A Note from Fr. Sean, Magical Thinking Part 1: Blaming the Devil
Magical thinking is the idea or belief that you can influence the outcome of specific events
by doing something that has no bearing on the circumstances. This is related to superstition.
Magical thinking is a concept in psychology that may point to some mental disorder or
disturbance. Magical thinking is highly prevalent in the wide world of sports fans. Some fans
have their “lucky socks” that they have to wear inside out in order for their team to win. If someone really thinks that the socks they wear have any influence on the performance of professional athletes, then
that person has fallen prey to magical thinking.
Sadly, magical thinking is also prevalent in religion. Most of my experience of people with magical thinking has to
do with the Devil. Some people are very quick to jump to the conclusion that if they have a problem in their life that it
must the Devil. The magical thinking part comes in when people in turn try to influence the Devil by fighting him, which is very dangerous.
It is important to look at facts in order to determine cause and effect. It is harder to face up to unpleasant facts about
your life than it is to jump to the conclusion that malevolent forces are working against you. The way that the Church
approaches pastoral care for those who complain of demonic activity is to eliminate all-natural causes.
The first question I ask is why someone thinks the Devil is working in their life in an extraordinary way. In almost all cases, there are presenting issues that lead me to believe that the person may need professional mental health care
to deal with the presenting issue rather than to treat the problem as an issue of spiritual origin. If I think it really is
demonic in nature, I refer them to the Bishop’s office.
If all this sounds rather clinical, it is because it is. Some people have this image of priests coming in like a lone
gunslinger to face off against the Devil in front of the saloon. Sadly, some priests themselves have perpetuated this image. The reality is that the Church takes claims of demonic activity seriously, because the Devil is real and there are
demons in his charge who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
However, because we take such claims seriously, we do not immediately jump to the conclusion that just because
someone is hearing noises in their house that the Devil is the cause. Again, we rule out all-natural causes first, and
then proceed with caution, and even then only a trained priest exorcist (which I am not) with the permission of the
bishop actually deals with cases of possession.
I know that I have disappointed and even angered people who have approached me asking for some form of
exorcism, or otherwise exercise some control over a situation in their life. Such people are in pain and are looking for
relief, and they believe that their priest can offer such relief. However, I would be engaging in malpractice of the
highest order if I led you to believe that I could solve your problems with holy water and a blessing. I would be
perpetuating your magical thinking, and I would be leaving you in greater pain. If I ever recommend that you see a
therapist, it is not because I think you’re crazy (I’ve benefited from years of therapy); it’s because I think you need help that I can’t provide.
I’ll take up this topic again in future articles. Next week you’ll be reading about our new director of evangelization!
Yours in Christ,
