If pre-registration is cancelled at least three full business days (Tuesday through Saturday) before an individual program, your fee can be donated as a tax-deductible contribution to Fernwood, or we can provide you with a refund. Refunds are not provided for registrations cancelled on less than three days’ notice. Join members of the Michiana Astronomical Society as they set up their telescopes in the Arboretum for an evening of looking at the night skies. The Dippers will be high overhead, the Summer Triangle looms to the east, and with a new moon that night, all the stars and planets will be at their best. Bring a flashlight and dress for cool temperatures in the open fields. $15 (Members $12) | All children 10 and under are free.Register by June 21.

JULYFROM MINTS TO MILKWEEDS – MIDSUMMER’S FLOWERS Sunday, July 9, 1–2:30pm

Enjoy an afternoon walk with a horticulturist through Fernwood’s gardens and natural areas in search of mints, milkweeds, and other midsummer flowers as you learn the field characteristics of important plant families. Bring a field guide and hand lens if you have one. $12 (Members $10) Register by July 7.

QUILT GARDENS OF AMISH COUNTRYThursday, July 13, 9am–6pm

The Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail combines quilting, gardening, and art into a one-of-a-kind event, with more than a million vibrant blooms, 19 gigantic gardens, and 22 hand-painted super-sized murals. Join Fernwood as we hit the backroads of Elkhart County to view some of the collection. Enjoy shopping at an Amish cheese shop, bakery, and more. AUGUSTPRESSING PLANTS FOR STUDY AND ENJOYMENTSunday, August 6, 1–2:30pm

A collection of pressed plant specimens is called an herbarium. Traditionally, herbarium specimens provide an important record of what grew where over time. Keeping a personal herbarium can be a helpful tool in developing a personal connection and familiarity with the natural world. Here we provide some practical tips for creating your own collection of pressed plants.$12 (Members $10) Register by August 4.

LET A BACKPACK BE YOUR GUIDE!With long summer days ahead of you and children that need entertaining, bring them out to explore Fernwood with one of our educational backpacks. Choose from ones that explore the gardens or birds, or enjoy one just for preschoolers. Each backpack contains activities that can be done along the trails, in the Nature Center, or for follow-up at home. Backpacks are provided by the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph County.

SEE FERNWOOD AT THE FORT ST. JOSEPH OPEN HOUSE IN NILESIn 1691 the French established a fort in Niles to secure control of the fur trade in the area, a fort that eventually fell under British control (except for a day of Spanish occupation in 1781) before the United States took ownership of the Great Lakes area. The Fort was rediscovered in 1998, and ongoing research has been conducted there ever since. Join us at the Fort St. Joseph Open House August 5 and 6 (we’ll be there in the afternoons) as archaeologists, historians, and re-enactors celebrate this historic site.
