The Metropolitan Opera Saturday, February 14 at 1pm

The Met presents a double bill of Tchaikovsky’s enchanting fairy tale Iolanta and Bartók’s psychological thriller Bluebeard’s Castle. In Iolanta, soprano Anna Netrebko stars as the blind girl who experiences love for the first time, and Piotr Beczala is Count Tristan Vaudémont. In Bluebeard’s Castle, Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

Race and Class in IndianaSunday, February 22 at 12pm

This special edition of Profiles explores the intersections of race and class as they pertain to life in south-central Indiana. Segments include a conversation with producer Leah Johnson’s grandmother on what it was like growing up below the Mason-Dixon line before African Americans were given the right to vote; a discussion with community elder Betty Bridgwaters on the undercurrents of racial tension in Bloomington’s Black Market fire; and a look at how IU professor Jacinda Townsend worked to create “whole” black characters in her novel, which depicts life in civil rights-era northeastern Kentucky.

Night Lights Friday, February 27 at 10pm

Guitarist George Benson was a crossover pop star of the 1970s, who had previously built up a considerable body of straight-ahead jazz—both as a leader and with organists such as Brother Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith. Host David Brent Johnson takes a look at Benson’s 1960s and early-70s albums that feature him in jazz settings.

Cuba: The Forgotten RevolutionMonday, February 16 at 9pm; Sunday, February 22 at 2:30pm

Cuba: The Forgotten Revolution tells the virtually unknown story of Cuban revolutionaries Frank País and Juan Antonio Echeverría.

Working largely independently from each other, these young men—a school teacher and architecture student, respectively—played critical roles in the eventual overthrow of dictator Fulgencio Batista, although their names seldom appear alongside their more famous contemporaries, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Scholar Lillian Guerra explains: “It is as if we told the tale of the American Revolution as solely Washington’s story, leaving out Franklin, Jefferson, Adams and others.”

New scholarship and recently accessed footage challenge the prevailing view—in part manufactured and perpetuated by Che Guevara—that Castro’s army of 200 guerillas single-handedly defeated tens of thousands of Batista’s professional soldiers and liberated the people of Cuba. In fact, País and Echeverría’s

city-based insurgencies in Santiago and Havana held the key to generating popular support for under-mining the authority of Batista and his secret police.

Both País and Echeverría rivaled Castro in popularity and power during the height of the Revolution yet neither man lived to see Batista defeated. País was gunned down in the street; Echeverría died in a daring raid on the palace. We will never know what Cuba would have been like had they survived.

This documentary highlights the complexities inherent in revolutions and examines the shaping and re-shaping of the final historical record. The film is narrated by Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno.
