning or join their workshops where they pose the question... Who says "Rhyme Doesn't Pay?" VIC

Josh will be explaining the key design features of his house and the data to date.

VENUES BACKLOT A festival within a festival – off the main drag and in the woods behind Nightingale Cottage – Backlot is a cool mix of inspired music, crafty crafts, hands-on workshops and a chilled out chai space.

CHAPEL Located at the top of Market Street, and adjacent to catering area. This beautiful acoustic venue is ideal for vocal and intimate music concerts. The adjacent lawns are set for fun activities and provide a great place to relax.

CLUBHOUSE A place of special memories for the Old Fairbridgians who grew up in the village. It’s the home of intimate concerts with an emphasis on traditional music and special musical presentations, including Old School Audio and In Conversations events. The Village Museum (open all day) can be found in the East Wing. The Clubhouse kitchen is the home of the Good Food for Cool Dudes cooking sessions

CLUB WEST The west wing of the Clubhouse (downhill side) is used for Kids’ events and some dance workshops.

DINING HALL We program this village-run venue with performances all day on Saturday and Sunday so you can enjoy your meal with a variety of entertainment. Then from 6:30 - 8:30pm on Friday and Saturday, the Dining Hall morphs into a cosy wine bar – complete with twinkling candles. Pre-book your table for dinner then sit back as MC Jane Cornes introduces a showcase of festival acts curated especially for Supperclub Revue.

DJINDALUX Our star attraction! The name is a fusion of two ancient languages – Noongar and Latin, and translates as starlight. The venue replaces Riverside and is situated behind the Chapel. You won’t miss the entranceway.

GUS’S BAR A place to meet up with friends old and new! Centrally located opposite Mandja and food caterers, Gus’s bar sells Guinness. What more do you need to know?! Pop in for a chat and discover your favourite act doing a cameo on stage.

HOOPLA (on the basketball court) Put your dancing shoes on! Dance displays and workshops during the day and some serious grrooooving at night!

KALEIDOSCOPE Provides all day entertainment for the younger ones (and Mum and Dad too!). Find us in our new location to the east of the swimming pool. Now open into the evening for slightly older kids (11-15 yrs) to have a dance and hang out!

LOFT Upstairs in the Clubhouse, this small and intimate venue is home to Playback Theatre during the day (the most interactive fun you’ll have!). Entrance located across from the Garden Bar. Strictly no food or drink allowed and leave your shoes at the door.

MANDJA Our main concert venue, (opposite Gus’s Bar) and home to spectacular live music shows across the folk and world music genre. Mandja means “meeting place” in the local Noongar language.

PAPER SCISSORS ROCK Hands on art and create workshops for children of all ages. Located under the trees opposite Kaleidoscope.

RETREAT The old girl with the blue roof (look for the clock tower – it’s behind there). Masterclasses and workshops are held in one room and Kids in the Kitchen cooking sessions are in the retreat kitchen.

RUBY’S This is a licensed and seated venue tucked in behind Fairbridge House and adjacent to the Garden Bar. One of our most popular venues – it is a place to sit, relax and enjoy a drink with your music. While it is informal, Ruby's is still a concert space and we ask that audiences keep noise to a minimum during the performances.

NOTE for parents and guardians FOR THOSE WITH YOUNG CHILDREN: The festival is family-friendly, but it can be distressing when young ones get parted from mum/dad/their carer. We do not provide child-care, so please be sure you always know where your little ‘uns are. Write your mobile number on children’s wristbands, and be sure they know where Festival HQ is should they get lost (in Belfast Cottage - the big green cottage towards the entrance, adjacent to the fi rst aid post.)

essentialsARTISTS CENTRAL AND INSTRUMENT LOCK-UPThis service for musicians is located between Mandja and Clive Cottage. Artists are strongly encouraged to use this facility to store their instruments.

BABY FEEDING AND CHANGING Mother Hen’s Coop is under the shady trees near Kaleidoscope. This little haven for mums and dads provides a comfy place to feed and change bub. There's a change table and natural sanitising cleanser.

CAMPING AND VEHICLE MOVEMENT For the comfort of others, please do not drive around the campgrounds or festival precinct once you have set up your campsite. There are specifi c ‘no vehicle movement’ areas and these must be observed. Take care to park your vehicle off access ways and do not block others.
