Together in Mission 2016
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Together in Mission program supports 81 parishes and 63 schoolsthat are in desperate need of funds. Every penny of every dollar goes straight to the people thatneed it through resources and ministries. Each parish in the archdiocese is asked to contribute. Those with more, are asked to give more. There are parishes and schools in impoverished areas thatrely on us for help.
Generosity of heartabounds at Padre Serra. Lastyear 556 families gave$99,400 to Together inMission. This year, thearchdiocese is asking us toincrease our gift to$105,400. Our prayer is thatevery family at Padre Serrawill give any amount to helpour brothers and sisters inneed. With gratitude for ourmany blessings let us trulybe, Together in Mission.

Spiritual Gifts? Really?
For the most part we Catholics don’t speak about spiritual gifts … Reword it slightly as “gifts ofthe Holy Spirit,” and it sounds more familiar. Fair enough. But then our inclination is to leave it at theclassical seven. It’s a great list, springing from the prophet Isaiah’s vision of a coming anointed of theLord who would have “a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spiritof knowledge and of fear of the Lord” (Isa 11:2). If you’ve received your confirmation after a dulyrigorous preparation program, you may well have memorized them.
The actual prayer the bishop prayed over us at our confirmation contains them:
Allpowerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon themto be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit ofright judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spiritof wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Our spiritual gifts discovery program lists several more gifts, based on a wider search of theScriptures: prophecy or proclamation (Rom 12:6); ministry or servanthood and teaching (Rom 12:7);encouragement or exhortation, generosity, nurturing or guidance, and mercy (Rom 12:8); faith and healing(1 Cor 12:9); miracles, discernment and tongues, along with their interpretation (1 Cor 12:10); apostleship, assistance or helping, visionary leadership or administration (1 Cor 12:28); evangelism and shepherding orpastoring (Eph 4:11). I’m not sure that this list, combined with Isa 11, is comprehensive, but it makes for agreat start.
Our world tends to value other kinds of gifts: good business sense, computing skills, beauty, sportsability and musical and acting talent. We can readily identify the value society has for these gifts by thesalaries we pay people who have them. By no means would I ever knock these civic gifts which, by theway, are also Godgiven.
We need to begin our personal reflection with the fact that we are gifted. Our scriptures clarify thatrepeatedly. We may not have the gifts we want. That can’t be helped. The second reflection, also pointedout to us by Scripture, is that we are to put our gifts to good use for the greater good: “As each one hasreceived a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Pet 4:10). Our worldis too needy for us to sit by and wait for someone else to step forward to address the greater good. As hasbeen said before, all that is necessary for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing.
I can’t encourage you enough to be doers of good, bothrecognizing the places where you are most gifted, and putting thegrace of those gifts at work for the Lord.
Siempre adelante!

Kik Messenger and the Dangers of Anonymous MessagesSocial media sites are available to anyone with an internetconnection (computer, phone, tablet). Your kids may be sharing theirlives with complete strangers, and parents should be aware of thesites they use, what they share, and who their friends are. Onemobile app, Kik, is regarded as the most dangerous site for internetpredators, because users can send messages to anyone with acellphone, including young children. Kik has no options for parentalcontrols, leaving kids exposed to the entire web. To learn more aboutthis app in the Virtus® article “Mobile App Danger—KikMessenger,” email jvienna@laarchdiocese.org.
