PUBLISHING INFORMATION

Do What You Love? Or, Love What You Do?Happy February 2016! February…the

month that we most associate with LOVE. However, also during the month of February there are several birthdays celebrated, as well. Besides George Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays, there are other birth-days such as Langston Hughes who was a great African American writer and poet, and Susan B. Anthony, who are just two amongst numerous notable historical fig-

ures in our country. And, of course, the infamous Groundhog, who by the time you read this will have already predicted the future of our winter season.

But, let’s go back to that word “Love.” We say it, we feel it, we hear it, and we read it.

Did you notice all the “we’s” in that sentence? I could have written “I” which can extrapolate to ‘it’s an all about “me thing,” which for me personally, is not what Love is.

From a professional, business perspective, we have heard for a long time, “Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.” (David Frost) Well, let’s look at this from another angle. Finding a job you “love” is not always easy and may not be practicable nor sustainable to a family’s livelihood. So, what are we to do if we don’t “love” our work? Are we to quit our jobs and chase the dream of the job we love? No, not necessarily. We just change our thinking a bit. Research shows that great work (award-winning work) is produced when people focus on doing something others love. The Great Work Study conduct-ed by the O.C. Tanner Institute showed that 88% of projects that earned awards began with an employee asking their own version of the question, “What difference could I make that other people would love?”

An excerpt taken directly from a 2015 FORBES states the action concisely for a way to learn to ‘love” your job: “The point is, loving your job is one thing—the activities and responsibilities you have on a day-to day basis. But loving the impact your job has on someone else is another. If you don’t

totally hate your job but find you’re not that happy with what you are doing, try this one little simple activity: Go and see your work being received. See how it impacts someone else, another coworker, a customer, another team, or whoever ben-efits from your work.”

So, now the word “Love” has become an action verb of GIVING. Now, we are talking and brings me right to this.

Crestview turns 100 this year. I personally do not know how many cities in the good old USA have the honor of turn-ing 100, but our City of Crestview is now in those ranks. What a thrill. Do you know that our City has so many events going on to celebrate our heritage that you can participate in? Well, there are. And, if by any chance, you are not in “love” with your job, well this is the time and the place to ask yourself that question, “What can I personally do to motivate my busi-ness and my coworkers and/or employees to LOVE celebrating our 100 year old City of Crestview?” This is a great opportu-nity for us to focus on the recipient of our work--- our own community—The 100 year old City of Crestview!

Please visit this website for all the upcoming events your love of community can be shared: http://www.mainstreetcrest-view.org/msca/events. I think you will find that you will make a difference, your business will make a difference and our com-munity will be the direct benefactor of your action and that you will “Love what you Do.”

February really is ALL ABOUT THE HEART! Have you noticed that before the calendar even turned 2016 the stores were already putting out Valentine’s candy? I know that practically everyone associates February with Valentine’s Day. The flowers, the candy, the cards, jewelry….it is good to be a girl in February! Sometimes it feels like we are swimming in a sea of RED hearts, ribbons and rose petals.

On Friday February 5th I want you to give thought to another RED HEART EVENT. GO RED FOR WOMEN! This is the American Heart Association’s GO RED FOR WOMEN day!

Do you know about heart disease in women? Do you know the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke? Did you know that the symptoms in men and women are different? The best part about all these questions is that if you don’t know the answers to them, you have a great resource here locally that can help. On this day, I encourage you to visit NOMC Healthy Woman website and sign up as a member. This organization has a lot of wonderful information on planned events in our community and information from doctors that can help you stay on track this year with living healthy. I hope to see you around town on Friday, February 5th dressed in RED, supporting GO RED FOR WOMEN day.

If I don’t see you around town on the 5th, I hope to see you at the Crestview Centennial Ball at Fred Astaire Dance Studio on Main Street on February 13th. This is such an exciting year, Crestview turns 100! The Centennial Committee has been working hard to put together different events throughout the year. I am excited to say that “Dancing through the Decades” is going to be a great event. Various businesses around town have tickets for sale. I know that Legacy Insurance has tickets! If you have any questions about any of the events that are coming up you can check them out on their facebook page @ City of Crestview Centennial or on their website at Crestview100.com You can also call Main Street Association and speak to Patti. I look forward to a great year celebrating this wonderful town that we live in.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:Holiday Inn Express and Suites Crestview

All About the Heart!

The Holiday Inn Express and Suites Crestview is proud to be featured as this month’s Spotlight Business. While putting together this business write-up, it came to mind that many of you, if not all of you, are Crestview residents and may have never had a reason to visit our beautiful hotel. We typically lead the local competition in revenue and occupancy because of our great staff and our impressive 77 room building. We offer many amenities not found at other area hotels such as our indoor swimming pool and hot tub. We’d love to be your choice in lodging for out of town visiting family members and social or business events which may require group blocks of rooms.

