Rector’s Letter

Why teaching the Bible is at the centre of our mission

Dear Friends,

‘ He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live by bread alone but on every

word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.’

Deuteronomy 8.3 In this year of mission at Knockbreda (and indeed for the future beyond 2015), it is vital that our agenda is established by the gospel, rather than by the world. The world would love the Church to be distracted by all sorts of other concerns – social concerns and even religious concerns. The last thing the world wants us to talk about is Christ and the last thing it wants to hear is gospel preaching. The preaching and teaching of the Word of God is always unpopular with those who are rebelling against God, which is why people often ridicule sermonizing as ‘Bible-bashing’. After all, nobody likes to be ‘preached at.’

However at the centre of the Church’s mission is a verbal message that Christ died for sins. It is this message which is of ‘first importance’ (1 Corinthians 15.3) to the church and to the world. And the message is to be communicated to a needy world through the ministry of the Word. Paul instructs Timothy to devote himself to “the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching” (1Tim 4:11). Each believer at Knockbreda has a crucial role to play in this ministry. It is to faithfully share the Word of God as we talk to our friends and family about the Christian faith. We may not call it formal ‘preaching.’ But the main thing is that we are passing on the Word which God has given us. We will be tempted to do other worthy things – some of which are necessary for our church to continue day by day. But our number one priority must be to place the gospel and the Bible at the top of our agenda. The Word needs to be brought into everything we do. The Lord Jesus Christ and his apostles set us an invaluable example in this regard. As we read the New Testament we find them consistently preaching and teaching God’s Word and making hard decisions about their priorities in favour of that ministry (e.g. Mark 1.38). Jesus himself quotes the verse at the top of this page right at the beginning of his ministry (Matthew 4.4). And it is true! Humanity cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. The Bible (the Word of the Lord) offers us spiritual life, new life, true life. In the Old Testament it is one of Israel’s greatest fears that there should be a famine of God’s words (Amos 8.11). I am working hard to ensure that there is spiritual bread on the table at Knockbreda, in the form of teaching from the Bible every week. My prayer is that each of us would find a way of being involved in this ministry of the Word within our church.

Sincerely in Christ,

Bill

CAP Christmas Hamper and Fuel Fund Appeal

A big thank you to all from Knockbreda who so generously supported this very worthwhile appeal. Donations to the Fuel Fund totalled £141 and we brought 3 car loads of items to St Finians where they were sorted and made up into hampers. Thanks also to Mothers’ Union members who chose this appeal for their Christmas project and donated Christmas gifts and treats. Heather Elliott ______________

Our Christmas Hamper Appeal was very successful again this year, with great support from the parishes of St. Columbas, St. Donards, St. Finians and Knockbreda and also from McQuiston Memorial. We were able to make up 50 hampers together with an additional box of items which were delivered to CAP clients in the

week commencing 15 December 2014. There was also food left over which will enable us to support clients who are living on tight budgets throughout the year. The clients were delighted with the hampers and very grateful for the extra support in the run up to Christmas. One client said, “Wow! These hampers are amazing! I can’t believe how much this will help.” I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the Hamper Appeal and Fuel Fund and also for your prayerful support as we work to bring God’s hope and blessing into the lives of our clients. ‘Know and Tell the Gospel’ by John Chapman.

Have you ever felt your knees knock and your mouth dry up just when you had the opportunity to tell someone about your faith in Jesus Christ? John Chapman says he has. He struggled for many years with a secret fear of witnessing to his Lord and Saviour, even wondering if he should just give up because he obviously “didn’t have the gift.” But having determined to resolve his difficulty he found that evangelism became very rewarding and that it is the privilege and responsibility of every Christian. Know and Tell the Gospel is a marvellous book (a modern Christian classic) written in two parts. First it explains what the gospel is. So, if you have not yet made a commitment to Christ, it will explain exactly what you have to do and believe. Secondly, it helpfully looks at how to pass on the faith. In this year of mission 2015 every Christian believer at Knockbreda needs equipped to do exactly that – pass on the gospel. John Chapman was for many years the Director for Evangelism for the Sydney diocese of the Anglican Church. He writes with passion and humour illuminating his bible teaching with illustrations and personal anecdotes. Highly recommended. On the bookstall priced £5.

THURSDAY CLUB

Christmas Party Report

On 11th December we had our Christmas Party. It was wonderful to see so many friendly faces (74 in all) in the Hall which was so nicely decorated, singing Carols and enjoying the Christmas Festivities. I would like to thank all those who helped in any way to make the party a success—helped with food, served tea but most of all those who took part in the entertainment—Catherine, Vera and Elizabeth. An enormous thank you to Mrs Sheila Barrett who gave up her time and enthusiasm with the ‘Knockbreda Players’ - Robert, Jim and Brian, (10 out of 10 as usual!), not forgetting Lila Gibson for her accompaniment on the piano - all of whom made for an enjoyable afternoon. Thank you everyone. It just leaves it for me, on behalf of the Committee, to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2015 - See you soon d.v. Mina One person not mentioned in the above Report is, of course, Mina and it is only right that her massive contribution to the success of the Christmas Party and the Thursday Club is recognised - Very many thanks for all your work Mina! Editor

With Valentine’s Day and romance in mind… Marriage is…. - not always just a word; sometimes it is a sentence. - a very good way to promote civilisation – according to Soc-rates, if you get a good partner you will be happy, if you get a bad one you will become a philosopher. - the only permanent cure for love.

We had an enjoyable evening in December. Poems, quizzes and a craft activity as well as a contribution from the Rev. Paul made up the programme for the meeting. Thank you to members for all the items they brought for the CAP Christmas Hamper Appeal and to the Committee who provided the supper. As the speakers for January and March had to be switched around and due to the fact that the January meeting was taking place on the 3rd Thursday and not the 1st I can only say that we hope to have heard Professor Jim Dornan speak on ‘A privileged professional life’ at that meeting, (I am writing these notes on 2nd January) Carol Walker will now speak at the March meeting on the subject of ‘Women and War’. In February, the Rev. Derek Kerr’s title is ‘By Royal Appointment’.
