Time Machine (February 3) shows how technology has preserved — and altered — the way we think about the great songs. In Lost and Found (February 10), hear an undocumented, unknown song by Jerry Herman. Saloon Singers (February 17) savors the allure of musical nightlife, from Mississippi juke joints to Las Vegas clubs.

Austinc City Limits: WilcoSaturday, February 4 at 9pm

Austin City Limits continues its longstanding tradition of showcasing the best of American music. Musical styles range from contemporary and traditional pop to rock, country, blues, bluegrass, Latin, folk, roots and more. Modern rock band Wilco returns to Austin City Limits with tunes from its LP The Whole Love.

U.S. Health Care: The Good News Thursday, February 16 at 9pm

One small community in Colorado delivers the highest value-for-the-money health care in the United States, and they cover nearly everyone in town in the process. How do they do it? Could other communities do it, too? Correspondent T.R. Reid interviews health policy experts at the Dartmouth Institute before heading to Colorado and other places in the U.S. where doctors and hospitals are working hard to provide excellent health care at reasonable cost, and sometimes to nearly everyone in town.

From draft dodging to the Dayton Accords, from Monica Lewinsky to a balanced budget, the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton veered between sordid scandal and grand achievement. This two-part program explores the fascinating story of an American president who rose from a broken childhood in Arkansas to become one of the most successful politicians in modern American history and one of the most complex and conflicted characters to ever stride across the public stage.

Great Performances: MemphisFriday, February 24 at 9pm

Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best New Musical, this show turns the radio dial back to the 1950s to tell the story of a white DJ whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. His romantic interest is a young black singer whose career is on the rise but who can’t make the break out of segregated clubs on her own. When the two collaborate, her soulful music reaches radio audiences everywhere, and the golden era of early rock ‘n’ roll takes flight.

Why I Sing Amazing Grace: The African-American Worship Experience Sunday, February 26 at 5:30 and 11pm

For more than two centuries, African-American churches have served as a means of inspiration and hope, and emphasized the meaning of individual transformation. This program features a 30-minute documentary and a panel discussion exploring the topic of spirituality, rituals, power and leadership in the black church by examining the history of the worship experience.

The Amish: American Experience Tuesday, February 28 at 8pm

This program answers many questions Americans have about this insistently insular religious community, whose intense faith and adherence to 500-year-old traditions have by turns captivated and repelled, awed and irritated, inspired and confused for more than a century. With unprecedented access, built on patience and hard-won trust, the film is the first to penetrate deeply and explore this attention-averse group. In doing so, The Amish paints an intimate portrait of contemporary Amish faith and life.

Jazz Inspired host Judy Carmichael speaks with Axel Zwingenberger, German pianist of old-style blues whom British critics called “Boogie-meister of the world,” and with his performing partner, Minneapolis opera singer Lila Ammons, granddaughter of the American pianist Albert Ammons. February 10th at 8pm.

Harmonia on February 12th at 9pm includes a look at the glamorous, emotive Catalan soprano Montserrat Figueras. Through her worldwide concerts and on dozens of definitive recordings, she helped revitalize the performance of early music and bring back to life a largely forgotten repertoire.

New Hampshire singer-songwriter Kyle Anne Carey visits with Bryan Kelso Crow at 9pm on the February 18th Celtic Connections to discuss her latest CD, Monongah. Recorded in Ireland, the CD blends Appalachian, light gospel, and Celtic folk sounds. Kyle Carey spent her childhood in the Alaskan Bush, immersed in the Yupik language and its songs, where she developed sensitivity to language that helped her in her study of Gaelic language and song.

Not In Our Town: Class ActionsMonday, February 13 at 10:30pm

This program tells the stories of three communities who are working together to stop hate and intolerance, and activating their communities to create safer, more accepting environments for everyone. One of the featured communities is Bloomington.

As students at Indiana University prepared to celebrate the holiday season, the IU campus was rocked by a series of attacks against Jewish institutions. Mayor Mark Kruzan was shaken, but committed to take action, saying “In Bloomington, there’s a feeling that it’s an idyllic place, but this was a call to reality that hate can hit home. We need to never take it for granted that this is a safe and civil community.” On the first night of Hannukah, the mayor joined the Jewish community and more than 300 Bloomington residents as they lit the menorah in the center of town. Rabbi Sue Silberberg was also supported by Bloomington United, a diverse group of civic and faith leaders. Silberberg said, “One of the really powerful things that happened is that the Muslim community said, ‘we want to support you, you have always been there for us, and we want to stand in solidarity and condemn these horrible acts’.”

Bloomington United was created in 1998 after an IU student and white supremacist blanketed the campus with anti-Semitic and racist literature, then murdered a Korean student before heading on a rampage across the country. Since then, Bloomington United meets regularly to unite people in creating a more inclusive community.