Our COMPLIMENTARY Amenities Include:• INDOOR heated pool and hot-tub open year-round• Fitness Center• Business Center with printing• Copy/fax service• High-speed Wi-Fi• Deluxe hot breakfast• Microwave and refrigerator in every guest roomIf your business finds itself in need of long term placement for a contracted

worker or business professional we have two amazing Executive Suites available. These rooms are almost three times as large as our standard rooms and feature a king bedroom with its own bathroom and hallway entrance, a door which can be shut separating the suite from a connected living room with a second bathroom and an apartment-style kitchen with full sized appliances (stove, refrigerator), dining table, cookware, and cutlery. The living room portion of the suite also has a second

hallway exit making egress possible without traveling through the bedroom. Although it can be booked for one night at a time, our Executive Suite is a favorite for guests needing weekly or monthly accommodations.

To help businesses host the best meetings in Crestview, our hotel offers full day and partial day rentals of our Florida Room which has 630 square feet of meeting space with audio/visual equipment, easily accommodating up to 35 guests in a classroom setting. Social events are also equally welcome as our meeting room has also been used to host baby showers, family reunions and birthday parties.

I invite any Chamber member to stop by for a tour of our facility in the future. The Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Crestview is always ready to provide top-notch customer service and hospitality for any of your business or leisure needs!

Our daily drive down Ferdon reminds us that The Law does in fact have an impact on our daily lives. One sign tells us that an attorney is available 24/7. Another implies that your insurance carrier may not be acting in your best interest. Reading carefully between the lines we realize that The Law has moved into the realm of specialization. This is demonstrated by the fact that major law firms deal with up to 40+ different areas of specialization. One of the sponsors of our morning breakfast introduced their firm by identifying its areas of specialization.

Two quick numbers. The Florida Medical Association web site shows 20,000+ members. The Florida Bar Association’s shows 99,000+ members. How do you sort through 99,000+ to find an attorney who is knowledgeable in the specific area of the law that is impacting your life. You can quickly reduce this number by using Martin-Dale Hubble. This firm has been rating attorneys for over 100 years. Start your search by seeking an attorney who has their highest rating - AV – denoting the highest level of

professional excellence. On the Supreme Court Building in Washington,

D.C., is the quote “Equal Justice Under Law!” To many in America today’s reality is closer to one attorney’s comment, “It is better to be rich and guilty than poor and innocent.” Or, said another way, “for many the color of justice is green!” Too strong! Look at the Innocence Project web site – www.innocenceproject.org.

The Florida Bar Association (FBA) recognizes this challenge through what is defined in their Rules and Regulations (Chapter 9) as Legal Service Plans. FBA acknowledges that every Florida citizen should have access to the legal system. How many laws exist within our ‘legal system’? One law school professor took 2 years to study the question. His final analysis was that literally no one knows.

National studies acknowledge that ‘we the people’ simply do not seek legal assistance because of a failure to recognize the existence of a legal problem, inability to locate an attorney, fears of excessive cost of legal

representation, or the existence of legal service plans. The good news here in Florida is that FBA supports the concept and actively encourages the establishment, operation, growth, and development of legal services plans as 1 means of increasing a person’s ability to obtain legal services at an affordable cost in order for the citizens of Florida to have the opportunity to better gain access to the legal system.

Within the state of Florida legal service plans maybe developed by an organization of 2 or more persons whose individual members are identifiable in terms of some common interest or affinity. Sounds like the Crestview Chamber to me.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

North Okaloosa Medical Center (NOMC) considers it our privilege and honor to serve Okaloosa and Walton Counties as well as the surrounding areas by providing quality medical care to thousands within the community each year. As one of the largest employers in the area, we are proud to contribute to the local economy through taxes, utilizing local businesses and services, as well as donating thousands of dollars to local charitable organizations and our schools.

Serving the healthcare needs of our customers means providing the highest quality clinical care and creating an outstanding customer service experience for every patient every time. At NOMC that “always experience” means providing fundamental components to your care such as; prompt courteous attention, advanced technology, high-quality compassionate providers and efficient friendly facilities.

NOMC is committed to excellence in health care, demonstrated through implementation of advancements in medical technology such as single site robotic surgery. Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses a computer-assisted technology to aid in surgical procedures. Rather than operating on patients through large incisions, surgeons use miniaturized surgical instruments that fit through

a series of small incisions to reduce scarring and recovery time. Also, as an accredited Chest Pain Center North Okaloosa Medical Center has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of Society for Cardiovascular Patient Care accreditation review specialists. Key areas in which an Accredited Chest Pain Center must demonstrate expertise include the following:

• Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system

• Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly

• Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms

• Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures

• Ensuring the competence and training of Accredited Chest Pain Center personnel

• Maintaining organizational structure and commitment

• Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care

• Supporting community outreach programs that

educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

Another essential component to the service we provide is our dedicated medical staff. Our hospital has an outstanding collection of professionals as members of the medical staff and this group continues to grow as our community population and respective needs expand. Since the summer of 2015 we have recruited 5 new physicians covering medical specialties that include Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Orthopedics.

As your community hospital, we want to exceed your expectations for excellent care in all the services that provide. We’re committed to delivering personalized healthcare to patients and helping our community grow and prosper.

For more information about our expanding hospital services and what’s happening at NOMC, visit www.northokaloosa.com or call us at (850) 689-8446.
