Felsted Sixth Sixth Form: Years 12 and 13 for ages 16 to 18 Combining passions, creating success Independence, responsibility, self-discovery and motivation are the key life skills developed in Felsted Sixth. Not only do Felstedians at the top of the school learn to adapt to the freedoms and associated responsibilities of life as young adults, but they become independent learners, preparing themselves for success at university and beyond. Thanks to the wide range of subjects on offer at AS/A2 and through the well established International Baccalaureate Diploma, Felstedians construct an academic programme to suit their particular strengths and interests. This motivates them to achieve the results they need to pursue the next stage of their education, often with the goal of a chosen career in mind. To support these aspirations, Felsted Sixth is a purposeful community, where students take responsibility for their own learning under the guidance of staff experienced in this stage of education. Felsted’s dedicated Sixth Form Centre is the hub of this community, a place to study, but also to relax and socialise, bringing a healthy balance to Sixth Form life. International students add to the social mix and all Sixth Formers lead the school by example, taking principal roles in the wide range of co-curricular activities available within The Felsted Diploma, and in pioneering trips abroad such as to our partner charity Magic Bus in India or to one of our Round Square partner schools. Felsted Sixth is a crucial time in the development of lifelong learners when adult ambitions begin to emerge, and Felstedians are encouraged to develop the skills and motivation they need to fulfil their individual pathways. Felsted SixthSixth Form: Years 12 and 13 for ages 16 to 18

Combining passions, creating successIndependence, responsibility, self-discovery and motivation are the key life skills developed in Felsted Sixth.

Professional coaching

Educational choice and excellence“ I really appreciated my Tutor’s advice on the academic programme that would best suit me – I’m pleased with my decision ” – Lizzie, Year 12

Small classes, rigorous academic teaching, close monitoring and individual Tutoring give Felsted Sixth Formers the best chance of success in their chosen academic programme. Specialising in four subjects at AS Level and three or (for high achievers) four at A2 gives Felstedians the opportunity to focus on in-depth study in their specific areas of academic interest and these can be combined to create a programme tailored to the individual. At least 25 subjects are offered at AS/A2 Level with unique combinations to suit Felstedians’ individual interests and abilities.

Alternatively, Felstedians may study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and this two-year course of study is extremely well established

at Felsted, producing excellent results. Recognised the world over and highly respected by universities both in the UK and abroad for its breadth as well as its depth, this is the ideal study programme for all-round Felstedians. The IB brings a coherent approach to learning, developing the skills of initiative and resourcefulness as well as academic excellence. Whichever academic programme is selected, Sixth Formers can rely on a personalised approach to their learning and the latest technology to assist them.

A dedicated environment “ The Sixth Form Houses and Centre give me the space I need to concentrate on my work and be with other people my age” – Tom, Year 13

With individual, internet-equipped study-bedrooms and a more mature community

atmosphere, the Upper Sixth Boarding Houses – one for girls and one for boys – create just the right environment to suit the needs of Year 13 students as they focus on their studies and school commitments.

Meanwhile the Sixth Form Centre is the focal point of Sixth Form life, providing a mezzanine computer suite and desk areas for quiet study, as well as a lounge and bar area for all-important relaxation. There is a full calendar of socials, quizzes, debates and other events for Sixth Formers, organised by a student-led committee.

Challenge, Leadership and Service“It’s a responsibility to lead the School but it’s a great way to learn how to motivate people and how to get the best out of them ” – Max, Year 13

Every Felstedian is encouraged to become a leader in their chosen areas of specialism. Sixth formers take the lead in many school activities, such as the CCF, Drama, Music and Sport, and in organising a range of events, such as Felsted Model United Nations and charity fund-raisers. They also take the lead on overseas trips, including Round Square international exchanges and service projects, and other educational visits to destinations around the world. Lower Sixth students become leaders of the main Houses for Year 9 to Year 12 students, a year earlier than in many schools. Upper Sixth students lead and serve the School as prefects, motivating, mentoring and counselling students, and encouraging them to give their all.

Unique combinations“ I am able to pursue my passions for debating and hockey, which give me a good contrast to my academic work – I can do it all! ” – Lydia, Year 13

A healthy mix of academic study and the opportunity to pursue personal interests and passions brings a balance of life to the Sixth Form and helps to create well-rounded and interesting individuals. Every hour of the school day is packed full of lessons, independent study and co-curricular activities. All students take part in The Felsted Diploma, an individually tailored programme designed to suit their personal co-curricular interests, skills and developmental needs. They are encouraged to reflect on how their learning in one area of school life may help them in another, unifying their co-curricular programme into a single coherent learning experience.

An Education for Life“ I’m looking forward to university and to getting my toe on the ladder of my chosen career. It’s an exciting time! ” – Emma, Year 13

In the Lower Sixth, students follow a Work Education and Employability programme, which gives them an insight into a wide range of professional pathways, providing inspiration for their studies. A well resourced Careers Centre guides students in the university application process, including preparation for Oxbridge, Russell Group universities and specific professions such as medicine and dentistry. Membership of academic societies, visits to universities, interview practice and personal tuition all give Felstedians the best possible chance of achieving the university places they desire, setting them on the right course to fulfil their chosen career pathway. A very high percentage of students succeed in achieving their goals every year. On leaving the School, Felstedians join our thriving Felsted Network, and are always happy to mentor and assist our current students with their future career plans.

Qualities of the FelstedianFelstedians learn to reflect openly and honestly about their achievements and future goals: we are proud of the way we educate each and every student to be a responsible global citizen, and to be ready, resourceful and resilient in accepting life’s challenges. As a result, Felstedians enjoy highly successful careers in all walks of life and many are numbered among society’s true leaders. Felsted is truly an education for life.
